Fireflies! I don't know if central IA is known to have a lot of them, but I don't think I've ever seen them everywhere like I do during the summer here. They're pretty common in June, and tend to go away by late July, only to get replaced by those fucking loud crickets.

A whole bunch of very drunk homeless folks and three young community college girls who got in a shouting match with one after he drunkenly slurred something to his falling down female companion that they thought was a lewd comment directed at them.
Also a bird.

A dead deer on its back, its legs splayed up in the air and far apart, deep in rigor mortis.
A bit down the road, a fawn not much bigger than a small dog, fretfully eyeing traffic from the ditch it was cowering in.

A very small boy (toddler-sized) enamored with my dog who, no joke, tried to take the leash from me so HE could walk Link. It was pretty adorable.

An old guy who was undoubtedly a legit badass in his younger days. Six and a half feet tall, ridiculously ripped for a guy in his late 70s. Arms and torso covered in faded ink that looks like it came from WWII-era flash at the most disreputable tattoo parlor on Okinawa. The elbow spiderweb was probably from six years at Leavenworth after a brawl at Subic Bay. Dude definitely knows exactly what sound an eyeball makes when you pop it out of the socket.

A double rainbow over the Main river in Frankfurt. Yes, a double Mainbow. I am going to Frankfurt in a little over a month, send me all your recommendations. Don't go to Frankfurt! I kid. I kid. It's nice, but to me a bit too much like a big city, rather than an older, European city (I like Munich better). Aside from doing day trips out of the city, I generally stay in the main part of the city, which is everything inside that little strip of park, if you're looking on google maps. For food, I really like Trattoria i Siciliani, which is across the river. I can't think of other places I'd highly recommend. Mainly because they're either touristy places and serve mediocre food, or they specialize in meat. I can tell you the other places at which I've eaten. I've gotten drinks a few times at Bull & Bear. I like their outdoor seating, but usually I'll just stop by anywhere for a beer. A lot of the locals will buy a bottle of beer and hang out by the river in the evening. I still haven't gotten a chance to go to the Stadel museum, but I'd really like to check it out in the future. There's an outdoor market, Bauernmarkt Konstablerwache, that usually has something going on. Last week it was a flea market. The time before that (2 years ago), there was a free concert (all local acts) along with food and beverage vendors. I stumbled upon Opernplatz after lunch, and there were a ton of outdoor food & beverage vendors there. I wish I hadn't just eaten. I think they're going to be set up there for the summer, but I'm not sure if it's just weekends.

We are flying into Frankfurt, but sister-in-law and her husband live southwest of there closer to Mainz. I assume we'll be taking day trips other places, but I don't want to spend our whole trip on a train or something when we aren't really going to be there that long.

Not sure if you're interested, but a half day spent going up and down the rhine by ferry is pretty awesome. There's tons of castles to be seen. I think there's a ferry from Mainz, but it might work better to take a train to Bingen.

A rabbit. That wasn't too unusual, since that rabbit has been living out front for at least a year.
The notable part today? Another rabbit. Yes, there are now TWO rabbits living somewhere in front of this house. Somehow, I expect I'll soon be seeing more than two rabbits.

A dead deer on its back, its legs splayed up in the air and far apart, deep in rigor mortis. A bit down the road, a fawn not much bigger than a small dog, fretfully eyeing traffic from the ditch it was cowering in. A couple of weeks ago I saw a two- or three-day-old fawn get hit by a car coming in the opposite direction from me. Its mother had darted out into two-way traffic, so we'd all stopped, but then the oncoming car started moving again before the wee baby darted out after her. So it wasn't hit hard, but it was enough to flip Bambi and knock him to the ground. This all happened immediately in front of me, and I had no idea what to do, because I was basically pinned there, with the fallen fawn on one side of the road and the shocked (idiot) mother on the other. So I just sat for a minute, trying not to hyperventilate-cry instead of just the freaked-out crying I was doing, until the mother made her way back across the street, stood with the fawn for a sec, and then the little guy struggled to his feet and tottered off with her. I'm enormously glad I didn't see the thing actually die, but I can't imagine that it didn't suffer some permanent damage from the hit. Which is almost sadder than getting killed instantly. Anyway, I'm going to assume your ditch fawn was not related to the rigor-mortis doe. When their babies are really, really young, deer leave them in a safe spot and go out to graze all day, then come back to their fawns at dusk. Maybe that ditch was just the spot the mother deer decided her fawn should rest in all day! (I saw one a few days ago just glading in the middle of someone's lawn. Like, not tucked into some shrubbery, or snuggled safely alongside a house or something. Just plopped down in the middle of a wide-open yard. The fawn was so small I thought it was a rabbit at first. That doesn't seem like the most "no predators will ever find my baby here!" location to have chosen. God, deer are so stupid.)
