We have one good Mexican place quite near us, but it's a nice sit-down place. Even crappy chain-type Mexican places are relatively few in number. While there is a good-sized Latino population around here, much (most?) are not Mexican. I don't know of a local taqueria that isn't also a pupuseria. It's OK though, because Peruvian rotisserie is the highest plane of chicken existence, and the Latin bakery near us makes awesome pastries for $1.19 each. Yeah, this is what bummed me out about DC. No decent taco joints (the food trucks serve that hipster crap) - only good upscale places like Casa Oaxaca for diplomatic types. No offense to El Salvadorans, but pupusas got nothing on tacos. Problem is the Northeast has much bigger Puerto Rican, Central, and Latin American populations. Mexican restaurants seem to follow the beef trail, hence the sizable population in Chicago. Actually there's an awesome taqueria in Elkridge called R&R Taqueria that's inside a Shell gas station, of all the damn things. I know that's not DC, exactly, but it's pretty close. They have another branch that's a lot closer to my house, and it's just as good! I swear nothing on the menu is over $10 and it's some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. The plantains are to die for. We fight over the last one. Recently, a new Mexican restaurant opened within walking distance of my house where another Mexican restaurant used to be but failed miserably because it was overpriced and not good - we're talking about a prime location right off I-95, between Baltimore and Philadelphia, so if you can't do well here you're fucking up big-time - and the owners/chefs actually came through our neighborhoodm door to door, to introduce themselves and to hand out menus. My brother and I tried carryout from them the other weekend and were really quite impressed. Their plantains are damn near as good as R&R! It has a bigger menu and it's a tad bit pricier, but mostly I'm thrilled that we finally have another decent restaurant in the area. Hilariously, there's a Caribbean restaurant inside a shady liquor store on the highway nearby and they also have Mexican food on their menu. It's pretty good, but they ought to stick to jerk chicken. God. I'm drooling just thinking about their jerk chicken. It sets my mouth on fire in the best possible way.

No one's gonna pipe up for tortas? The large dollop of mayonnaise? The griddle-grilled bun? The heart-choking margarine soaking the bun? The fillings that are just like tacos or burritos? I'll take cake, thank you very much. Not that I don't love heels and little asses, just love me some cakes a wee bit more. Donkey-ll me, guys.

Anymore I order tortas if a taqueria has them, and they are more often than not amazing. My go to breakfast taco place has this just as amazing steak torta. Also don't forget a generous heft of avocado or guacamole on there.

Hacia muchos anos que hable el espanol y no tengo los acentos correctos, pero... [empujando arriba las lentes] ¿No es "tengo" y "Gracias por el regalo..."? ¿Es "el blanco" la nieve?

The "por supuesto" (of course) threw me off, tense wise. Did you mean something like "supongo que tenga una cita..."? (I suppose I may have an appointment/date..."? Please don't mind my pedantry. This is the only spanish practice I get.

Tambien me gustaria ir a Peru. Mi novia trabaja en textiles, y a ella le encantaria ir tambien. Screw accents. I don't have the fancy shortcuts memorized.

Viajaba en Mitad del Mundo y otros lugares, pero por la mayoría enseñaba ingles a EF (Education First). Era un tiempo asombroso. Tengo historías.
