So, it may have taken over 5 hours of driving in horrible traffic, but the Afghan Whigs show in Brooklyn turned out to be totally worth all the misery and woe! I can't believe I forgot what a good show they put on. Yes, but the driving was horrible. HORRIBLE! I still can't believe we made it home. I thought I was going to have to spend the rest of my life living on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway.

Just got back from Swans. They're still very much a band in heat, already mauling the To Be Kind material to shreds so they can make something better. The results are crude, loud, and breathtaking despite how messy and vulnerable their approach leaves them at this point in the new tour. After the show, Gira likened the performance and songwriting process therein to a bad marriage that started with a broken condom and ended in spousal murder. So... I guess that's what they currently sound like. Needless to say, their new stuff should sound appropriately sublime in the upcoming months. I can't think of many artists -- especially those with the type of uncompromising reputation Gira has -- that would allow audiences to see them like this. It says a lot about why Swans do this whole noise-making thing to begin with. Next up, Bad Seeds!

Did three days in Columbus for the Rock on the Range festival (the soreness tells me even my light and reserved headbanging is too much for someone my age). Mostly rainy and miserably cold. Quick run-down reviews of some of the performances:
Kill Devil Hill: Their bassist was the guy in Pantera, so they were given a noontime set of twenty minutes for a few hundred people. Phil Anselmo showed up (his band was playing later) to do "Mouth for War." Phil's a total unlikeable prick, but the performance was pretty cool. Fuel: Apparently Fuel continues to exist. Not the worst act of the weekend. Black Label Society: One of the best metal acts out there giving a very disappointing show. Stadiums typically aren't great for sound, but some bands' sets, particularly this one, were destroyed by an awful sound system that left the crowd with pretty much a wall of noise. Terrible bands like Staind sounded much better, so thank you for that. Slayer: Slayer! Avenged Sevenfold: Night Two Headliners, only stuck around for the first four or five songs then left to beat the rush out (the cold and rain was a factor, but so was the band). Mostly I was just curious if any fans in attended had been reposted. Mastodon: Still trying to get into Mastodon more. I'm thinking this isn't going to happen. Living Colour: Another case of bad sound, but I liked the show. Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience: Not the worst way to spend forty minutes, but if you want to see guys who aren't Led Zeppelin doing Led Zeppelin, there's a bar band that doesn't require driving two hundred miles. Kid Rock: Objectively, "All Summer Long" is probably not the worst song ever, but when you hear it, it's hard to think otherwise. "Nothing seems as strange as when the leaves begin to change." Yes, nothing is stranger than a simple biological process that occurs every single year. The only way it could have been redeemed would have been for it to have been released when Warren Zevon was still alive to collect his cut of the royalties for the lifted piano hook. Jim Breuer Band: Hey, the least funny guy on Saturday Night Live is now the worst heavy metal comedy-singer! Assorted bands I'd never heard of before: Most of them didn't stand out, but a few were good. There was a Swedish band called Avatar that seemed to have something going for them, but I can't figure out what it is. Guns N' Roses: Forget every bad thing you've heard about Guns N' Roses concerts. Did not start late (well, it was within five minutes of the start time) and went until after midnight for a total time of over two and a half hours. Did all the hits and kept the Chinese Democracy material to a reasonable minimum (including the song I really liked off of it). Threw in some cover songs, like "The Seeker" and Tommy Stinson singing "Holidays in the Sun" during one of Axl Rose's frequent breaks mid-set. Axl's voice wasn't terrible, but certainly in far less than perfect form, and he looks fat as hell. Unfortunately a lot of people missed it, as the stadium was virtually empty during their closing performance.

Mastodon: Still trying to get into Mastodon more. I'm thinking this isn't going to happen. Unfortunately, the time to get into Mastodon was circa Leviathan / Blood Mountain. They really haven't ever matched Leviathan as far as I'm concerned.

24 May 2014ce: Crippled Black Phoenix, Academy 3, Manchester, UK. As some of you know, these guys have more than a little significance to me. Their music got me through the nasty divorce and helped me regrow a large chunk of my soul. They're also why I have a sodding great black phoenix tattooed on my chest. Support was a Dutch outfit called A Liquid Landscape who were OK. Then my guys came up. I've not seen them since the new vocalist Daniel Änghede joined, but his voice fit the band perfectly. By the time we got to my all-time favourite track of theirs, '444', I was a sore, sweaty grinning madman with my shirt unbuttoned... and a couple of the band actually pointed me out to the rest of 'em! And after the encores, the sound manager gave me the set list. Here it is... (Yes, that's Journey's 'Of A Lifetime' - they do a superb cover of it.) (No, I have no idea who Tai Greaves is - assume it was a joke on band founder Justin Greaves.) (EDIT: Tai is the daughter of founder Justin Greaves.) It wasn't the transcendental experience my first gig of theirs was (for one thing, I really wish they hadn't cut 'Jonestown Martin' and 'Northern Comfort' from the set list - venue had a curfew, so they had to make cuts), but it honestly couldn't have been. It was, however, fucking superb. PS: Tweeted thanks to the band account & that of vocalist Daisy Chapman, 'from the guy with the beard and the chest ink' - reply; "We Remember you". Which was nice.

