The Canes gave up a 3-2 lead to the Blue Jackets with under 4 minutes to play tonight, and went on to lose in regulation 4-3. What's sad is the fact that I knew with absolute certainty that we'd lose as soon as the game was tied up. I hate to have so little confidence in this team, but they've been so awful for the last four going on five seasons that it's completely futile to have any optimism about them.

Did we all see the softest goal of all time last night? No, really. I've never seen a worse goal. How about this one?

Oh, cool, this has all been made into one thread now. Thanks, whichever moderator did that!
The Canes looked to be getting their shit together after going on a five game win streak that began with Jeff Skinner carrying the team to a come-from-behind victory against the Habs on New Year's Eve, and included some spectacular play between the pipes from Anton Khudobin. Things were looking pretty great at the end of this streak, with a 6-1 victory over the Maple Leafs in which rookie Elias Lindholm had his first 3 point game in the NHL.
But then, because they're the Carolina Hurricanes, everything fell the fuck apart, as they've been shut out in their last two, to the Blue Jackets and Flames. The fucking Calgary Flames shut us out 2-0. The Canes went 0-1-1 against one of the worst teams in the league. This is made even worse by the fact that Sean Monahan, the player taken immediately after Lindholm in the draft, scored his 13th goal of the season against the Canes in that game, and he has more goals than Lindholm has points. I know it's very early to be declaring Lindholm a bad pick (and in fact I expect he'll be a good player at the very least in coming years), but as of now, it's looking like this team is continuing their proud tradition of being mediocre at drafting.
We're now 7th in the Metro Division, and even though we're a mere 3 points out of 3rd, I think our chances of making the playoffs are slim, and will probably remain slim as long as Jim "I'm-Coasting-Off-Of-Having-Won-A-Cup-8-Years-Ago-And-Being-In-North-Carolina" Rutherford is our GM, which will probably be until he retires, since he's part owner of the team.

Also, in two massively absurd Olympic snubs, Eric Staal didn't make Team Canada, and Alex Semin didn't make Team Russia. Both are pretty pathetic snubs, but especially Semin, when there's multiple lifelong KHL-ers on Team Russia's squad, motherfucking Radulov, and 18 year old Valeri Nichushkin. Semin is easily one of Russia's top five forwards (somewhere a bit after Ovechkin, Semin, and Kovulchuk), and it's fucking ridiculous that the guy didn't make the team. With Staal at least you could make a case that there's such great depth that it's reasonable to overlook him, but I still think there's a couple of forwards out there (cough cough Jamie Benn) who are demonstrably inferior players. I have a feeling anti-small-market bias played a significant role in this. If Semin had taken more money to play in the KHL against inferior competition, or Staal were in Boston or Toronto, I can guarantee you their names would be on their respective countries' rosters.

I'm very excited that Justin Faulk made the Team USA roster, but given the up-and-down season he's had, I'm a little surprised, and I don't know enough about the other USA defenseman to know if he was honestly a wise decision (I question if Faulk is really better than even an aging Yandle). But I'll take it. And speaking of snubs, Bobby Ryan was 4th among American skaters in points this season when the roster was announced, and didn't make the team. And snubs on Team USA could really do us in; I just hope our superior goaltending and choice to build a roster solely out of NHL players can propel us over Teams Canada and Russia. Probably not, but hopefully.

Give me Ryan Miller as the US starter or give me death! I'm sorry the crappy Sabres are pulling down some people's opinion of his play. He's pretty much the only reason we aren't in 42nd place right now.
I'm also Team USA first, Team Sweden next.

Quick is coming off an injury and Miller has the fifth best save percentage out of goalies who have played in over 20 games while facing an absurd number of shots. And really, I can't stress just how bad the Sabres are. They're not just the worst team in the league, they're aiming for the worst offensive season in NHL history. We're number 1! We're number 1! (That said, Quick is fine. I mostly just have a beef with Miller apparently starting out as barely on the Olympic depth chart at all which is lame since he's played really well, is an obsessive preparer, and was awesome in the last Olympics.) But look, the most exciting things for Sabres fans the last few months include Zenon Kenopka's Twitter photos of his rabbit, finally getting a new GM after 30 years, and the stuffed otters in Sabres jerseys that the Sabres and Steve Ott put together. The Olympics, they are what I have. Heh.

