I'm so sorry, Baron von Costume ! You definitely need to buy new games, though, so you're ready when you get a new group going! Speaking of buying games, my boss at the library has gotten permission from the powers that be to build an in-house-use tabletop game collection, which would be super-exciting only she put one of my co-workers -- someone who doesn't game at all -- in charge of figuring out what to buy. WTF?! sixteen monopoly sets it is! It's funny because it's true.

We started our game of Traveler (T20) last night. Typical underhanded and criminal goings-on for this GM. Escorting a courier who is ferrying cold cred credits to drug dealers. Only it turns out the courier actually had a bomb in his case (unbeknownst to him) and it was an assassin job, and before the bomb even went off, the local military guard were on us. Simple job turned into a flight for our lives through the city back to our ship, which is on lock-down.
I ran into the problem I usually have in sci-fi games: underoptimizing my character. I made a fast-talking, diplomatic pilot kind of character who could hold his own in a firefight. I didn't take the appropriate tech-y skills I thought I had, to hotwire a car or the like. Almost none of my abilities were of any use during the entire evening. So that was less than fun. Going to have to pump some points in some cross-class skills, I guess.

The second session went a good deal better. I had a better handle on the situation and what was expected of my character - I also got to rejigger some skills - and there was also a completely awesome spaceship battle thrown in to the middle of the session. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, we killed a six-pack of Purple Monkey Dishwasher, a peanut butter chocolate stout, while playing.

Our long-running but casual Pathfinder campaign came to an end a few months back when we TPK'd in the final dungeon. It was a module series - Kingmaker, if you're interested - which is fine by me, because our DM is great at running modules. He has an even hand and the depth of rules knowledge needed to run a good game, as long as someone else is providing the flavor. After the campaign's conclusion, he wanted to run a campaign of his own design. Not the first of his I've played at all, but as usual it's bumming me out.
He has this terrible tendency to create impossible role playing situations where there's obviously a mystery at hand, but no one knows anything. Every conversation is a dead end. No one is inherently shady. There are no leads. We just bumble around the whole 3-hour session grasping at straws until finally the path forward is revealed through some deus ex machina. All the while getting itchier and itchier for combat that doesn't happen.
I'll stick with it for now - I like the group, and again it's very casual so we mostly shoot the shit anyway - but honestly I think I'll be glad when the birth of my son in a couple months more or less forces my resignation from regular play.

Seems like I'm back to usual with the local store's game day with it back to falling on a day that I have 2 previous booked events.
Frustrating as now more than ever I'd like to force myself to go down and see if I can stumble across some new gaming friends.

Frustrating as now more than ever I'd like to force myself to go down and see if I can stumble across some new gaming friends. That got a sympathy like from me. I wish you best of luck with this! I've been circling around getting a regular lunchtime gaming group going at work. Today we played Flip City but didn't get a chance to finish. I've been worried these other folks are just humoring me, but when I suggested we save our decks and pick up again tomorrow, it got a very enthusiastic response. Hooray! In other news, A Feast for Odin. Will I ever have time to play a whole game of it? Unlikely! Will my mom, who's my gaming buddy for this kind of game, pick up the strategies enough to make it fun for me to play? Probably not! Do I have a place to store another big box game? Heavens no! Did I buy it anyway? Yes! Unfortunately, I bought it through Cool Stuff Inc, along with a pre-order of a Mysterium expansion set, forgetting that CSI doesn't send any of the order until the pre-order comes in. I probably won't get a chance to have enough time to even play a decently-partial game of it until Christmas vacation, but I'm getting flop sweats over the fact that I ordered it weeks ago but won't get it until the end of October at the earliest.

I went to a game night last Friday that was a good time. All pretty established games like Settlers an Blokus, but we also did something new to me: Splendor. It's sort of like deck-building, but more like portfolio building. You use money to buy cards that give you more money to buy cards with victory points. The trick is that you can also speculate, reserving cards for only yourself even if you don't have the cash yet. We got it down to a science quickly, identifying cards with maximum buying power relative to their own cost.

There's also a new expansion for it, which is supposed to be pretty good.

My wife and I tried out a couple of new-to-us board games tonight--Machi Koro and King of Tokyo. Machi Koro was entertaining--pretty Catan-ish but card based and easy to learn. King of Tokyo, on the other hand...seems like what one of those games that's possible to play with two players but really shouldn't be. The vaguely yahtzee-based mechanics are intriguing, though, and I imagine it would be a lot of chaotic fun with a larger group. We also tried out Forbidden Island with some friends a couple of weeks ago, which plays like Pandemic but more chill, and a couple of orders of magnitude less complicated. We're not sure about he replay value, though.