I saw jazz saxophonist James Carter at a tiny restaurant last week. It was awesome! Other concerts I've been to recently: Pharoah Sanders Janelle Monae Gary Burton That is awesome. James Carter's great.

I'm ashamed to say it, but the last concert I went to was Fun (I refuse to use their punctuation) with Tegan and Sara opening. However, I am going to go see Gogol Bordello two nights in a row in December! I'm surprised that Tegan and Sara need to open for anyone. I haven't even heard of Fun, by any punctuation.

When I went to see them I meant to pick up ear buds on the way. Realized just as they were walking on stage that I had forgotten and could hardly hear the next day. I worked at a call center then too, so speaking on the phone all day was difficult.

Just spent way too much ordering Pearl Jam tickets for this October (they haven't been through town in eight years and I didn't see them then). Bought two with no specific plans for the second.

Damn Post-Lupin, you have a great concert line up to go to. Only time I saw Swans was during the White Light From the Mouth of Infinity Tour. They were not so brutal at that point, but at least I saw Jarboe sing "Black Eyed Dog" which was amazing. Enjoyed your C93 review. Hope to see them again some time. Hope you have a great time at the show.

I'M SORRY, I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF I JUST SAW SWANS!
and honestly... I wasn't blown away. Other than the sheer sonic onslaught and a couple of the more trance-inducing rhythmic sequences, it felt rather like seeing a passionate sermon in someone else's church. (Knew what to expect, like many of their album tracks a lot... but I just didn't fully connect.)
And there was also this little voice in the back of my head muttering; "Any sufficiently advanced improvisation is indestinguishable from tuning up."

Hey, Liz n Dick and Hugs and Hisses, I just found out from a friend last night that he got us tickets to the Afghan Whigs show here in Austin on Halloween! Woo! Unfortunately, I do have to pay for mine, as my other friend was only able to get two free tickets from the drummer. But still, one more concert to look forward to. P.S. This is the very first time since joining this forum that I have realized that the second word of H&H's screen name is "Hisses" and not "Kisses." I am very observant.

Well, not the having to pay for your ticket part, but all the rest! (Is "I do have to pay for mine, as my other friend was only able to get two free tickets from the drummer" a humblebrag? ) Now that I've recovered from the horrors of our drive back home from the show in Brooklyn, I'm full of warm-and-fuzzies about how great the show was. And about how psyched I am that we still have their Philly show in October to look forward to. P.S. If you knew her in real life you never would have missed the "hisses" part. She's much more hissy than kissy, that Hugs.

They put on such a great show! Does your friend get to hobnob backstage with the band? And yeah, I'm much more likely to hiss than kiss. That's what snakes floating around in balloons do, ya know? Meanwhile, my latest concert report is that Chelsea Wolfe makes killer albums but is not so great as a performer. She makes Mark Lanegan look like Bono.

I just barely got tickets to see King Crimson at the Kimmel Center this September. I had to get $75 tickets because all the cheaper ones had sold out.

So MrsLangdonAlger and I saw Vampire Weekend last night and it was a great show! Cults opened and were pretty good. I only know their first album, but I like what I do know. @scottbaio -- Vampire Weekend opened with Diane Young again here, and while I agree with you, that it seems like it should be a show ender or an encore tune, it was a fantastic way to start it up. People were immediately singing along, jumping up and down, and waving their arms. It got the crowd right into it really well. And then following it up with White Sky kept the sing along going. I was actually kind of surprised how much people sang along. I never felt like Vampire Weekend was a big sing along group, but apparently they are! It was tons of fun. I absolutely adore Unbelievers, so that might have been my favorite moment. You're right, CR, that they stuck incredibly close to the album, but they were really tight, and put on a wonderful show, I thought. I also really enjoyed them ending the set with Obvious Bicycle, which led to people using their phones as lighters used to be used, and it looked lovely (apologies, as I have a crappy phone):

I might have almost cried at Unbelievers, because I was so happy to hear it and sing along with an entire audience. Wonderful show!

Looks like I am going to have to put down money for Jack White. I don't care for the venue, but you're almost never going to see an artist in that stage of career in a smaller setting, and the guy's on my shortlist.

Woohoo, finally got some shows coming up...
August 1st: Free Salamander Exhibit (born from the ashes of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) August 12th: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (one of those bands I didn't want to miss before someone dies) August 29th: Negativland (this will be my 3rd time seeing them - can't freaking wait)

I forgot to get on at 10 am for the Jack White tickets, but it looks like he crashed the hell out of the venue website anyway, and this is just for a pre-sale.
edit: SONUVABITCH. No tickets left in the pavilion, just lawn "seats". Hell, I'll just stay home and watch music videos. I can't believe people go to concerts in stadiums.

Forgot to mention, I didn't make it to the Son Lux gig - knee was still buggered from CBP and Swans and I'd rather heal it up and get back to t'ai ch'i. So my next gig (unless there's a sudden Gazelle Twin tour announced) is Juno Reactor in August.
