Ha, remember when I said at least I didn't think we'd get swept? Fuck me right in the eye.

"Wooo, not a sweep. At least I can take solace in that. Now the next 48 hours will be me two sides of me fighting. A. Me talking myself into a 3-0 comeback, and B. me trying not to get my hopes up for something that is HIGHLY unlikely. A will probably win, and then A will be crushed. FUCK YOU, A ME!(preemptively)."

Good thing the Kings aren't the Sharks.

Great job, Kings! You definitely deserved it, and I do look forward to the Hawks getting a chance to take it back next year. I'm just sad that there's no more hockey left, as this was one of the best finishes to a Stanley Cup series ever. What a game, and so many near misses before the goal (no OT home wins since 2001, and three this series including the Cup winner--what a thrill that must be). Also, I feel for Lundqvist. Finally got there, and single-handedly kept his team in the series by bailing them out on all those awful turnovers. Kudos, and if anyone deserves a Cup, it's him.

This happened after game 1, and I knew I had to save just in case. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Also really happy that Williams won the Conn Smythe. He totally deserved and made plays happen in all the series.

Well fuck, congrats, I knew it was inevitable but I secretly had all my fingers crossed for the miracle comeback. The Kings are crazy deep.

The Rangers did put up more fight than I thought they would, though really Henrik did at least. The guy was pretty much a stone wall despite the kings scoring 3 or more goals in all but one game in the series. Other than the lone shutout by Quick all the games could have gone either way. Just that the Rangers were good at the beginning and Kings were good at the end. Kind of a shame that I don't think they will have that much of a chance to get back next year, they will lose some of their better performers to free agency, and I don't think Boston will shit the bed like they did this year. But the rangers did deserve to be here. Also, here is a nice little post about Darryl Sutters son hoisting the cup: msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/la-kings-coach-darryl-sutter-son-chris-who-has-down-syndrome-hoists-stanley-cup-061414NO! I DON'T HAVE A TEAR IN MY EYE, I DO NOT! I love this team so much. Top to bottom just awesome.

Canes have hired Bill Peters, who was most recently an assistant coach beneath Mike Babcock in Detroit, and also has head coaching experience with Chicago's AHL team, the Rockford Ice Hogs (eight Stanley Cup winning Blackhawks spent time on Peter's Ice Hogs), as a Memorial Cup winning juniors coach, and at the college level. So, he's got the track record to justify being given the HC job in Carolina. Also promising is the fact that Ron Francis didn't pick either of his old friends/teammates in Ulf Sammuelsson or Kevin Dineen, not because they're particularly undeserving of the job, but more because it shows that Francis doesn't seem committed to nepotism at all costs a la Jim Rutherford. And from what I've heard about Peters' introductory press conference, he seems to have some pretty concrete ideas on how to fix this team's biggest problems (anemic powerplay, falling behind early in games, unacceptable offensive production from highly paid stars). Granted, this is all just going to be talk until October, but any first time head coach's press conference can't be anything but talk, and besides, it was more inspiring than Kirk Muller vaguely talking about "accountability" when he was officially introduced as coach. So hey, at least there's reason for some tentative optimism in Carolina.

Just read that quick is getting off season surgery for his wrist, an injury he ended up sustaining in the series with the Ducks.

Best of luck to him in his recovery. Yeah, I'm not worried about that just more amazed that he made it through the postseason on a hurt wrist. Then again he had the most dominant postseason for a goalie ever when he had a herniated disk in his back in 2012. I also just read that Dustin Brown said the injury to him in 2012 was a lot more severe than this one.

The Canes have been busy re-signing a few players. First, marginal NHL forward Chris Terry, who's shown flashes of competence in fourth line call-up duty over the last two years, has been signed to a two-way deal worth near league-minimum at the NHL level. I think this is a solid enough, low risk signing, even if I don't anticipate Terry ever being a full time NHL player. Then, we resigned Nathan Gerbe to a two year deal worth a total of $3.5 mil. Gerbe was well worth his less than $1 mil contract with 16 goals and 31 points last season, and should be a valuable bottom six winger who can be a serviceable short-term second liner if injuries to other players necessitates this. I think we paid just about right for Gerbe. The only problem with signing him is that he does nothing to give the Canes some desperately-needed physicality as the NHL's shortest player at 5'5". Still, at 26, he should be entering his prime with this deal, and plus, this. The only other player that Carolina has re-signed to date is Ron Hainsey, who will get $8.5 million over the next three seasons. Hainsey was pretty good last year, and playing like that, he's probably worth his new cap hit, but he'll also be 36 when his contract expires, and I'm doubtful that he'll maintain his current caliber of play for three seasons. Still, even if he sucks, Hainsey's contract won't be a Cam Ward-ian albatross, and thus far I'm cautiously optimistic about the moves that new GM Ron Francis has been making now that he's getting the chance to do things of substance.

