Looks like in the wake of being unable to get Spezza (reportedbly a trade was finalized and Spezza turned it down with his no trade clause), the Preds have attempted to rectify their disappointingly low-key free agency period by signing Mike Ribeiro and Derek Roy to one year contracts worth about $1mil a piece. Which seem like solid signings, with both having something that they could contribute to a bubble playoff team, and neither likely to make an already anemic offense any worse. So, there's a couple of low-risk high-reward signings out of Nashville today.

Ribeiro signing for only 1 mil at 1 year seems ridiculous to me. This guy was a point per game player like two seasons ago. Wonder what went down exactly in Phoenix for this to happen. Roy is more understandable though.

I know that he was bought out in Phoenix for behavioral reasons, but short of him organizing a rebellion against Laviolette that leads to the Preds missing the playoffs, this is a steal for Nashville. Roy, on the other hand, should be well worth the $1mil, but he seems pretty clearly on the downside of his career, whereas Ribeiro's poor year with the Yotes seems like a bit of an aberration. I still expect the Roy deal to be a good one, though, if only to provide a veteran presence who isn't a horrible person (James Neal, Mike Ribeiro) or injured long-term and verging on retirement (Mike Fisher) to any of the young Preds forwards who may be playing substantial minutes with the big club this season and are expected to be part of the future for this team (like Filip Forsberg).

Apparently there were some rumors about the lightning being a money laundering scheme for the yakuza. Of course this is bullshit, and of course I got this from wikipedia, which makes it more bullshit. But that this is some bullshit that ended up getting notable.

So James Reimer signed on again with the Leafs. Er, great? Are we going to have a mini-Vancouver goaltending crisis here?

This is obviously delusional, but I guess I admire his optimism? Anyway, with Reimer and Phaneuf still here, at least this increases the chances of April Reimer and Elisha Cuthbert being seen together.

Subban signs an 8 year contract extension with the Habs for $72mil. That's a lot of millions, but Subban is doubleplusgood at hockey, and he and Price are the biggest reasons that Montreal is a legit competitor in the East at the moment.

It is truly bizarre (and also creepy) hearing about how obsessive the Canadian media is over NHL players wives. Not that the US doesn't do the same with football or whatever, just weird that offseason surgery for Hurricanes captain Eric Staal barely warrants a cursory mention on local news outlets, whereas in Toronto, players' wives have news articles bashing them over their tweets.

Honestly they aren't, that's one of the few instances I can remember where it really happened when it wasn't also involving the player himself. Plus it's Toronto, everything there is weird when it comes to the leafs.

I think soccer players wives get it the worst. That was the sport that came up with the term WAG, wives and girlfriends.

The only other wives I can think of are Colleen Howe, Janet Gretzky, and that time Anna Kournikova may or may not have been married to Sergei Fedorov.

I have been in something of a hockey hibernation for the last couple of seasons, probably because of the whole Kovalchuk thing, and then losing Parise, and perhaps because of how depressing the Neverending Twilight of Martin Brodeur has been, but you know what? I think I'm getting over it! You guys, HOCKEY IS COMING SOON!

I'm very excited for hockey coming back. Because baseball in Phoenix has been a disaster this season. There is very little chance the Coyotes could do worse. Yes!

There's nothing like going into a season with high expectations. "Just don't be worse than the shitty baseball team!" is a great place to start!

As a former thrashers(RIP) fan who became a Kings fan(NOT BANDWAGON, JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE RIDICULOUSLY GOOD LUCK IN LIKING A TEAM THAT WAS FLOUNDERING AND THEN MADE A GREAT TRADE FOR JEFF CARTER), the Devils situation was weird. I wanted to see Kovalchuk do good, but also wanted to see NJ suffer for trying to cheat on the contract. The fact they got that first round pick back irks me, but hey, Kovalchuk playing in the KHL is great.

Hell, the Senators flat-out, openly admitted they were doing it with Alfredsson. I don't mind the league stepping up and saying enough's enough's by voiding the deal, but it seemed pretty arbitrary to penalize the Devils with the draft pick thing while letting shit like the Luongo contract stand without comment (or letting the Flyers have a handful of retired players on years-long LTIR to avoid cap penalties).

I would have been completely fine with the Canucks, flyers, and sens getting punished as well. Especially the canucks. The fact is that the devils were just the first ones to be made example of. I also think they should have never gained the first round pick back on principle. Since they were stupid enough not to choose the first rounder the year they went to the Stanley cup finals. If they didn't get it back, then they would have lost the high draft pick this year. It isn't like they were banking on Kovalchuk defecting to the KHL to get the pick back.

Oh my god, do NOT get me started on them keeping that post-Cup run pick. And to draft Stephane Matteau's kid. UGH. Anyway, I do realize that I'm in the minority of people who don't have a problem with the league backing off on the draft-pick penalty.

Watching the annual Leafs-Flyers pre-season game here in London, home of the Eric Lindros Legacy Research wing of the University Hospital. I'm watching the Devils/Rangers preseason game with my mother. She and I were so giddy before the broadcast started, all, "OMG OMG OMG HOCKEY ON OUR TELEVISION AGAIN!" We remained delighted even through the pre-game, despite it being the Rangers broadcast. And then they cut to the ice just before the puck-drop, and showed us the Devils crease, and Sam Rosen said, "It's our old friend, Scott Clemmensen!" And my mother and I both groaned, "My god, this season sucks already." Of all the highly questionable old people Lou has welcomed to Devils training camp -- who range from "surely he died in Vegas?" to "utterly venal" -- I think Clemmensen is the one who most annoys me. No, wait, Jordin Tootoo annoys me more. No, wait, Scott Gomez. Man, what is Lou thinking?

I watched some Jets preseason hockey the other night and yet again steamed that despite all the big promises the shift to rogers is only going to let me watch maybe 2 more Flames games this year... Fuck you region lockout, clearly the reason I don't go to more Flames games is being able to watch them on tv, not the 15 hour drive to the Saddledome.
