What concerts have you all been to recently? What concerts are you going to go to?
In the past couple of months I've seen Neko Case, Laura Marling, Arcade Fire, Johnny Marr, and Best Coast. I'm gonna see Chvrches next week, and in December there's a big shindig with Arcade Fire, Phoenix, Lorde, Capital Cities, and a few other bands that I'm trying to get tickets to.

Since summertime I've seen Tomahawk; Rabbit, Rabbit; Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Dawn McCarthy; the Melvins; Grails; Mark Lanegan; a Masada Marathon; John Zorn's Song Project; Moonchild; and a full-day event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art featuring a dozen performances of John Zorn compositions. I've got nothing on the docket in the near future, but I'm hoping 2014 will at least include some sort of new material and accompanying tour from Greg Dulli.

Last concert I went to was Leon Russell and Bob Dylan 3 years ago. They were both great!

Made a point of going to more gigs this year. The line-up included;
Fuck Buttons, The Haxan Cloak, Lustmord, Teeth Of The Sea, Thought Forms, Esben and the Witch, Marnie Stern, Steve Hillage, Blueflint (Scottish folk outfit, friends of brother-in-law) and (most recently and triumphantly) VNV Nation. Hoping to catch Daisy Chapman (occasional Crippled Black Phoenix vocalist) on her solo tour, and booked Imelda May for the day before my birthday.

Most recently I saw Mazzy Star. Other concerts this year have included Mark Lanegan, Pet Shop Boys, and My Bloody Valentine (natch). I've been way too busy to go to more things, but now that work has tapered off some I'm looking forward to more shows again.

Been in a bit of a funk as of late, and had some unexpected expenses pop up, so I've been opting to stay in a lot more than usual lately. If memory serves, the last show I saw was The Coup back in June, which was freaking amazing. (If you haven't already, go get Sorry to Bother You immediately. One of the best albums of 2012 imo.)
Next up: Pearl Jam and Mudhoney on November 29th, the day after Djshe's birthday (which, yes, happens to fall on Thanksgiving this year). PJ is one of her favorite-of-all-time bands, so this was the easiest birthday shopping ever.

I spend way too much money on concerts. Let's see, recently I've seen Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, AV/Hideout Fest with Trampled by Turtle, Neko Case, Superchunk, Hold Steady; I saw the Pixies and THE MATS at Riot Fest (which made me feel 100 years old. I feel like I'm missing some, though.

Austin City Limits Music Festival last month. Ridiculously great lineup. I saw...
Friday: Savages, Smith Westerns, Local Natives, Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, QOTSA, Depeche Mode Saturday: Autre Ne Veut, Haim, Junip, Portugal. the Man, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, The Cure Sunday: Toro Y Moi, Tame Impala, Atoms for Peace (I missed Phoenix though)
EDIT: also on Sunday at ACL, I took time to comment on the AV Club's review of A Star is Burns during DAWES' set. It was the most AV Clubish moment ever.

This week I saw Albert Hammond Jr. from the Strokes on Monday--not the best show I've ever seen, but really nothing to complain about (especially since it was a freebie for me). Last night I saw a Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers show (best live band no one has ever heard of)--always a great night and a personal recommendation.
Looking forward to Frank Turner next weekend even though I was not impressed when I saw him open for Social Distortion three years ago.

2012 was my big year, with seeing Springsteen twice. However, thanks to my friend needing help selling pizza, I've gotten to see Cake, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Steve Earle, and David Byrne with St. Vincent.

I'm gonna see Chvrches next week Talk to them! I posted elsewhere, but they couldn't be nicer and appreciate questions that aren't music-related (or about music that's not their own). I rarely go to shows without trying to stay after and talk and get pictures with whomever is playing. I've been moving constantly for political job-related stuff, so my only real fun has been concerts. Thus, I've spent a ton of money. NICENESS POWER RANKINGS: Zola Jesus (old acquaintance) Blessed Feathers (new acquaintances) Anamanaguchi (they have better video game taste than I thought they would) Chvrches (we Facebook chatted a little bit, even) Crystal Castles (they love cats) Oh Land (swoon) Saint Vincent (#4 celebrity crush) Nina Kraviz (#2 celebrity crush; I met both of them within 24 hours; it's a pretty good story) San Fermin Pictureplane KEN Mode Bat For Lashes Stagediver The Dodos Maria Minerva I'm in Wisconsin, so touring's slowing down here now that it's cold, but I'm seeing Tim Hecker and Oneohtrix Point Never this weekend in Minneapolis (I wouldn't have bought the tickets now that they announced a January Chicago show) and Jon Hopkins soon. Crystal Castles in Chicago is actually the best show I've been to, and Milwaukee nearly matched it.

