This weekend I tried Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout ("an imperial stout brewed with a massive amount of coffee and chocolates, then cave-aged in oak bourbon barrels for an entire year to make sure wonderful bourbon undertones come through in the finish.) And it was very, very good. That said I like Stone Xocoveza just a tad more, if I had to choose.

Coopers Original Pale Ale
This is an ale most North Americans can get their hands on. It is a light, but tasty pale ale. The best description I've read about this beer, that matches my own, distinguishes how much of the malted barley can be tasted in its pour.

I had seasonal ale this past weekend that I liked a lot, but the group tasting was extremely divisive.

I thought it was pretty tasty, too. Spoetzl made the same six or so beers for years and years, but then a couple years ago they finally gave in to craft nonsense and have gone full ham ever since. Some of them, like this, the Candied Pecan Porter, and the Cherry Limeade Ale, have been fun. Others, like the Wicked Juicy Coconut & Pineapple IPA, have not.

I fear it's come and gone. I was only able to get it for about 2 weeks back in Jan-Feb. Maybe they'll bring it back around, though.

It is my birthday today so yesterday we went to a brew pub for whatever the brunch equivalent of lunch and dinner is (lundi? lunner?). They've got a decent selection of stuff on tap: lots of Korean craft beers (which have become a thing over the past couple years), plus a couple German brews and some US craft stuff. I ended up getting a Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout. It was a bit more than I'd usually spend on a beer at a bar, but it was my birthday so I figured what the hell. HOLY FUCK WAS THAT DELICIOUS! It tasted like if a Ben & Jerry's ice cream was a beer. Definitely not the sort of thing I'd order on the regular, but as a one off it was pretty fantastic.

We spent two nights/3 days in Wisconsin Dells and because it's Wisconsin, there is beer all over the place. We went to Moosejaw Pizza/Dells Brewing, Sprecher's (they are mainly known for their root beer but have an entire brewpub with food, house-made sodas and a brewery) and a local taproom on the edge of town called Port Huron. Despite Port Huron itself being in Michigan. Apparently it's named after a tractor.
Anyway, at Dells Brewing I had Hazel's Nut House, a sweet and nutty hazelnut porter; at Sprechers I had their Abbey Trippel which was really tasty with that belgian funk and fruitiness; at Port Huron we sampled a bunch of stuff and then my husband had the Honey Blonde, which I have to say had a really great honey flavor without being syrupy sweet; I had their Scotch ale which was also very nice.

Bell's Two-Hearted Ale totally lives up to the hype--this might have displaced French Broad River Brewing's 13 Rebels as my new overall favorite

I went to Tree House Brewery over the weekend, as it was a stop for a bachelor party. They had 2 massive lines; one for getting pours and the other for cans. 2 of us waited in line for cans for everyone, and 3 of our group waited for beer (you could get 2 beers each). The remaining 3 got a table so we'd have a place to reconvene. It was a 45 minute wait for the draft line. It was a 2 HOUR wait for the cans. That fucking sucked. 1 1/2 hours of that wait was in the sun on an 85 degree day. There's a bar set up for the line of people waiting for cans. However, they stopped pouring there 4 people ahead of us. So that was another kick to the face. I'm never going back there.

We pulled out a bottle of Sucaba I’ve been storing since Feb. for our anniversary tonight. It was ... not as good as I remembered? Seemed a bit thinner and more carbonated? Not terrible by any means. But a tiny bit disappointing. Oh well.

So having now had Kolsch in Cologne and Altbier in Dusseldorf, I will now join the never-ending debate and side with Cologne and say that Kolsch is the superior beer in the Rhineland, even if studies say they are about the same. Pro-tip when traveling: inserting yourself into local rivalries is a great way to quickly make friends and have good times as people attempt to prove their town awesome and the other town terrible.

Just scored 15 lbs of orange blossom honey. I'll be making my first mead soon. I have a bunch of cooked, frozen strawberries from last summer. Might try splitting the batch and making 1. regular 2. strawberry mead 3. cardamom mead and 4. elderflower mead. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, though. So yesterday was my homebrew club's quarterly competition, and this time it was meads, ciders, and wine. I submitted my base orange blossom mead "Don't You (Forget About Mead)" and the cardamom mead "Cardamom Has Got It Going On". The cardamom one took third place, and the straight mead took first! I'm pretty proud of this, especially because when I tried it a few months ago, it had a bit of a sulfurous taste to it. That cleared itself up over time. I'm now ready to do it again and see what else I can do.

