Hi, I'm Lord Lucan. I want to start by saying that I bitterly resent each and every one of you for keeping the existence of this place hidden from me.

I tried to tell you about it one time, but you threw your drink in my face and told me to get out. That coffee was hot, sir.

Hello. I'm Chancellor Puddinghead, America's Sweetheart. Don't mention anything to America, though. They'll just deny it.

Hello, I'm signsofrain, and I'm a shy nerd dipping his toes into the college club rooms where the cool nerds hang out. To the party I bring a love of classic video games, and a sizable collection of laserdiscs, what uuuuuup?! (he said, hesitantly)

I couldn't read it due to wearing my sunglasses, inside.

"I met Jack Nicholson when I was about 10 at a party of my uncle's, and it wasn't so much that I knew his films because I was small, but he wore sunglasses inside at night and I thought that must mean he was very important and was suitably star struck by his charismatic presence." -- Emilia Fox

I'm only teasing, of course. I've actually never seen a comment of yours on the site, I don't think. Probably because I don't participate in the TV Club.

As a fellow enthusiast of (and manufacture certified service person for) assorted obsolete technologies, I have a few hundred moldy Beta tapes, and several Beta VCR's. Welcome.

Tell me Floyd Dinnertime Barber how did you get certified? I'm an amateur electronics enthusiast, formerly a certified Apple Portable and Desktop repair technician. I can diagnose computer problems no problem, I can fix really obvious problems in electronics of all kinds (like blown fuses, popped capacitors, etc) but I'd really like to get good at fixing VCRs and whatnot. I have one working Beta deck and 2 that aren't working, and if I'd known more about this stuff I might have kept the bum laserdisc player I recently received from eBay and tried to fix it instead of sending it back for a return. I don't have many beta tapes, actually no commercial ones, all the ones I have are my family's old recorded TV. I've got about 150 movies on VHS... I do love old formats. If I was made of money I might start collecting CEDs.

I don't have many beta tapes, actually no commercial ones, all the ones I have are my family's old recorded TV. I've got about 150 movies on VHS... I do love old formats. If I was made of money I might start collecting CEDs. In the early 80's I worked in an electronics shop, and they sent me to several manufactures schools for products they sold. The "certification" courses were usually only one or two day training sessions. (I am an RCA trained Selectivision CED tech. That training mostly showed us how to change the cartridges for the capacitive pickup needle .) I honestly don't know where you could go to get that training today. I haven't actually worked on a VCR in 15 or 20 years. Old TV/VCR guys might help. although they can be a grumpy bunch. You might also check with local amateur radio clubs, or see if any community colleges have teachers from that era still around. VCR's were good to learn on because they had video, audio, logic and servo control circuits. The electronics of VCR's were generally pretty reliable. The majority of problems I saw were with the mechanics. The tolerances were so tight that when the belts and rollers got worn, it would cause all kinds of tracking errors and such. I recently found a guy who used to have a shop who has some new old stock of belts and rollers. Something like that might help. Also look for TV/VCR/Home electronics shops closing and selling off their stuff. Watch for auction ads. They can be a good source for manuals and parts. Most independent shops I was around never threw anything away. Parts and service literature can pop up in odd places. Keep your eyes open. I would think that there might be some resources on the web. I know there are for antique radios. I might still have a few Beta manuals somewhere in the warehouse. If I do they would probably be Sony or Zenith. I have very few, if any product specific parts, but if you are looking for something in particular, send me a P.M.