I don't have a lot of extra money to spend on anything these days, so concert tickets are a massive luxury. I have to save for a long time to afford it, so I basically wind up seeing G. Love & Special Sauce whenever I have the money and they're in town.
There have been other acts I've wanted to see live, but damn, I love the crowds at G. Love concerts so much and I know for sure I'm going to leave there feeling happy. I don't just want that feeling, I NEED it, and so I spend my dough on G. Love.
My friend did buy us tickets to see Eric Hutchinson live a couple of years back, since he had been the opening act for G. Love and we liked him. Similar crowd, very upbeat and fun. Good for my soul in these dark times, for sure.

I saw Frank Turner a couple weeks ago and it was fantastic.
Before that was Bob Schneider, which isn't a huge deal since he's from here and plays every week, but it was a particularly good show where he played much of his new album. Other notable things from that night: my new manager was also at the bar, we joked about both calling in sick the next day, I actually did get sick and ended up way drunker than I should have been due to some sort of bug, but I couldn't call in sick because I saw my boss at the bar!
I saw Black Sabbath this summer, which was a magnificent experience, given their influence on my musical tastes from way back.

I would like to see Motion City Soundtrack in Chicago next month.

I saw NIN about a month back here in DC. That was actually the first legit concert I've been to in a decade (most of my musical outings in the past 10 years have been clubs and electronic music festivals). I had never seen them before, and frankly I stopped listening to them regularly after Downward Spiral (although last year I finally went through and listen to all of their albums since), but they were pretty good. They played mostly stuff from the new album and some classics (Hurt, Terrible Lie, Head Like a Hole, March of the Pigs, Piggy) which was pretty great to hear live. Their lighting arrays and effects were god damned amazing though. I was in nosebleeds of a giant stadium, so that was mostly what I could appreciate at the distance. Best light show I've ever seen.

I've had to scale down this year after pretty much maxing out a credit card going to gigs over my first twelve months in Melbourne. Between July last year and July this year, I saw (among others):
Stone Roses Azealia Banks Paul Simon Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (2nd time but first in front of a home crowd (for Nick, anyway) and it was transcendental) Radiohead (the first time I have seen them where Thom seemed to be in a good mood - he smiled AND laughed!) Bruce Springsteen (a life-long dream come true, he touched me and I touched him back) Black Sabbath (horrible, horrible seats behind the stage but a pretty good show) Neil Young & Crazy Horse A$AP Rocky (I'm a fan but that was the first paying gig I've ever walked out of) Manic Street Preachers (another of my favourites, first time I've seen them not at a festival and it was amazing) Dinosaur Jr (a real disappointment after the first couple of times I'd seen them, Lou packed a sad and walked off because of sound problems and wouldn't come back until we'd chanted his name) Emmylou Harris Major Lazer Thurston Moore Morrissey (he opened with Shoplifters and I felt like my life was complete)
For the coming summer I've had to tone it down, currently all I had booked (minus Fleetwood Mac who have had to cancel):
The Bats and Neutral Milk Hotel tomorrow night (the latter being another life-long dream type deal, the former being a long-term favourite but also a band I know intimately, have seen many many times and some of whom are immediately related to one of my best friends) Dolly Parton The Roots Okkervil River (hoping to fit into the t-shirt I bought at their gig in 2007, we'll see how that goes) Solange The National Nine Inch Nails (they're playing with Queens of the Stone Age but I will time my gigging so I arrive as they finish or leave before they start)
I'm really trying to limit myself to just those bands but if either David Bowie (extremely doubtful but, hey, so was a new album) or Janelle Monae annouce a gig, I will be there in a heartbeat.

From 2007-ish to last year, I went to concerts all the time, but after a bad breakup this year I was in a pretty big funk, so I didn't see a ton of shows, but I did most recently see Unknown Hinson, which was super-fun, and Neutral Milk Hotel, which was transcendent. Before that it was probably Yip Deceiver back in like May.

I'm not mad about it, just envious. I guess I can hope they do it again sometime, since I've never seen them live, of course. Seems unlikely, though.

I haven't been to a show since I saw They Might Be Giants back in March. Lack of funds, and the fact that I have to drive to Columbus or Cincinnati to see anyone worthwhile means I don't see many shows these days. Last year, I only saw two shows, St. Vincent (great) and Noel Gallagher (surprisingly good).

Oh, and because of my wife, I will be seeing George Strait on his farewell tour in January. I'm not big on modern country music, and I saw George when I was in high school, but the wife likes him, so I will be joining her.

I kind of considered going to a show on that tour just to see Tegan and Sara, but I couldn't justify spending that much and driving that far for a headliner I'm lukewarm on at best.

In the last couple of weeks I've seen Dillinger Escape Plan and Queens of the Stone Age who were both supergreat. DEP get bonus points for having excellent support acts in Three Trapped Tigers and Maybeshewill. Well done to them! It's been a good November.
