"Holy crap! That's 30 cents less than normal. This is the deal of the century!"
*Buys 4 bombers*

Mrs. Snape surprised me last night with a bottle of Texian Black Jesus, the beer with a name second only to its art: It is a dark sour ale, essentially a sour stout, with a subtle roast backbone, bold sour cherry flavor and virtually no sweetness. It's not quite at the level of The Bruery's sublime Tart of Darkness, but it's very good. It also for some reason comes in 750ml rather than a traditional 22oz bomber. That was a lot of sour to get through in a sitting, but somehow I managed.

Wanted to post this in the "Now 'Im Drinking This" Thread but that's pretty dead and it's fitting here too: In the heat of the summer, there's nothing like a Weizen with a splash of banana juice:

I got some Lagunitas Equinox and it is delicious. So citrusy, and perfectly bitter. It smells like my favorite kinds of weed.
I've been craving beer for weeks, now I'm just hoping for the willpower to have a little glass now and save the rest for the evening.

My dad bought a 4-pack of Odell Myrcenary Double IPA. It's spectacular, although more in a "that's remarkable" way than an "I'd like to drink a lot of this" way. It is, in other words, more Joan than Peggy.

It is, in other words, more Joan than Peggy. Odell came to Texas a couple years ago and hit hard. Now it's rare to see a craft beer joint of any reputation around here without at least a couple Odell beers available. Overall I've found their quality uneven, but for sure the Myrcenary is one of the good ones. I also love, love, love their Mountain Standard, which is maybe my favorite black IPA. Also Odell was my grandfather's name, so I like drinking one in honor of him.

MillerCoors just bought Revolver Brewing here in Texas. Read about that. Plenty of similar purchases have been made without devastating effect, so I'm confident everything will be fine. Blood & Honey will keep on keepin' on. This is still a big deal for the Dallas brew scene though. If there's anything that proves you've been noticed, it's this.

Goose Island is continuing pretty well despite its corporate overlords. While it kinda sucks to have local ownership taken away, it means the megabreweries are finally getting the message.

Not sure if related or not, but here's another story on the upcoming burst of the craft beer bubble: www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/08/12/craft-beer-s-looming-crisis.htmlI admit I mainly like the article, because it shares my disdain for the fruit beer trend, even if the occasional good one slips through. I mean, have you looked at Ballast Point's releases lately? What the fuck happened?

They're great for summer. And most of them I've had aren't sickly sweet. They seem to be making a lot out of not that big a deal, though. Yes, there are a lot of craft breweries out there. No, they're not all going to survive. Inevitably the market will correct itself a bit. I don't see that as a "looming crisis" unless we suddenly lose 300 craft breweries from the Chicago area in a year.

Nothing I should probably get too specific about. They have a history of going after other small brewers who choose names that they see as being too similar to their's and most people just cave and change because they can't afford to fight it in court. Here's an example: www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2015/02/24/beer-names-brewers-get-legal-trouble/23971025/I'm not saying I was involved in that case at all, nor am I saying I know anyone who was, There's just this trend with them bullying people into submission because they seem to think they're going to be the next Boston Brewing Company or something. And maybe they will be, but c'mon, was anyone going into a beer store going to confuse those two names as being from the same place? Sorry, that has nothing to do with you buying a bottle and having a presumably pretty good tasting beer. Just a sore spot for me is all. I should be less reactive.

I like some fruit beers, too, but I've yet to have a fruit IPA I liked at all. And since IPAs are my bag, the rampant sweetening and tropical-ing of the style irks me. I follow a few beer reviewers on YouTube, and two years ago, the most common adjectives for new IPAs were things like "resin," "bitter," "dank," "pine" ... you know, the GOOD STUFF. Now the adjectives are always, "citrus," "orange," "juice," "mango" and "tropical."

I'm just curious because they're local to us (20 minute drive) and seem like good people, in general; plus they are a huge reason Chicago has the great beer distribution network they do. But some breweries definitely get very feisty over the appearance of copyright infringement, I know there's at least one brewery in the city that had to change their name alltogether because it was deemed too close to someone else's. And there's a Dutch brewery I love that renamed one of their beers "Cease & Desist" after a fight over the name. (I agree that the German version of Two Brothers wasn't going to confuse anyone walking into a store, but eh.)

Of course, I don't drink many IPAs anyway, but the last one I had was a Ballast Point mango one That said I understand your frustration

The Pineapple Sculpin IPA is amazing, and I don't usually like fruit beers at all. At $15 a six pack, it's out of my usual price range, though.

I'd take the plain ol' Sculpin over either of them, though I do agree the pineapple is not overwhelming. The Sculpin is a great beer, a tentpole really, but I agree that at $15-16 for a six pack it's just too expensive. There are plenty of IPAs I like more landing in the $9-13 range.
