Picked up Skyrim for the Switch, and man, I forgot how easy it is to randomly clip a guard with a spell or an errant sword strike and suddenly have the whole town rush in and try to murder you. I love these games but it'd be amazing if they could come up with a combat system where you don't flail around like an idiot until somebody's dead.

I don't know if I should wait for Fallout 4 GOTY to get cheaper or just suck it up and buy it. I've got the thieves guild, dark brotherhood and dragonborn stuff to do in Skyrim, but I'm kinda tired of it.

I was playing this as a casual game and dropping in for a few hours every couple of weeks. But lately I've been playing it a bunch - I spent like 6 hours yesterday on the couch trying to finish that lost weekend quest where you wake up in Markarth after an alcoholic bender. It took me 6 hours because I kept getting sidetracked by dragons attacking me and dark foreboding caves begging to be explored and whatnot.
I do appreciate that the dungeons have specifically been designed instead of procedurally generated like in Oblivion. I swear after the 4th Ayleid ruin that looked like all the others I just kept sneaking past all the monsters and looting the chests. I also hated closing Oblivion gates and figured out how to run past everything to get the Macguffin.
I also got to Windhelm and sheesh, the Nords are such giant racists. Is it a problem if you're playing a Dunmer character? Anyway, guess I'll forgive the Empire for the trying to execute me bit and just go with their side.

The local loud, racist Nord makes a fuss about it but that's about it. I've never 100%ed Oblivion, even though I love that game, solely because the procedurally generated caves and forts just become a chore after a while. Also of interest to the people of this thread:

They made her look so much like Kate Blanchett I can't completely hate her. But when we get to the Parthunaax dilemna late in the game she breaks my heart every time. Speaking of, I found a mod that "fixes" that issue and it's almost "I have to go now, my planet needs me."-level bad as far as a fix goes.

Gawdammit Lydia's lost somewhere. I told her to wait around the corner while I assaulted a sleeping dragon, but then when it woke up I lost my nerve and ran and hid under a rock. Eventually the dragon got bored of trying to get me out of there and attacked a bear on a nearby hill, so Lydia and I got our bows and shot it down. Then I went and crossed a river on horseback. I think this is the point I lost her since I remember she ran off in a different direction. I wasn't concerned since this had happened before and I knew Lydia apparently couldn't swim. So I did quests and whatever assuming she'd eventually catch up but she never did.
I feel like someone whose dog ran away. I've done some research and people say if you wait long enough then lost followers show up, but I waited 3 days and nothing happened. Someone else said if you got arrested your follower teleported into your jail cell so I punched a guard in Falkreath but that didn't work either. The last solution is that when a quest gives you a follower then your existing one is removed and they make their way home. I already did the early werewolf Companion quest but I assume there are other follower quests. In the meantime I guess it's not a big deal, Lydia wasn't carrying anything important and kept alerting enemies with her lead-footed stumbling.
Also, that Falkreath jail interlude was kind of funny. I broke out of jail and killed the entire barracks, then as soon as I exited the building a dragon attacked the town. I killed it along with the guards but one of them recognized me and threw me back in jail. They couldn't have shown their saviour some thanks? All I did was punch a guy. Anyone could have massacred those guards and artfully arranged their bodies in an aesthetically-pleasing pyramid.

I ate some scathecraw in the Dragonborn DLC, and now the game thinks I'm taking health damage all the time (although I have no status indicator to this effect) and it won't let me fast travel. Since there is no status effect to remove, I can't fix it through console commands without, apparently, resurrecting myself, which will nuke all of my status effects, and then using console commands to add back the ones I want to keep. This is too much like work, considering, so my skyrimming days are probably through.

Uh oh, Lydia might be dead. I was able to recruit that one chick who hangs out at the bar in Whiterun. Is there a way to confirm? Does she get a gravestone or an epitaph somewhere? Apparently she's supposed to deed her worldly goods to me but there's some bug that makes it not always happen.

We're getting this on Xbox to give my daughter for her 11th birthday. She's been asking me about it for a year. Whenever I'd play it she'd linger and just watch. Probably hasn't helped that I've told her a) it's one of the best games I've ever played and b) she can't have it because she's too young. But in thinking about it, really it's only the violence, and it's nothing compared to, say, Fallout with its heads exploding and eyeballs flying everywhere, right? The main concern is our son watching it, so we'll have to regulate that very carefully.

Today's the day we're giving it to my daughter and I'm ridiculously excited. My wife suggested she get it when she gets home from school, because we're out to eat tonight and then when we get back and after she unwraps her other presents, she has to get to bed since they're doing all the testing this week. So her time is going to be severely curtailed with it. She gets an hour and a half with it, which in my experiences with the xbox so far, will be just enough time for the game to install and ask her to setup another GODAMNED PROFILE WHY CAN'T YOU JUST PLAY A FUCKING GAME ON THIS THING ARGGGH

She was so excited. She was shaking. She gave me a death grip hug. It only took thirty minutes to install, giving us a good hour of play before having to leave. So she immediately went to Khajiit (she's reading those cat warrior fantasy books that are a Big Deal right now) for her race. "Humans are boring." I realized that she is just completely untrained in the rhythms of video game RPGs. You pick up Skyrim pretty quickly if you've played other RPGs before, but she's not played any at all so she doesn't know. She blazed through any room she comes into, instead of stopping and searching. She leaves the bodies of anyone she kills behind without searching them. She wants the main quest only; she has no patience for side quests given out incidentally. "GREAT. Now I have to get that Golden Claw TOO?" So this is gonna be some work. "OK, now, you're coming up on a sleeping bear. Crouch down and sneak by him; he's too strong for you to fi--" *She bumbles the sneak feature, and instead runs right at the bear, who immediately stands up* "RUNRUNRUN!"