Also, what really sucks for the Sabres is that we all know that they probably won't even get the first overall pick in the draft. It'll probably just be Edmonton winning the lottery again.

flyinggrayson and SensitiveSethPutnam Quick is the hothand(between him and Miller). In 6 games in January since he came back he has allowed only 8 goals, and has a .947 save percentage that includes 1 shutout. Miller has only played 4 games and given up the same amount of goals. Quick is healthy and playing at his normal level, so you go with the better goalie. You know the one that is the best big game goalie in the world right now. Plus, if they really were going with the hot hand it wouldn't be Quick or Miller it would be Bishop, but you don't, you go with your most talented Goalie and that is Quick.

It isn't like Edmonton is doing anything of note with those picks anyway. That was exactly what I was coming here to say. They seem to exist solely to poke holes in my theory that it can't possibly be that bad to go through a Penguins-style "tank a few years, draft a few franchise players, become awesome again" cycle of sucking. Apparently yes, it can be that bad, if you do it completely wrong.

The Coyotes finally won a game last night. This has been excruciating to see. Hope they can turn it around. Their division is way too tough to go through another losing streak like that. I have tickets to tomorrow's game vs. New Jersey, but I'm not sure I'll be well enough to go. Cross your fingers.
Can't wait to see Oliver Ekman-Larsson play for Sweden at the Olympics.
Also really happy to see Mike Smith named to the Canadian team. What a huge honor! Even if he sits on the bench the whole time. He's a great guy who has worked really hard to turn his game around.

Feel better, Desert Dweller! Hope you can attend the game (and that the 'Yotes can beat up on the Devils for both our teams' sakes). I've never had much chance to see OEL in action, given that he plays for one of the non-traditional market Western Conference teams, but his spot on Team Sweden seems well earned. And I've always kind of liked Mike Smith ever since he was my starting goalie in a season of NHL '08 where I drafted an entirely new roster for the Hurricanes. It's crazy to think that a guy who looked like a lifelong backup in Tampa turned into one of the league's top netminders and it was awesome to see him get selected to Team Canada.

Holy shit, do you have any links to those rabbit or otters-in-Sabres-jerseys photos? Because both of those things sound awesome. Here's the first mention of Hoppy, not long after the Sabres claimed Zenon. He then explained that Hoppy doesn't enjoy flying and would be driving from Minnesota to Buffalo with a friend. Hoppy, by the way, has dual citizenship. And finally, Hoppy arrived in Buffalo and was back in loving Zenon's arms. I have no idea if Zenon Konopka is any good at hockey but his Twitter feed is pretty cute. Here's the Ott's otter. It was a fundraiser for the Buffalo Zoo. I'm not a huge Steve Ott fan, but I think it's pretty adorable. I probably would have bought one eventually but they're evidently sold out of the first batch. And yes, the Sabres will most likely find a way to blow the first pick. We're already hearing over and over that next year's draft is way better so that's nice. The local media has enjoyed switching from "THE SABRES JUST NEED TO TANK AND GET A TOP FIVE PICK" to "TOP FIVE PICKS DON'T MEAN ANYTHING JUST LOOK AT EDMONTON." That said, I am looking forward to the trade deadline, draft, and off-season. If nothing else, all the changes in the front office make things a little unpredictable for once. I didn't hate Darcy Regier as much as most Sabres fans, but after 16 years, there wasn't much mystery.

It's crazy to think that a guy who looked like a lifelong backup in Tampa turned into one of the league's top netminders and it was awesome to see him get selected to Team Canada. Well, I made it to the game. My apartment stairs were daunting. That was the worst part. Other than that I did okay. Couldn't really cheer or howl for the team. And the climb from upper section row 4 back up to the upper concourse was also not fun. Otherwise I had a great time! Coyotes played much better than they were earlier in the month. The friend I went with is a huge Devils fan, so he wasn't happy. Devils looked really sloppy, especially at the start. Their defense was breaking down in front of Brodeur a lot tonight. It was a fairly fast game, though. Nice flow. Kind of surprising considering how these two teams generally play defense. That's 2 more points for Keith Yandle tonight. I swear, if Team USA has trouble scoring in the Olympics I am really going to start bitching about them leaving Yandle off the team. Coyotes win 3-2. OEL is amazing! I love him! He's my favorite player on the Coyotes. It has been so exciting to watch him grow here and get better and better over the last few seasons. He has an incredible career ahead of him. Hope he has a stellar Olympic tournament. Smith has played a lot better over the last 3-4 games. He really got into a funk there earlier in the month. He's a good big game goalie, though. So, hopefully as the games start getting more and more meaningful he'll turn up his game. Yeah, I thought the Coyotes were NUTS when they signed him. I think *everyone* thought career backup was the best he could do. Everyone except the Coyotes goalie coach, I guess. Amazing to see what that coach accomplished with Mike Smith. In other news, how about that line brawl between Calgary and Vancouver. Torts was going NUTS in that game. LOL! WTF, Calgary? And then after essentially instigating that brawl, they still couldn't beat Vancouver. Thanks for nothing!

