Paleu Funny you watched them like that. From The New World wrapped up a few weeks or so prior to Attack on Titan starting. I definitely don't think Titan benefits much from the comparison (and as I've said I've loved nothing since FTNW as much as I did FTNW), but I found it a thoroughly entertaining action series. But you may want to, I don't know, watch something a little stranger and more outre like let's say Dennou Coil. Actually I might go check what's streaming on crunchyroll (and in the US, Netflix and Hulu) and make some kind of recommendation list at some point based on those, as I doubt Dennou Coil is on any of them (but like if it is? Totally check out Dennou Coil... or Denno Coil, as it is also spelled.) ComradePig Cool. Nana was actually one of those women-leaning titles I've meant to check out since basically forever, like Nodame Cantabile or Yawara!, but never got around to it. (I guess I put it on the backburner when I was kinda lukewarm about the vaguely similarly themed Skip Beat!, which was a huge hit in its day.) Let us know how it goes! Not a lot on my front, but I did follow this thread's consensus and catch up on Chaika: The Coffin Princess. In being a slickly competent BONES action series with supernatural elements and grounded by likeable characters, I could essentially call it this season's Noragami... but more to the point it's pretty fun, as invested in following familiar fantasy conventions (a group of heroes, a quest!) as it is playing around with them (a great war was won against a wicked magical emperor, so let's go around defeating the heroes who have claimed his body-parts and collect them ourselves for his daughter WHAT COULD GO WRONG), plus a couple of knotty mysteries. And a giant metal dragon. I mean I should start with 'there's a giant metal dragon.' Bottom line while it's probably not a likely contender for Series Of The Year like the tranquil beauty of Mushishi: The Next Chapter, it's a thoroughly entertaining diversion that's worth a look why not.

Hey now, the first episode alone of Chaika has an evil unicorn!

I started watching this recently and have been really digging it. Particularly for the medium it's a refreshingly non-idealized/more frank and modern depiction of people's lives in their 20s and all of the problems that entails with careers, relationships and sex etc. It's certainly got its spells of melodrama but on whole, good stuff so far.
Edit: Also, a whole bunch of my 40+ year old coworkers were discussing AoT at work today. Granted, it's the sort of work place where it's not too surprising that people would be into/familiar with it, but it's definitely gotten pretty big into the mainstream nevertheless among non-anime fans.
Nana the manga is one of the greats in recent shoujo series (i.e., series aimed at girls). I think calling it a new classic would be relatively uncontroversial. If the anime is anything like the manga then I'd say you're in for a great story. The manga is on hiatus right now, though. Actually, it's been so many years that I've given up on ever getting a resolution. When you get to the end of the anime, tell me how it handles the whole thing, because I'm rather curious about it. Also, if anyone out there has any good shoujo recommendations I'm down for it. I used to talk about shoujo with Lurky on AVC but the both of us have cut back on that site and I don't know anyone else into shoujo.

sarapen I'm not very into shojo, certainly nowhere near Lurky. This said, I really enjoyed the anime of His & Her Circumstances, a romance frame do about two model students, which begins with the girl competitively loathing the boy but being far too polite within her carefully constructed image to be honest about that. It doesn't really have any kind of proper ending and had some recap episodes (and behind the scenes drama sort of killed its ending and had the director leave) but it was great for most of it.

Coincidentally, I've just gotten my hands on that manga. I only read for a page or two before being turned off by the art. It's not ugly, just rather straightforward. It doesn't have that zing I like when consuming a visual narrative. I guess I could try it again, having no Internet has really pushed me to get through my backlog. I finally started season 3 of The Borgias, for example.

sarapen The Borgias is well worth finishing. As for the shojo thing, the mangaka and the anime director strongly disagreed on how to adapt the series, so you may still like it (or not.)

I get the impression from what I've read it also lacks resolution just as the manga does however, since the hiatus for both unfortunately came from the author's health rather than something anticipated. As far as other shoujo, Kimi Ni Todoke I found to be quite enjoyable. It can be a bit repetitive and is comically chaste pacing wise at times but the characters are all quite loveable and the story's central friend-group I found to be well developed and believable. The male love interest also lacks a lot of the more possessive/controlling characteristics that turn me off in a lot of shoujo. 'Cozy' would be the most apt descriptor for it for me.