Gaborik re-signed with the kings for a 4.8 mil cap hit, for 7 years sure. But gaborik can be a point per game player for the kings at 4.8!!!!

I'd be a bit worried about signing any injury-prone player through their aged-39 season, but yeah, holy fuck, barring serious injury that should be a bargain for at least the first three years of the deal, and shouldn't be an immensely prohibitive burden even if Gaborik's just a shadow of his former self by the end.

Kesler got traded to the ducks. Helps them out, but I don't think it makes them that much better. Kesler hasn't been that good the past few years, and I don't think it gives them a talent advantage over the Blackhawks or Kings, they might win the 2nd line center battle against the hawks but not overall against that line. And Carter is better than Kesler.

Free agency time! Spezza to Dallas, Iginla to the Avs, Statsny to the Blues, Orpik to Washington, Crosby to Buffalo, Kopitar to Florida, Toews and Kane to Edmonton, Bergeron to Calgary, 8-team deal involving multiple coaching swaps and Lundqvist changing teams 5 times in the last hour...
How I love the NHL.

Man, Gaborik at a 4.8 mil cap hit just keeps getting better. Stralman went for a 4.5 hit and iginla at 36 for a little over 5. I'm also pretty sure that if he hit open market he would have got some big money in the statsny area.
Also, Ryan miller went from the supposed missing piece in the blues cup run to getting a crap contract from a team that is falling apart.

So, Hawks get their center in Richards (I'm not sure if the Hawks could've pulled off a deal for the other centers they were looking at). It's a good deal for them because he's an experienced guy who can still play, and if he doesn't work out, it's no big deal because of the 1-year, 2 mil contract. He'll give Teravainen another year to develop, too.

For some reason I've found the decline of Ryan Miller to be fairly hilarious. I'm probably just a really mean person, but whatever. It's not like there isn't plenty of decline to laugh at in my team's nets -- has Brodeur found someone else to cost a playoff berth next season yet? (Meanwhile, the Devils brought back Scott Clemmensen to try to get a piece of the backup job? SCOTT CLEMMENSEN? Gah! He's like my nemesis! Why must Lou always, always, always insist on bringing back players we were happy to see go?)

The Canes have signed physical fourth liner Brad Malone to a two year deal, 31 year old goalie Drew MacIntyre to a two-way contract to make up for the loss of Justin Peters, and re-upped Jiri Tlusty to a one-year $2.95 mil deal. GM Ron Francis says he plans to add another fourth liner and a depth defenseman. Says he likes the roster, which, incidentally, hasn't made the playoffs in five years. I wasn't expecting anything major; Jim Rutherford really left this team with a boatload of albatross contracts. But I would've liked to see us go after a nice third line center or wing, and maybe a solid second-line defenseman or at least someone expected to play third line minutes instead of just the seventh defender that it seems inevitable will be all we do on the blueline. But instead we let a solid third liner like Brett Bellemore walk and appear to only care about replacing the also-departing Komisarek. MEH. At least we've got a solid chance at a top five pick in a loaded 2015 Draft.

Dallas has done the best in my opinion. They added spezza at a pretty cheap price for them and then added hemsky(who had 17 points in 20 games for the senators after being traded). They upgraded their team the most by giving Dallas an actual line other than Benn/Seguin.

Both of my teams have had incredibly unexciting free agent periods. I wasn't expecting the Flames to do much since they need another year or two of sucking before they can really start to build upward. The Jets on the other hand really needed to try and find some sort of signing to excite people, Perreault isn't going to cut it. Another year just out of the playoffs to come.

I think they're going to be a fun team to be a fan of next year (after having already been a fun one this past season...).

Toews and Kane both signed to 8-year contract extensions with the Hawks for a cap hit of $10.5mil each. Looks like this begins to answer the question of how the franchise will change after this coming season, as they're going to have to let a couple of very good players walk to accommodate 8 years of locking up two star forwards at $21mil per year. Still, Hawks have one more year of probably being Stanley Cup favorites before they regress to perennial second-tier playoff team.
