You got your radical rethinks, like Presley's "Hound Dog" (for my money, better than Big Mama's), and Diana Ross's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (not necessarily better, but with a grand flashiness compared to Marvin and Tammi's). But what made a certain poetic Irish ogre turn this mush into a hard classic of paranoia?

I don't know if it really improves on the original, since it's pretty much a note-for-note cover, but more people need to be aware that Weird Al can really sing and handle a straight cover.

Though the same could be said of a lot of the covers in Smash Bros, I think the Mother 3 ones do a good job of converting GBA songs with all their dated soundchip restrictions into something grand and, to use the word as it was properly intended, epic.

Fred Schneider's take on Harry Nilsson's "Coconut". It starts with a nervous, strung out kind of energy, and then it just kicks into gear.

I jest, I jest...
(I honestly do quite like this version of the song though. Even if it just existed to annoy over-precious Smiths fans.)

The original is rad, but this version doesn't have Varg.

I like most of Osaka Ramones, but this is probably my favorite off of that album. I far prefer Joey's voice to CJ's to begin with, and Shonen Knife (I can't find the liner notes so I don't know which one is singing this cover) just add something to it I can't quite touch on.

Johnny Cash's take on "Rusty Cage", from the "I didn't know this was a cover for an embarrassingly long time" file:
Even after listening to the original, I can't imagine anyone but Cash's baritone solemnly intoning that bridge.

I so enjoy the above lately. These are also both excellent covers of Dolly Parton and Vashti Bunyan.

Hey, how come nobody's posted this yet? So, so superior to the original in every way.

Hey, how come nobody's posted this yet? So, so superior to the original in every way. Because it is blasphemy. And I say this as a fan of both Tom Jones and the Art of Noise. (Then again, I actually kind of prefer Jones' version of "Burning Down the House" to the Heads' original, so what do I know.)

I've mentioned this before, but although Prince is obviously an enormously talented person, the idea that anyone takes him seriously as a sexual being just seems beyond laughable to me, so I just can't take his version at face value. Prince's version sounds like it's being sung by a wee boy, Jones's version sounds like it's being sung by an actual man.

In both those cases my first exposure to the song was the cover so they'll always be the definitive version in my mind. While we're on Tom Jones - here's a cover of a Tom Jones song that is both nice and good:

I like the original just fine, but the covers illustrate how strong this song really is.

I didn't hear the original until last week, and it's terrible. Only listen to this version.
