Ah and one more thing you need to know before you start shoutboxing: I did your mom. STOP THAT.

When you come into the box, you have the option of joining the conversation that is happening or of trying to start a new one. I would recommend joining conversations when you can, but of course every conversation is started by one person. If all you ever do is barge into the box like a junksick walrus and rant about what's on your mind, without regard to the conversation, at a certain point I will diagnose you.
It is often correct to see what people are discussing in the box before jumping in, and to enter by making a somewhat relevant comment. At some point, you may wish to share things that require multiple shouts to convey. You may think that you should wait for a lull in conversation so the box can give you its undivided attention, but this is a fool's hope. Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Don't worry, everything was screwed up long before you arrived.

If your subject is especially juicy, feel free to just barge in. When Robin Williams killed himself every new person on the box would mention it. That went on for hours.
Or if the box has been dead for hours, go ahead and just start talking. That often gets other people to join in. I once revived a dead box by talking about the worst public toilets I've shat in.

Absolutely. As I said, every conversation is started by one person. I often come into the box with my own inane tangents, but I also try to interact with people's shouts sometimes.
Terry Pratchett's death also resulting in several bargings, to the extent that it became a bit of a running joke.

FURTHER EXPLANATIONS FROM BILLY
1. The Five Categories Of Overshare category 1: multi-person contextual. shout in response to other conversation appears to be in response to other conversation; hilarious results category 2: bon mot. this is where a person says something particularly funny intentionally category 3: this is the mpc category--a shout is taken out of context as being representative of how lame the shouter is category 4: single person contextual. single shout makes sense in context, but appears completely insane out of context category 5: lowest level of overshare--the typo/mistake overshare. shouter tried to write something other than what was written; incompetence preserved
Appendix A: Overshare Failure Every overshare that obtains fewer than 6 likes is a failure.

I am reading the book Away With Words, which is about pun competitions. And apparently one of the most successful competitors of all time is Benjamin Ziek, who, in addition to winning pun competitions, also manages a professional wrestling team and sometimes gets into the ring himself under the name Lex Icon. No disrespect to The Most Popular Commenter, but if this guy ever joins TIF, I think we'd have a new Shoutbox Ayatollah.

I will further relate.
category 6: the passive-aggressive overshare. oversharing nasty things said in your apparent absence, but you were there the whole time and are now oversharing it as a warning that your vengeance will be swift and brutal.
category 7: the overshare up its own ass overshare. oversharing people demanding to be overshared or, more insidiously, complaining that they cannot overshare themselves. the content the user desires to be overshared is not revealed, only the vain attempt to have someone else do it.
category 8: the Dadaist overshare. also an mpc category and specialty. a seemingly innocuous or random thing overshared without any apparent reason for it.
category 9: the unclassifiable overshare. this is the overshare reaching completion. a single shining beacon of light, which in its perfection sullies all other overshares. this category has yet to be achieved, and it is probably for the best as it would end the practice of oversharing forever, except by those too lackwitted to see that the medium has reached its zenith. those with open eyes will see that the game is up and refuse to fasten themselves to a dying animal.