I've played Machi Koro a few times and quite liked it but it definitely seems like something that would get old fast playing with a bunch of experienced board game folks. (I like the art though and keep meaning to pick it up)

I had a game night last Friday, a little constrained by having five players instead of four or six. We played the European map of Ticket to Ride, then Wordsters, then some more For Sale. So one building/strategy/chance game, one creative writing game, and one economics/chance game. It was pretty funny how the different players had their brains bent by the very different games. The biggest contemporary game guy at the table could barely wrap his head around the simplistic words game.

Game night tonight... played Notre Dame for the first time. Quite enjoyed it though I would vastly change my strategy for another go.
Then some guillotine and king of tokyo to finish off the night. Good fun, wish we could do it more often.

I finally got to try Feast For Odin! It's so, so, so, so good. It takes so freaking long to set up and take down, though. I need a Feast For Odin room in my house where I can just leave all the bits and bobs out without fear of the cats absconding with all my precious wood, stone, animal pelts, and plundered silver.

Maybe in the next couple months. But overall I think I preferred Risk Legacy to Pandemic. ETA: Aw yeah. 100 posts. Cocaine room, here I come!

We played Bohnanza after dinner at our friends' place Saturday, and it was pretty great. It took me back to my college days of playing Catan without knowing the right rules, when we traded willy-nilly. I like economics games.

There's a group of tabletop people at work, and we end up playing most days. Recently it's been a lot of Carcassonne which is a very heated game of medieval French land politics! I swear it's more fun than it sounds. We have an expansion for it that includes a dragon, which makes everything better, right?

We all have to make sure to say good game after because we spend all the time playing saying things like "You've made an enemy for life right here".

Has anyone played First Martians? It looked like something totally up my alley and it has a campaign mode too... no idea if I'd ever get anyone to play it with me though.
Had a game day put on by local store last weekend. Friend who was supposed to go with me ditched me last minute but I went down and played a few things anyway, mostly casual sillyness but read the rules on a couple more complex games too (hence the question above)

Baron von Costume -- I haven't played First Martians but was really high on the concepts behind it, until I watched the review from my go-to tabletop reviewers, Shut Up & Sit Down. Their critique convinced me I wasn't likely to get my gaming group excited enough to play it enough to justify the cost. The concept sounds so good, though! And I think Dice Tower (the other review source I sometimes look at) liked it.

Yeah, I think I could get one group of people into it, but they're the ones that managing to get a day scheduled is like pulling teeth so the campaign would never happen. (We've just rescheduled our game night for the second week in a row and I'm guessing it'll be 3 come thursday.) I want to play it though, if I get a gift cert for my local shop for xmas I may end up picking it up.

It's currently on sale at Amazon Prime for $40 which seems to be lower than I've seen it anywhere else.

Serious question: Is $75 for a copy of HeroQuest a good buy or nah? I never played it as a kid so try to avoid nostalgia-based answers. Price wise seems decent/low based on ones I've seen for sale. As to the game itself I have no idea. I just bought myself a used copy of Machi Koro + two expansions from a local game facebook group. Finally opened it to play last night and all the coins are missing so we just played with my parents' change jar. Hopefully the guy has them somewhere but he charged me a low enough price for the otherwise pristine collection that it wouldn't be the end of the world if I have to buy/make some random tokens

I got Carcassone for Christmas and it hits my board game sweet spot of "actually requires some strategy and engagement" and "doesn't require a flippin' hour to just explain the basic gameplay to somebody". Even my dad, who can get a little frustrated keeping track of rules for new games, picked it up quickly the first time we played.
I'm curious, are the expansions really worth it? Do they add a level of complexity that is going to require a group of only experienced players to be worthwhile?

Do they add a level of complexity that is going to require a group of only experienced players to be worthwhile? The crew that I (sadly, very rarely) play with worships at the altar of more, so they always want to play with every expansion available, but I like Carcassone's base game the best. The expansions do add layers of complexity, more things to think about every turn, new objectives, but one of the great things about Carcassone is just what you said: there's strategy, but it's zen simple to get into and understand. I'm not saying don't try the expansions, but if you're concerned about losing your audience, you might be happier just where you are. Caveat: I like Carcassone, but it's not a favorite. There's nothing flawed in the design, but for me it takes too damn long to play.

I managed to get First Martians on sale via amazon usa hooray. Now for me to never get the chance to play it due to people backing out on game night.
My used copy of machi koro was missing the coin tokens, thankfully the guy who sold it to me found them immediately when I reached out to him.