Decided I don’t care as much about Bourbon County Stout and bought a 4 pack of Revolution’s Deth’s Tar instead. Saving for special occasion. Also picked up Breuery’s 12 Drummers Drumming for Christmas.

For Christmas Eve post-"kids in bed" libations the wife and I shared a 2017 bottle of the Avery Uncle Jacob's. It hit all the highs you expect of a big ass barrel-aged imperial stout. The kind of roasty, nutty, boozy, and just sweet nectar that coats your entire mouth and lingers for minutes. It's a sipper in the best way.
The shop also had a 2016 Big Bad Baptist, by Epic, and a bomber no less, but we're such fans of the Uncle Jacob's that I'm still glad we chose it, even if it meant only 6 ounces per person.

We drank our 12 Drummers Drumming on the 22nd. It was a straightforward and delicious blend of a quad and a barrel aged anniversary ale. Big, little fruity, everything you want in a Christmas beer.
While in Florida we drank a local coconut key lime ale from Islamorada and a Scottish import, Innis & Gunn’s Blood Red Sky. Both recommended.

I am a total sucker for barrel-aged things. Got this over the weekend: www.boulevard.com/2019/12/02/introducing-brandy-land/It's a spiced imperial stout (cinnamon) aged in apple brandy barrels. Mmm. Appley boozey notes, dark, not tooooo heavy but definitely warming and great for cold nights.

I have a new coinage for Tsingtao: CHINA-KEN - because it's so much like Heineken. I like the adjunct, in most all its forms - as I've indicated. Tsingtao lager is a nice adjunct.

My local brewery is going through a big rebranding exercise at the moment with new labelling for all their beers so they had a big sale on their online shop to get rid of the old stock and with an additional shareholder discount I was able to get these for about £1.20 per can/bottle. Here's my accidental self-isolation-ready haul:

The Wake Up Call is decent, obviously it's not as deep in flavour as a really good alcohol full stout but it's on a par with some of the not so good but more affordable alcohol full stouts that I sometimes drink. I haven't tried the Hazy AF yet, will update when I have.

Most of our local breweries are offering take-out/curbside pickup right now and a few even have delivery available. Very tempted to order a bunch of stuff for delivery. (We have a reasonable amount of beer in the house, though not excessive.)

One of our favorite suburban breweries is offering delivery right now, so I ordered three 4-packs and a bomber, plus some breadsticks for a snack, to be delivered tonight, plus a generous tip. I've got a Belgian Grisette, a Wee Heavy, an Imperial Breakfast Stout and a barrel-aged ESB coming.

The meta picked me up a porter at the local microbrewery and it is really really good, especially with the chili from the food thread. Also it is only 5.5 abv but I am apparently a really cheap date.

Hey! Why did no one from the LOUD thread tell me that King Diamond produced a beer last year?! I know, I know. 21st Century Blues. I hear ya. Anyway, this is probably a wanna-get for you, Djse's witty November moniker . No, I haven't found it. *Screeches in multi-octave howl to ghosts*
Another Nordic Lager I've been privy to sample is Mack Brewery's Isbjørn and Arctic brands. Both are crisp and refreshing. I'm hoping some in UK or North America can get a taste of these. And, who wouldn't want a cheap, refreshing Norwegian Lager synonymous with We Bare Bears' IceBear?

Not sure how many people even read this thread! But can I recommend you check out blackisbeautiful.beer - the project is a base imperial stout that's been shared with basically any brewery who wants it, along with the label art, and then the breweries are putting their own spin on it, with proceeds going to social justice initiatives. I picked up some from a local brewery - there are 26 participating in Illinois alone. The one I got added blackberry for a great tartness at the beginning that mellowed out into a dark luscious stout.

Last time I saw him he had a couple of beers from the Kinn brewery, based in Florø, which were excellent and included this imperial russian stout:

Last Friday I was out running errands and decided to stop into a local liquor store I don't usually go to. They have a good beer selection but I'm realizing they must not turn it over quickly, because anything with dates on it is fairly old. I bought two Almanac Brewing beers that were half off and a 4-pack of Off Color that was still in bottles, even though they switched to cans for most of their stuff last year.
Now, I purposely bought styles that don't suffer a lot from being a little older (we had one of the Almanac beers, a quad, on Saturday and it was perfectly good) but it's still good to know that if I want something fresh, that is not the store to visit.