You pick up Skyrim pretty quickly if you've played other RPGs before, but she's not played any at all so she doesn't know. I remember when the Mrs. and I played Zelda: Four Swords together back on the Cube. It was her first Zelda experience, and my zillionth, so she kept getting mad at me when we'd come across a puzzle room and I'd immediately know the answer. Like, without even fiddling with any of the variables in the room. Just here's the layout, here's the boxes/buttons/torches/etc. Okay, I've got this. I know what to do. I had to explain that even though I hadn't played this game before, I had played many other 2D Zelda games, and their puzzles have a cadence to them. Eventually you can simply intuit the solutions. I finally had to stop participating and let her figure them out. But man, yeah. I can't imagine going from zero to Skyrim. That's a hell of a learning curve.

I noticed after finishing a quest that she was nowhere to be seen, I came to the conclusion that she died. So I ended up loading the save that I last remember seeing Lydia, but she wasn't there either. That save was right after I finished said quest where we came out of a dungeon on the side of this really tall mountain, my guess is she stumbled off and fell while we were fighting bandits. I never went back to that playthrough.

As soon as the quest finished I circled back to the entrance and she came running out at that super-fast NPC speed they do when you're too far ahead of them and they have to catch up. I cheered and I'm pretty sure cried a little.

I should probably finish this quest to learn Shouts from those mountain monks. My friend tells me I should have done it at the beginning since you get useful stuff from it, but dammit I was busy stealing the clothes from sleeping townspeople.
Anyway I have that cannibal lady as a follower now. She's actually pretty useful since she has magic spells and whatnot. Places I haven't visited yet: Winterhold, Dawnstar, Riften. I should get on that sometime.

As I was circling back around I encountered a Foresworn camp. After I cleared them she came running back to me from the direction of the attackers. I didn't stop to confirm who it was and killed her with an arrow.

I thought my Lydia was lost due to Bethesda coding tomfoolery so I console-coded her back in... only to find that there are now two Lydias in the game because the first never died. They both just sit at that meadhall in Whiterun now. None of the townsfolk seem to mind clones.

I just bought the Legendary Edition even though I already had regular Skyrim because I wanted that one house from Hearthfire with all the mannequins to show off your outfits. Plus I get Dragonborn and Dawnguard and it's cheaper than buying the DLCs separately on PSN.
I probably won't get to the new stuff any time soon as I still haven't finished that stupid Greybeards quest. Cannibal lady is still the best companion I've had so far since she also prefers to fight from range so I don't need to get stupidly close for her to finally step in. Plus she can summon a naked woman made out of fire, so there's that.

I've put a few hours into the Switch version, and despite having put a good 100+ hours into the 360 version, it's still fun and I'm still finding new stuff to do. I have Barbas as my follower right now, which is nice because he's an invincible killer dog, but he doesn't know how to sneak (and keeps detecting me in sneak mode) and keeps pushing me into things. Way to go, dog.

So far in this playthrough, I am: - A bard of the Bard's College
- Archmage of the College of Winterhold
- A member of the Thieves Guild
- A member of the Circle of the Companions
- Blood-Kin of the Orcs and Champion of Malakath
- Thane of about 5 or 6 Holds
- An Agent of Mara
- ... I think that's it?
Also, there are these dragons that show up occasionally, and I think there's a civil war going on? Maybe I should look into these things at some point.

My daughter is like, one fight away from finishing the game. But she is surprisingly low level, like only in the 20s. I remember being in the 50s or 60s when I did it. As I predicted from the outset, she's more or less focused only on the main quest; she didn't even know about Dawnguard, for instance. So I'm gently encouraging her to get out there and explore more and do more, because the ending of the game is so anticlimactic, and the game really is kind of done with you after that. Still we got a good four months out of it (she goes in fits and starts with it and sometimes breaks with it for weeks until I remind her about it), about what I got out of it my first playthrough as well.

That's pretty important but first I need to track down some goat horns for my bedroom chandelier. Speaking of which, I should turn into a wolfman in my dining room and see how my butler reacts. Oh yeah, I still haven't reached Riften. It's the last city remaining for me to visit. I'll get there one of these days.

I'd even bought stuff from her before. Anyway I killed the other Redguards because I wanted their scimitars.

Riften is way in the east and all swampy. Markarth is a much more interesting town, but I bet it would get tiresome, walking up and down all those steps.

I finally got around to the main quest, and am on my way to take the hobbits to Sovngarde. I might finally be tiring of the game after 160+ hours on the Switch. I'm not sure I'm going to play through Dawnguard, but it seems more likely than Dragonborn, which seems like kind of a drag.