I saw that you guys were up at one point Saturday night, and hoped you'd been able to go. And I wish the Canes had a defenseman like OEL (Justin Faulk is sorta similar, I suppose, but he's quite a ways to go before he's the same level of elite as OEL). The 'Yotes win helped keep the Canes from falling too far behind in the playoff race; they beat the Panthers Saturday night, but then a horrific start against Tampa on Sunday had them unable to overcome a 4-0 deficit and they lost 5-3, further cementing my conviction that this team is probably not going to the playoffs. I still haven't followed up too much on Torts' visit to the Flames' locker room, but apparently he's been suspended for fifteen days without pay. When was the last time you saw a coach suspended in the NHL?

Glad the home team won hopefully they keep it up (full disclosure saw the Blue Jackets.) Need to learn some lingo before I can engage in conversation. Glad to hear you enjoyed the game! I take it you saw Columbus' win over the Sabres on Saturday? I am only now just realizing that the Blue Jackets have won six straight, and are currently in a playoff spot. To give a pitch for what I'm assuming is the closest NHL team to you, Columbus is a long-suffering franchise who's only made the playoffs once (and in that single playoff appearance they went 0-4) in an albeit fairly brief history, but there's reason to be excited due to reigning Vezina-winner (the Vezina award is given out to the NHL goalie judged to be the best in the league at the end of each season) Sergei Bobrovsky, the recently-signed star forward Nathan Horton (who just returned from a shoulder injury this month), and a very promising young defenseman in Ryan Murray (I've also heard good things about their fairly-new general manager, Jarmo Kekalainen, whom I believe is the first European-born GM in the league). They just barely missed the playoffs last season, and as they appear to potentially be on the verge of finally reaching the postseason, now seems like a great time to become a fan of a team and experience any success from the beginning. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about not seeming ignorant about hockey on here. I've never seen anyone be an asshole to anyone else when discussing hockey either here or back in the Old Country, and I'm sure people would be forgiving of a new fan occasionally displaying his lack of hockey knowledge. Plus, I have probably commented on this thread more than anyone, and I wouldn't consider myself an expert at analyzing the game by any stretch. Hope to see you on this thread in the future!

I kind of pull for the Jackets when it doesn't directly affect the Rangers. They have four ex-Rangers that I never wanted to see traded (Dubinsky, Anisimov, Gaborik, and Tyutin), so I kind of consider them "Rangers-West"--or at least I did until they moved to the Eastern Conference this year. Now they're division rivals who I am having a hard time learning to hate.
Anyway, the Rangers have been on a bit of a tear themselves, going 7-2-1 in their last ten and as of now holding on to second place in the Metro (I don't think anyone's catching the Pens at this point). Rick Nash specifically looks to finally be back in pre-concussion form, and Lundqvist is back to his old self as well. The Metro is tight though, and there's a lot of hockey left to play.

Roy Batty's Pet Dove I went to the Friday night game against the Capitols. Definitely will try to go to a few more games this season. My bf is always happy when I show interest in sports, so I know he will be game for it. I also heard the story of how Les Wexner brought the team to town despite the city council's objections kinda of funny.

Kid Q Glad to hear you enjoyed your first live hockey game! Liz n Dick and I traveled out to Columbus a few years ago to see a game there and I was pleasantly surprised at what a fun scene it is there for the fans. The Devils broadcasters are always commenting on how loud the cannon is and my family always rolls our eyes and say, "Shut up about the stupid cannon, Chico!" But then I experienced it in person and jebus, that cannon is LOUD! Every time it went off (and it went off a lot -- we saw at least eight goals scored, if I recall correctly) Liz and I would exclaim with delight "That cannon is so loud!" I also dig that there's a really good brewery right near the arena. I'd get season tickets in a heartbeat if I lived in Columbus. flyinggrayson How have I not heard about Hoppy before?!? That's amazing! Hoppy's even better than Petr Sykora's famed chinchilla, Petr Junior! (Mostly on the strength of not being owned by Petr Sykora.)

I'm jealous of you guys who can just go to a hockey game whenever you feel like it. You can't just go to a Leafs game like that...unless you're rich, you have to know someone with season tickets and hope they won't make you pay for them, or you have to buy shitty seats months in advance.

Yes, but you also probably don't know any people who consider the Charlotte Bobcats to be a more relevant topic of sports discussion than hockey. But yeah, if Canes tickets sold like Leafs tickets, I expect I'd have been to maybe one or two games in my childhood, so that's an upside of growing up in a nontraditional hockey market.
