Crime Scene Kitchen, I love you, but I'm begging you to stop re-explaining the premise to every single team in every single challenge as you judge their bakes. "Well, it looked awful and tasted even worse. I hated this dish and hate you for making me eat this...but, hey, if the mystery bake happens to be a Moldovan raisin buckwheat log you might just be safe!" Yep, they know that. The viewers know that. Everyone knows that. Stop that.

#RationalAnger
I watch a lot of Prime Video on my TV, mostly old seasons of Top Gear. The show isn't on Prime proper, but you can watch it through Prime on Freevee, which is ad-supported. I don't mind this so much, since by "watch" what I really mean is I put it on while working in the kitchen or doing chores, etc. The ad breaks are annoying, but it's not like I'm sitting there suffering through them.
Lately I've had an issue with Prime getting stuck. It'll act like it's buffering, but it won't ever start playing again, and even if you try to exit out of the program back to the dashboard, the dashboard won't load. The dial spins, but it's effectively crashed. Even if you take it a step further and exit Prime entirely, it wont' restart. It's dead until you unplug the TV and wipe the memory. This happens maybe every other day. This is really annoying and is worthy of #RationalAnger in and of itself, but what's infuriating is the pattern I've recognized.
When the Prime app fails, it is always at the beginning of an ad roll. Freevee's ads are destroying my TV.

That is, assuming Freevee is better than every other ad supported streaming platform I've encountered and has a library of more than 3 ads at a time that can be served up so you only get it once every other day and not, say, the same goddamned ad 4 times in a row.

Did Paramount just start allowing users to stream Showtime content recently because it used to be an add on. Just last week I clicked on Penny Dreadful and saw that I could watch it now even though it had the little Showtime tag on it. I, uh, borrow the Paramount+ login but it seems odd that my brother-in-law would add Showtime since they primarily have it for Star Trek. On a side note, we're rewatching Penny Dreadful because it's spooky season and it's awesome.

We used to have the Showtime service included with our cable package, and now it's free Paramount+ instead.

Just really uninspired and went on for waaay too long (I'd guess to compensate for the final task lasting about five seconds or something).

I watched Season 4 episode 7 of Only Murders in the Building.
This season is a mess! I'm enjoying it a lot, but wow, it is a mess! First of all, this episode, episode 7, was ridiculously funny. Just amazing. There's a wonderful fight scene between Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy which is such dumb fun! I was literally crying laughing. There were so many incredibly funny lines in this one, and amusing visual gags.
And wow, there is such a sweet, romantic scene between Oliver and Loretta. Wow, Martin Short and Meryl Streep have strong on-screen chemistry.
Truly, this episode was great.
However, the season overall is still a mess. The first episode set up this really creepy murder mystery, and the rest of the season has left that behind and gone for "wacky and zany Hollywood parody!" And there are seemingly a zillion characters this season.
I am finding the writing this season to truly be so messy that I cannot tell if stuff I'm seeing is simply sloppy writing, or a deliberate clue. And I mean, this is big stuff. I cannot even begin to theorize this season because there is stuff like this:
In S4 E5, the Hollywood producer Bev tells the trio that Sazz called her the night Sazz died and left her voicemail. She shows them this voicemail, and the audio plays. It came in at 11:07pm. And Mabel says this is right before Sazz died, which we believe was between 11pm-11:30pm because they know the time the incinerator was used.
But Bev was in Los Angeles that night and Sazz was in NYC. So, if Bev got a voicemail at 11:07pm, then Sazz called her at 2:07am NYC time. Meaning... she's not really dead?
Edited to add: Okay, I asked some people about this and they said the iPhone will change the time on voicemails to the timezone you are in. So, that answers this. Thank goodness. However, it doesn't change a lot of my other issues.
And hilariously, in episode 7, they conclude that the killer has been after them since Season 1, because they remember the sloppy writing in Season 1. The writers deliberately call back to these unexplained issues from season 1. Like, who poisoned Winnie the dog?
And then more sloppy writing occurs because they dismiss Jan as the person doing that*, because the note Olivier found was written by someone left-handed, and they claim Jan isn't left-handed because of the way she holds her bassoon. Um, guys? The bassoon is a left-handed instrument. Left-handed people hold it normally, with their left hand on top. This is the same way right-handed people would hold it. The video they show of Jan shows she plays it that way. So, the show is going for a joke for Eva Longoria here, but it is allowing them to dismiss a suspect based on totally untrue info. Again, I can't tell if the writers are doing this deliberately or this is just sloppy. Charles is right there! He could have just confirmed that Jan is right-handed, rather than go for a sloppy joke that doesn't do what the show claims it does.
There's so much stuff overall in this season that is weird and unexplained, or worse, unexamined. Like, Charles is still getting texts from Sazz's phone, but seemingly not from Sazz. Why doesn't he ask Det. Williams to trace the location of that phone? And there are just so many crazy characters doing weird things that it is impossible to separate signal from noise. And the writers can't even settle on which character was the intended target of the murder! Like, they're leaving open a possibility that two separate stories are going on here. (Which is kind of what happened in Season 1!) But I can't tell if that is what they are trying to do, or if they just aren't paying attention to details.
I'm curious to find out if there even is a way to logically make sense of everything they've depicted this season. It feels like the writers have decided to sacrifice mystery plotting logic for the sake of making funny jokes. Therefore, I cannot even begin to theorize on what is really going on. I've basically given up even trying, and at this point I'm just having fun with hanging out with the characters. And episode 7 really delivered there. Melissa McCarthy was so funny. Meryl Streep was hilarious. Longoria, Galifianakis and Levy were great. Molly Shannon nailed her lines. And the core trio were all so much fun to hang out with.
*An earlier episode had Detective Williams tell us that the FBI think Jan is the killer, or rather than she arranged for someone to do it. Gotta say, I personally would find it hilarious if the show ultimately lands on, "Yeah, Jan arranged the whole thing". Now, I don't think this show would do that. But, damn, having the solution be "The FBI was right" would be quite a twist!

