For the first time since she was born, we managed to get our daughter her favorite present of Christmas. Every year we think we've nailed it, and since she's our kid it's usually something a bit more extravagant. But then every year our gifts are met with feigned excitement at best, and then they're quickly ignored. This year, she's been all about it, telling everyone she can find about what she got and how excited she is and on and on...
It's a VTech "phone" with games, apps, and limited communication capabilities, like texting and video messaging with only approved account holders in our family.
We had to set operable hours on it (which thank god we can do), because we started getting text messages at around midnight the day after Christmas.

It only took two years, but I finally got the table in the basement cleaned off, and I am now have a place where I am cleaning, conditioning, waterproofing, and polishing my boots and shoes. After that, leather coats and jackets, then maybe saddles and tack. There is something rewarding about taking an ancient pair of dirty, stiff Red Wing work boots with leather that was threatening to crack, and making them soft, pliable, comfortable, and useful again.

I was listening to an audiobook and the reader mentioned Thomas Hobbes, then the phrase "nasty, brutish, and short" went through my head. Then a couple of sentences later the reader used those words. I'm very proud of actually remembering something, even though if you had asked who used those words, I would probably not have been able to come up with a name.

I decided that instead of spending all my time being enraged about the general miscommunication and mismanagement going on in grad school this term, I'd reach out to my classmates and form a study group so we can at least support each other through the next 7 weeks.

I remembered to pay the water bill that I didn’t realize was overdue until I got a cut-off notice yesterday.
In not unrelated news, I actually opened a letter from the water company, when I normally don’t bother because it usually arrives after I’ve paid the bill.

Ooooo check out Mr Well Water over here HA! Although I don't have a well! Most municipalities in the US charge a nominal amount for water and sewer usage at residences. If you’re renting it’s usually folded into the rent. If you have a well and a septic tank, obviously no water bill.

If you have a well and a septic tank, obviously no water bill. We have a well here on the farm. It was all the water we had when I was a kid. It hadn't been used since my folks connected to "city water" once they ran a water line past the house. A couple of years after Mrs. Floyd and I moved back in here, I hooked up the well pump again, rented a trencher, and ran a water line out to the barn. I also hooked up a hydrant on the back of the house, and connected the basement toilet back to well water. We use the well water mostly for the livestock, but if the city water has a line break or something, we can still poop and flush. The well water is OK to drink, but it's really hard, we sit atop a big limestone formation. A culligan sales puke once asked me if we drank that water or licked it.

If you have a well and a septic tank, obviously no water bill. If you own, it can be folded in HOA fees, as well. My "greatest" accomplishment as president of my condo association in the early 2000s was dropping the monthly part of our water bill from $50 per unit to $35 per unit. The HOA board had pretty much ignoring the rising the amount for years. We don't get a water bill in NC, either. It's all included in our HOA dues.

Sure - obviously practices vary, just giving a general overview. I can definitely see it in condos - same idea as apartments where you share a building. Our townhome HOA does not include water, as you may have guessed

But also in Scotland there's no separate water bills (publicly owned, not metered and folded into city tax) as opposed to England (privately owned, metered, big-ass water bills).

It really pisses me off that I have to pay for water and trash in an apartment. My water/trash bill is $62 per month! $45 of that is trash but it's now valet trash so I'm more okay with it than I was when I still had to take my trash to the dumpster. My actual water usage is never more than $7 per month.

Mine’s directly to the city, water & trash both. But we don’t have, like, a separate city tax for utilities to be rolled into. I did just read about pay as you go electricity meters in the UK, which was a completely new concept to me.

Never paid for it while I was in an apartment.

But also in Scotland there's no separate water bills (publicly owned, not metered and folded into city tax) as opposed to England (privately owned, metered, big-ass water bills). Do your taxes sometimes pay for plumbing, too? That was the downside of it being included with our condo fees when I lived in a townhouse. If there was a non-obvious leak in a pipe that (based on bylaws) belonged to an individual unit, it was often in our best interest to just fix the thing rather than try and force and the owner to pay and get it done, since they did not see how much water they were using. (People actually very good if the leak was obvious, and easy to address, like a running toilet or something. But if it was an underground pipe, it was often easier for the association itself to just get it fixed).

The building itself is maintained and insured separately so anything from the front door to the apartment itself is building covered (they're called factors here, but I guess building supervisor, association or maintenance is the same thing). Within the apartment itself is the owner's responsibility (though, at least in my building, home insurance for owners is mandatory and would cover just about anything short of a tidal wave). For a detached or semi-detached buildings you're covered to the front door, then it's up to the owner.

My experiment in cold-brewing herbal iced tea seems to have worked out. I tried this last summer, I think it was, and yes! it works a treat! no need to boil water if you're making iced tea, it's brilliant.

Had a jar that would not twist open tonight. I could not get this thing to budge. I was cursing at myself, thinking, "I cannot possibly be this weak!" This went on for an embarrassingly long time before I remembered that I am a human being with a brain. I don't need to be stronger than the jar. I just need to be smarter.
I then slid a knife in between the jar and the lid. Gave it another twist. Voila!

On Sunday TWBE and I went to a nearby Arboretum to walk around with friends. It was sunny and close to 50, but pretty windy, and there was some melting snow and slick spots here and there. At one point, TWBE stepped on to some black ice, and right as he was flailing I grabbed his hand - he continued to flail and slide a bit for a few seconds, but thanks to my timely hand-grabbing, he didn't fall!

After a busy start, I am having a very slow WFH day today... so I cleaned some random things, like wiping down the top and front of the stove, used the crevice tool on the stairs to get the dust out, washed the kitchen floor rug... thrill a minute around here.

Got $1000 in cash for my beat-to-shit old car within 3 hours of posting it on Craigslist (which probably says more about how awful the market is right now).
