Paul Darrow, star of cult 1970's/80's sci-fi show Blakes 7 has gone. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48501099Sad days indeed. He's been reprising his role in Blakes 7 for the past fifteen years or so on the Big Finish audios, where he (and the rest of the returning cast) have been simply phenomenal. It's little secret that Blakes 7 is my second-favourite sci-fi show (after Doctor Who, surprising no-one), and its blend of realism, cynicism, humour, realpolitik, and characters makes it a simply brilliant piece of science fiction. Produced on a budget of about £3.99. I know Blakes 7 isn't especially well-known outside of the UK - I think the DVD's are not even available in the U.S. - but it's a show that's vastly worth spending time discovering. If you're interested in dipping your toe in the water the Big Finish audios are a great place to start (they're some of the best work Big Finish has ever done, in fact). www.bigfinish.com/hubs/v/blake-s-7And my own write-up of the series, from this very forum tolerabilityindex.freeforums.net/thread/980/gateway-geekery-blakes-7And while I only ever saw a few episodes, I had a friend in high school who was a fan and insisted the show should have been called Avon's 5 (after Darrow's character) for most of its run, rather than Blake's 7.

I mean, he's not wrong, but even Blakes 7 was a spurious enough title. There were only six human characters (Blake, Avon, Villa, Cally, Jenna, Gan) who were part of Blake's crew from the original line-up, and you have to include Zen, the ship's computer, to get it up to seven. Then they got another computer, Orac, at the end of the first season and that didn't work either. Naming things is hard (if you're Terry Nation).

Dr. John died at 77. Growing up in New Orleans, I can really remember a time that I hadn't heard his music. He was a real one of a kind act, and he'll definitely be missed.

Gloria Vanderbilt. All these olds that I didn't even realize were still alive. I mostly remember 'her' from jean commercials with Blondie and some others, from the early 80s.

I mean, she was also Anderson Cooper's mom... I thought about that, but it felt shallow to describe her by her relationships instead of for who she was. Granted, my memory of her jeans is mostly through other people in the ads, so "boo, me", but she was more than "famous man's mom", or "famous woman's niece", for that matter.

Anderson Cooper in that pic looks distressingly like Teenage Prole. I shall not be backing this statement up with documentary evidence, for reasons I assume are obvious.

Having only been aware of her since the 70's or 80's, I had always thought of Ms. Vanderbilt as being older, and a bit.....toothy, until I saw some pictures of her from the 40's.
It makes sense that she was a model then.

Chandler's Mom Nora Bing Judith Krantz has died. I guess it helps to know Barbara Walters and have some connections, but publishing your first novel at 50 is still pretty cool, and motivational for those of us getting up there who still haven't gotten out there.

RIP to Desmond Amofah, alias Etika. There's probably something to be said about the online video landscape making it easier for your regular Joe to become famous but without all the safety nets traditional fame at least has, including everything pertaining to mental health. But that's depressing, so here's Etika getting down to the Persona 5 battle theme.

I hate to be the one to break this to you guys, but ALF lead human actor Max Wright is dead at age seventy-five.
Apparently he passionately hated working on that show, but I remember him better as Norm Macdonald's boss on his relatively short-live eponymous sitcom of the early 2000s.

I loved that show, and norm's Weiner Dog, Weinerdog! Also, how ecstatic Norm seemed to be about getting Laurie Metcalf for the show, in some of the commentary tracks. Too bad about Max, though. I heard that he really went off the rails after ALF, and had a rough go of it for most of his later life.

He also sexually harassed at least one Avocado/AVC member, asserted that groping people was totally fine and dandy because it's "different" for gay men, and threw a screaming hissy fit when he was called on it.