I watched the first episode of AppleTV's Disclaimer. This is Alfonso Cuarón's show starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. AppleTV has the first episode available for free. Which is great for me, as I cannot afford another streamer right now, and I am waiting for OMITB to end so that I can switch from Hulu back to AppleTV.
The subject matter/story here doesn't really interest me. I read a synopsis of the book and it didn't grab me. However, I love Cuarón and Blanchett. And wow, I am excited to see Kevin Kline in this. The cinematography is being split between Emmanuel Lubezki and Bruno Delbonnel, so you know it is going to look great, if nothing else. I'm hoping the look of it and the acting talent will overcome my ambivalence to the story. And that maybe Cuarón can do something interesting with the story.
There are two episodes available right now, but I only watched the first one. Cuarón pretty much tells you up front that this series is going to play some narrative games, so I am prepared that what we are seeing may not be real, and perhaps that we won't really get told the truth, only differing perspectives. There are three narrative lines being followed in episode one.
Indeed, the first episode does look great! I loved how each narrative line had a different look and feel, different color palettes, lighting, etc.
Thought Kevin Kline carried episode 1.
I'll try to catch the rest of the series later this month. It is only 7 episodes.

Various episodes of The Simpsons season 14. International House Hunters (ca. 2018). NFL highlights from previous Sunday. NWSL Raleigh v. LA. Excepting the athletic prowess demonstrated by various NFL players and NWSL players, the western world's eminence doubted by this skeptic.

Well, we had settled into a nice Elementary comfort binge in the final weeks of summer, but with the fall TV season kicking into high gear we nearly always have something new to watch every night, which I find vaguely annoying for some reason. Together we've been watching Abbot Elementary, Crime Scene Kitchen, Great British Bakeoff, Taskmaster, and we've recently added the new season of Heartstopper to the rotation. Soon we can toss Lower Decks, Shrinking, and What We Do in the Shadows onto the pile. Solo (while C and/or the kid naps and I don't have any grading to do) I've been watching Agatha All Along, English Teacher, and High Potential. I imagine we'll keep up with Elementary as the "neither of us wants to be paying 100% attention" option while our other summer shows--X Men '97 and Doctor Who--get pushed onto ever more distant backburners. Weren't too into those anyway.