I'm rewatching Sailor Moon, I don't know if you can get more shoujo than that. But I'm basically terrible at all modern series, since the only one I'm ostensibly keeping up with is One Piece (and let's be honest, I'm probably 30 episodes behind on it).
I did watch the first episode of Jellyfish Princess last weekend, though. That was fun.

🐍 cahusserole 🐍 Oh yeah Jellyfish Princess is very charming and well worth watching (and a good answer to 'but are there any shows about socially awkward nerdy girls,' like Watamote.) Didn't being it up because sarapen had already seen it.

Bleach was the longest time investment I ever made, and I was just relieved when it was over.

I have found One Piece eminently more deserving (although at this point, I think it would be ridiculously daunting to get into at 644 anime episodes, 12 movies, and 750 manga chapters). I don't think there's another anime in recent memory that has made me cry as hard.

Like Douay-Rheims-Challoner said, I blasted through Jellyfish Princess and even stayed up to 4 AM on a work night reading the manga. I liked the anime, which tightened up the story in the manga. The story's continued long past the anime but it's still not finished. The latest twist is about the heroine seemingly selling herself into slavery to a Singaporean billionaire fashion mogul (look, it's shoujo, you just have to roll with it). Sailor Moon I know is the ur-shoujo for most non-Japanese but I'm a shallow person who nowadays can't stand the look of a lot of animated shows from before the 21st century. I can actually see where the corners are being cut and it's almost painful for me. Perhaps they'll remaster everything for the re-release?

sarapen Sailor Moon is being remade. The remake starts next month, it is called Sailor Moon Crystal. And if we're counting magical girl series, I am more fond of Tweeny Witches than most people. The series boasts a memorably weird art design - a jagged fantastical look that's quite colourful. It takes this style and builds a kind of epic fantasy adventure quest show with some twists (and a nice character arc for supporting player Sheila.) Oh and Princess Tutu, which is a very ballet inclined show.

No there is no old series anymore, my complete memory of that has been taken up by one trailer of slightly skinnier legs! The new version is the only version now because of slightly skinnier legs. I will never be able to enjoy sailor moon or anything from my childhood again..... because of slightly skinnier legs.

I always meant to see more but I forgot the title. @taxman Kids today just have an irrational dislike of fat ankles. When remaking a classic, you have to reinterpret it to fit with modern sensibilities. Everyone below ten years old is basically a miniature Chandler Bing.

Began watching Gungrave and Spice and Wolf for no particularly good reason. The former doesn't seem written particularly well, and I did not expect the latter to give me a plot about the intrigues of currency speculation.

Lemminkainen Gungrave is actually a pretty decently written series... once one gets past the first episode, anyway. It's essentially a lot like Trigun, IIRC some of the same people were involved. Spice and Wolf, however, is lovely.

One series that I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have mentioned before, because it's relatively new: A Devil and Her Love Song. It's definitely not a modern classic like Nana, but it's solid, satisfying shoujo; I liked it enough to buy each new volume as it came out. It hit enough of my shoujo sweet spots, like a lonely, closed-off protagonist who organically picks up friends, and a love triangle where you could actually root for both rivals. I really enjoyed Maria as a protagonist; she's tough and smart, and doesn't let people walk all over her, but not invulnerable; I also like that she stays the protagonist, instead of being shunted aside in favor of her hot angsty boyfriend. Decent art, too.

That said, I don't outright dislike it, but Brandon's quiet and relative passivity is a little annoying.

Oh yeah, currently reading Orange, about a high school girl getting a letter from her future self to stop the death of one of her dearest friends. That one I've only started but I like the premise and it seems like it'll head somewhere interesting. Anyway, that series does sound good, I like that kind of complicated relationship drama. It sounds like exactly the thing to scratch my shoujo itch. I hadn't realized it but I've reading too much juvenile stuff and I need something meaty to get into.

I have a hard time finding new stuff that holds up or holds my interest, which is probably why I'm currently rereading Fruits Basket.

Oh thank god, my Internet was finally hooked up. Time to start streaming again. What's Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero, is it any good? It looks like a bland and uninspired harem show, I need to binge on it posthaste. I've been watching too much highfalutin' stuff like His Girl Friday and The Borgias, I have weeks of brain rotting I need to catch up on.

The first promo for that show was a crossover with Queen's Blade, which is really all you need to know.
