Ok, so methinks some of y'all are overestimating Abrams' retcon/retread tendencies (though he's certainly not above them). He's only as good as his foundational material, so I have higher hopes for this than I did with TFA, since with TFA he was trying to build a foundation (not his strong suit, since he always over-relies on hypercharged characteristics). Johnson gave him a beautiful new palette to play with, and given that we know the two of them are friendly, I have little belief in the notion he's retconning TLJ.
What do I think is going to happen? Some takeaways
1) We left Kylo humiliated by Luke and wanting to "kill the past." I think we're going to open the film with him hunting down and savagely murdering the remnants of the Knights of Ren. Kylo is hunting down any and all force sensitive users, Vader style, not out of an Order 66 rule, but because in order to achieve this new order, he must be the only force user in the galaxy.
2) The Resistance survives, likely due to the help of Lando and, likely, some other smugglers and ne'er-do-wells. From there, they assemble a makeshift army of every day folk, many with little battle-experience, in order to save the galaxy and the force users all around them. Think of Dunkirk, perhaps.
3) Threepio is going to play a more central role this time around, at least requiring him to link into a device to get information.
4) What's the overall plot? One of the following: 1) Quest to gather a series of items to unlock some Jedi shit (we haven't really had a solid quest-for plot in Star Wars before), 2) Protect Rey, since Kylo views her as the biggest threat, 3) Last stand at some planet with some major secret that will make or break Kylo
5) Dark Rey/Palpatine? Best guess is they're visions. Palpatine especially....ain't coming back. It's too obvious even for Abrams.
This whole trilogy has been defined by identity/"who-am-I?"...the classic of all hero journeys, just amplified. So, the focus is going to lie on the the Rey/Kylo relationship and how they define who they are now that their role models are gone. Rey will be confronted with the weight of the Force, both the dark and light. Now that she knows she comes from nowhere and is "no one", thanks to TLJ, she will discover the freedom to be whoever she wants.
Kylo will die, likely redeemed. And Rey, in the final scenes, will call herself Rey Skywalker, to continue the name as an honorific.