We are now caught up on the new season of the Frasier reboot, with a few episodes left to go. Rachel Bloom showed up in the last one as Bebe's daughter, Phoebe, and was a delight as always. It's not a GREAT show, but it still has some of the farcical elements that made the original fun to watch. And Frasier is maybe just a little more humble of a character. Maybe. Though he still seems to keep forgetting that Freddie is just like Martin, and maybe HE is the odd one out.
We also watched the last episode of the season for English Teacher, which is a great show, though I want to smack Evan upside the head a few times. It's raunchy and funny and sweet.
Started the new season of Abbott Elementary, back and good as ever.
What else. What We Do in the Shadows next week. We'll watch the new season of Shrinking but probably wait till most of the season is out. And a friend of ours recommended Colin From Accounts, which is an Aussie comedy on Paramount Plus.

Pleasing. Heartwarming news story task was my fave - both teams. Zaltzman's concoction a bit overzealous, I'd say.

Max Headroom, Season 1 Episode 1 -1987
I watched this series when it first aired, but I had forgotten just how unique and weird it was. It works still today as sort of an alternate retro history dystopian fever dream, and a brilliant criticism of TV, the broadcasting industry, and capitalism and the world itself. I wish I could find the original British version, I saw it once and it was even nastier than the US network version. Good stuff.

Taskmaster (S18:E6)
Best episode of the series, so far. Zaltzman's elixir; Zaltzman's fishing; Zaltzman's pigeon. Liked the Zaltzman this ep. Everyone's puppeteering was great. The banter explaining each puppet vignette was also wonderful. Rosie's puppet proved most, most disgusting. For the robot defusing, I loved Rosie's salty degradation of Alex.

I might return with fuller thoughts later, but yo, if you're into what I call "light procedurals", where a gifted sleuth consults with the police to solve murders and catch bad guys all while cracking the occasional joke, then High Potential is very likely a show for you. Firing on all cylinders from episode 1, it promises to be the next Psych, Castle, The Finder, Lucifer, etc. It's right in that pocket.
Streaming on Hulu.

Last night I was surfing around for something to watch, and I ended up on Tubi, as one does, and was looking through their classic Dr Who listings. Their episodes for the first Doctor includes several episodes that were "lost" and reimagined as animated with the original audio. Great idea. I start watching one and kept getting this weird deja vu feeling. After a couple of minutes I realized that the animation style was almost exactly like Archer. It made it really difficult to keep from giggling, and I kept expecting the Doctors companion to say "Sploosh".

Agatha All Along, episode 7
It's Patti LuPone starring in LOST's "The Constant".
A+ idea and perfectly executed. LuPone crushed it and showed why she is a theater legend.
This episode did nothing to counter the theory I mentioned in the Marvel thread. Which, for the record, is that this isn't the real Witches' Road. Instead, they are all trapped inside a spell unconsciously cast by Billy. Which is why the entire production design looks like a fantasy-obsessed teenager's idea of a fantasy road with trials to test your skills. This also explains Agatha's many quizzical responses and comments. Meaning, Agatha actually knows what is happening. She knows it isn't the real Witches' Road, because she's been on the real one.
This is a fascinating theory which essentially makes this show Wandavision 2.0. However, if this is true, the show has an excellent opportunity to give a satisfying ending rather than the goofy CGI battle that ends Wandavision.
We'll see. Next week is the finale.

It was a pretty much perfect episode. When the credits started with "Time in a Bottle" I nearly burst into tears. That song and the singer's tragic history already make me sad, so it was a perfect match to the show. I think your theory about the Road is spot-on too.

Yes, the episode is just perfectly executed from top to bottom. Ah, Patti LuPone, I just love you so much!
To be fair, that theory is not mine. It came from Joanna Robinson over at The Ringer. As soon as she said this, I felt that it must be true. I rewatched all 6 episodes that had been released, and that theory 100% hangs together. Agatha is constantly responding in a way that makes it seem like she both knows this isn't real and that Billy is responsible.
This also makes me wonder if these people are really dead. Agatha seemed to be pondering this, too, after Mrs Hart (Sharon) died. Episode 4 has her looking down at the body and she mutters "I didn't think you had it in you" and this is such a weird comment at first. Billy even asks, "Who had what in them?" and she just winks at him. But if she knows this is all a construct of Billy's, this makes perfect sense. It also matches in Episode 6 when he is throwing a tantrum about how killing other witches is not who he is, and Agatha gets in his face and whispers "Are you sure?"
This also makes me incredibly curious about why Agatha is playing along with this. It makes her a much more interesting character than if this whole Witches' Road is real, so I hope this is what is going on.
