I love how Chelseas defence maintain a perfectly straight line throughout that counterattack. A well drilled team.
Other than the chase for the title looking a little less over it was a poor week in the PL from my perspective, Arsenal get their customary loss at the Britannia, and Alexis gets a big hug from Charlie Adam, goalless draws a plenty, and my fantasy team is decimated by injuries and suspensions. Why did Aguero have to get injured just before Man City have a run of playing the worst 5 PL teams in a row? That run should have seen Aguero scoring at a 2 goal a game pace, and why did it have to happen in the same week Fabianski, Chambers and Fabregas get suspensions. Wanyama picking up a 5th yellow tonight for the 1 game suspension would be salt in the wounds, so I'm sure it will happen.

HARRY KANE Some interesting results, some good moments although most of the games I ended up watching over this quick series of rounds did often drag in patches, especially in the middle of the halves, although I guess as the Spurs game showed that same fatigue can even out the league a bit. Despite the occasional hopeful comment that Chelsea was shown up, I think Mourinho will just end up having to rotate his central midfield a little more, whether for fatigue or cards, as it does seem their only weakness (at least in league play) is if that first-choice central midfield is suspended or pushed too hard to be as energetic as usual, but fuck that is the weakness of every team (although often without the benefit of a settled and deserved first-choice central midfield to lose in the first place) except maybe Bayern Munich with the way they occupy and blur positional responsibility. giant.gfycat.com/CleverThoughtfulKingbird.gifI am not surprised this would happen in a game with Liverpool, although I am slightly more surprised that it was Liverpool who actually benefited from it giant.gfycat.com/HappygoluckyRevolvingBengaltiger.gifgiant.gfycat.com/LeadingGlitteringHarpseal.gifGive Arsenal credit for this - when Chelsea's defence fails, it's in a prosaic way that indicates weekly targets have not been met, something that can be solved with a renewed application of some kind of management-speak value from the workers. When Arsenal's defence fails, they make sure to do so with a flourish that boldly lay bare the individual, collective and organisational incompetencies in play, an admiral commitment to admitting the inevitable decay of all things, that chaos can only ever be held temporarily at bay. A Mourinho system has not time for Szczesny's drink of water, it has no measurable impact that can be used in collating the week's successes and failures, but a Wenger system, it recognised that a seemingly meaningless gesture can at the same time posses a certain, let us say, je ne sais quois that so neatly encaspulates the ludicrous display we have just seen, even if no-one is quite sure why. giant.gfycat.com/PeriodicDelightfulBobolink.gifAt least Lampard got out in time to avoid being in another DVD. Also, Mourinho subbing Oscar off for Ramires was the most Mourinho thing.

Incredible day of FA Cup action. Chelsea, Man City, Spurs and Southampton all losing at home. United and Liverpool both held to replays by lower league sides. Hopefully that'll put off all the "has the cup lost its magic?" thinkpieces for the rest of the year...

YYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! What a result.
I'm putting this forward for goal of the season. I don't care that it didn't go in.
Look at Vinny Kompany being made to look the fool by wee Lee Tomlin. Football is good.

Just watched the highlights of the Man City and Chelsea games. That defending by City on the first goal was classic giant.gfycat.com/MilkyAgonizingDamselfly.gifgiant.gfycat.com/SpeedyImpoliteAmericankestrel.gifgiant.gfycat.com/ScientificWeightyBarnowl.gifThere was almost another big shock in the La Liga game, where Real Madrid were playing relegation battlers Cordoba, Cordoba got a penalty off a handball decision, broke a few more times on Real, Real got a goal off a corner, Real put pressure on but Cordoba kept getting breaks down the wings, courtesy many times of Bebe (yes, that Bebe), in the 2nd half, Cordoba actually looked the most likely and were dominating the game for stretches, Real got pissed off, Ronaldo hit a guy in the face and the ref missed it as the guy didn't go down or grab his face, at another set piece a couple of minutes later, Ronaldo then seemed to kick a guy, with the guy going down and grabbing his face (replays from other angles show he did actually take a shot to the face after all), got a red card then in about the 82nd minute and walks off the field polishing his Club World Cup badge on his shirt to the Cordoba fans (hahahahaha, awesome), Cordoba looked like they might at least get the draw if not more, then Real get a free kick on the edge, Bale smacks it in to the box, hits a raised arm, the guy with the raised arm gets his second yellow, Bale converts the penalty, Real pull a win out of their asses, which is a bit disappointing but it was still a lot of fun. GREAT STUFF.

I just watched the Champions' League Final. It was a good time.
Particularly with the hilarious spectacle of other TVs being tuned to classic hockey games (2004 NHL), the Brewers vs. the Twins, and a pair of documentaries on the NFL Network concerning Walter Payton and Barry Sanders. I also had my first beer in a week. Such schizophrenic pleasures are why I'll always have such a fondness for American sports bars.

I watched it too - Juventus played surprisingly well for a 3-1 loss, especially against such a powerhouse. I went to a local pub to watch it (a British-style place) thinking they'd not only have the game on, but there might be a couple other people there watching - turns out the place was *packed* full - not an empty seat there. I ended up going to a American-style sports bar where I was basically the only one watching.

I ended up going to a American-style sports bar where I was basically the only one watching. My thoughts precisely; I usually watch at our downtown "Irish" pub, but the CL finals tend to be standing-room only and I figured some room might be nice this time. The place I chose yesterday got pretty packed for the World Cup games, but not, it seems, for the CL final. The atmosphere wasn't as intense as the pub, but enough people were there watching to make it a lot of fun (the bar was pretty much evenly divided between supporters of the two teams).

Feeling like crap today (got home from work and confirmed it was fever) but followed the Wales-Russia match on my phone and was delighted to see clips on YouTube when I got home. Really salvaged a physically (as opposed to the more usual mentally) crappy day.
