'To recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less.' - Oscar Wilde Could we maybe have this faxed to Tory central office, or maybe projected on to the side of the House Of Commons?

Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.
Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

You people believe in what you have. The rich believe in money, the intelligent believe in intelligence, the powerful believe in power, the Army believes in strength, the Church believes in morality. But you really mustn't expect that to apply to everyone. You really shouldn't expect the oppressed to believe in misery and the starving to believe in hunger.

As a British Asian of the same generation, intense feelings overwhelm me when I see Rishi Sunak cross the door into 10 Downing Street. All that envy and bitterness will pass, though.

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers’ hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say—
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."
-- William McGonnagal, the worst poet in English history; today is the 143d anniversary of the Tay Bridge disaster*

William McGonnagal, as you may gather from his name, is Scottish and therefore not the worst poet in English history. Important distinction! Interesting minor piece of history. The most famous bridge in Scotland is, of course, the Forth Bridge (this one, or as I like to call it, "the view from my balcony") This bridge is massively over-engineered, one result of which is it's distinctive diamond-shape construction. The reason for the over-engineering was... to avoid another Tay Bridge disaster, as captured in the truly terrible poem by one William McGonnagal.
