I just bought Star Wars outer rim, looking forward to trying it.
Look forward to your thoughts on that one. Was looking at it as a solo game a few months back.

My family is the best! Today, because they were worried that I would feel left out because I let them get two bearded dragons for pets this weekend, Mrs B stopped at the hobby shop and talked with my friend who's the manager there. She ended up getting me the brand-new Warhammer 40,000 box that was released today, Indomitus. The only "catch" was they only had the store display copy left over, so I got it with all of the miniatures assembled already. My friend was worried that this would be a down-side for me, so he made sure to tell Mrs B that if I DON'T like it, I can bring it back to the store and exchange it for store credit. I am totally not. I know the people who work at the store do a good job assembling stuff - I've helped them before just for fun - so I am ridiculously pleased about this. At most I might need to touch up a couple of spots. But I won't start painting these until my commissions are finished also. She also got me " Illuminor Szeras", a Necron leader with one of the coolest miniatures I've seen in a long time. I mean holy shit, click on the link to his page...he's AMAZING!

Anyone have a suggestion for a new (ideally not mega expensive) game I could grab to play with my parents at a cabin? I've got them playing Ticket to Ride semi regularly but that's about the limit of their 'strategic thinking' re: board games.
I keep watching the local used postings in hope of something interesting coming up but everyone seems to only be selling/trading their uber complex games and people are asking ridiculously close to retail prices anyway where I'd probably just go buy a new copy in any case.

If I've been away from this thread it's only because I'm on bga almost every day of the week, usually for Carcassone or Jaipur.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier! If it's not too late, I'd recommend Quest for El Dorado! Miniature Market is selling it for $25 or so. It can be strategic if you want it to be, but it doesn't require it to be fun. It's got a very classic board-game-y kinda feel, so it might appeal to non-gamers. It's imminently replayable because of the modular board. It's the game my non-strategic-thinking mother requests most often.

BGirl and I played The Island of Misfit Friends a few days ago.
It's like a match-3 candy game but with little troll-like guys trying to be first to escape an island ruled by their angry king. It was not very fun and I had to throw the game to avoid her usual "I didn't win" meltdown, so yeah, not rushing to play this one again.

No, sadly we're back. I'll keep an eye out for it though thanks.
In the end I got them playing a few rounds of Carcassonne to round things out a bit which wasn't bad, i've been playing it exclusively online for so long I forgot I don't have the river expansion in physical form.

We played The Pyramid of Pengqueen today, first with me and BGirl, and then a second game with Mrs B joining us. It was very easy to learn and a lot of fun! Treasure hunters race to find specific treasures on the board, while the Mummy chases them. The center board is vertical and the pieces are magnetic. The treasure hunters can see where they are and the Mummy, but the Mummy only sees themselves, and the only way to know where the players are is by what treasures they pick up! Definitely a recommended fun family game. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36648/pyramid-pengqueen

I gotta say, I'm totally new to tabletop RPGs and things of that nature and they've always intimidated me, but my wife, my partner, and I got together Saturday to do a game of Lasers & Feelings over Discord voice chat w/ my partner's other two (long-distance) partners, and it was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had, and now I want to write fan fiction about the characters we created and the relationships between them we established.
My first time, and I'm now wishing I dipped a toe into this world ages ago.

If you have a good group and a game you’re all into the possibilities are pretty much endless and with the technology we’ve all got on our phones it’s way easier to play in these our modern times than it ever was before (though I do miss actually sitting around a table throwing dice and doing goofy voices with my friends).

There is a new Princess Bride Game with 7 character minis (Westley, Buttercup, Inigo, Fezzik, Vizzini, Prince Humperdinck, and Count Rugen) available at Target for $30. It is my new goal in life to buy this, paint the minis and resell it. www.target.com/p/the-princess-bride-game/-/A-79396330

Also why is there not a Fred Savage in a Bed figure?

Speaking of likenesses, I grabbed a copy of the game today and wasted no time starting on these: After some touchups including shaving some of the more obvious moldlines and using hot water to straighten the swords and re-bend some of them into the right positions, I put on a primer coat. Especially with the primer on, you can really see just how brilliant these likenesses are. (Here's a link to the full-size photo to show more detail. I am very impressed with these: i.imgur.com/TstFcwS.jpg ) Each base also has the character's name engraved on it. I can't wait to paint them up, and hope I do the characters justice!

God, I'm getting sick of my group's monthly Jackbox games. We're supposed to be playing Among Us this month, though, so I'm glad that we're finally doing something else.
I'm kind of tempted by Tabletopia, though. They seem to have a lot of games, including Scythe, which was intrigued me for a while. Anyone ever tried it? How's the platform? Almost decent or what?

I haven't tried tabletopia, I still don't get how some of these places exist heh.

Was working full time on a local campaign from July through the election so I haven't played, read, or done anything game related in months. Glad to be getting back into things.
Finally got around to finishing the final two months of Pandemic Legacy S1. That was a fun trip even with a long hiatus in the middle.
My copy of Altar Quest arrived the week after the election. This is my first Big Box of Miniatures game. Also my first tactical dungeon crawler type game. It took a bit to get into because the manual is a wall of text but after some time in the BGG forums I think I have it managed. Probably too fiddly for Mrs. Weasel, but so far a nice solo experience.
And of course my first day working through the backlog of review & preview videos on YouTube lead me to a new project I fell in love with. Canadian dude, first time designer, Euro with nifty mechanics called The Transcontinental about the building of Canada's first transcontinental railroad.
Can't wait to see your finished Princess Bride minis, AB.

I want to get a game for my friends and their soon to be six year old daughter. She plays the hell out of Uno and other card and basic board games. Wanted to get something that she would like and that the parents wouldn't get too burned out on. Any suggestions?

My in-laws are big fans of Uno special decks, but we can't meet up because of pandemic plus international separation. So we've been playing Solo on Board Game Arena (and of course it's a physical game too). Solo seems to be the German version of Uno and I actually like it better - same gameplay and special cards but with two card types that allow players to exchange hands. One is a colored card that allows the player to exchange with their opponent of choice, the other is a wild card the makes all players rotate their hands in the direction of play. You can also play a matching card out of turn and stack draw cards. All much more exciting.

I have zero experience with gaming with small children, but according to the publisher, Ticket To Ride Junior is appropriate for 6 and up. Also maybe Tsuro? The publisher says 8+ for that, but if you kinda houserule it a bit, it's just making a maze so maybe a sharp 6-year-old could follow along? My Little Scythe also says 8+ but maybe that's doable? (I say, not having played Scythe or having dealt with any 6 year olds in ages...)

I own a five year old and some of the non-Candy Land/Chutes & Ladders games we've played with her are Dobble (apparently called Spot It! in the US), Rasselbande (apparently called "The Piggy Brigade" in English speaking countries), and Halli Galli. We've also got a game called Pig Mania! where you throw toy pigs like dice and earn points based on how they land that she really likes but that was something I had when I was a child so I've got no idea if it's something that's still in print or not.

I second the vote for Dobble/Spot It! It's shockingly good fun even for adults. I have a set that I keep at the Reference desk here at the library and I've managed to get kids and adults to stop what they're doing and play at the drop of a hat. It's that easy to teach, set-up, and play. And there are interesting enough variations for how to play that adults can enjoy it, too.

Easy enough for kids that age to play, but still unique enough to make it fun for the adults.

I learned to play Pass the Pigs while doing tactical field training with some Rangers and other 'high-speed' types. They had a house rule where anyone could jump on any pigs that rolled off of the gaming surface and steal whatever points the roller had accumulated, which added a lot of entertainment value to the game.
