It follows her at walking pace? How many years could she buy by just going to the other side of the country? Or as the guy says, just hurry up and have sex with somebody? Also I'm glad this is technically a 2014 film or I'd have to take issue with the whole "best movie of 2015" statement. I think the idea is that it just turns up anywhere she is, at random, without there being any set time for doing so. There's a quite a while before it comes for the neighbour boy, whereas it came for her the same night she was cursed. So if she flew to Japan, it could turn up the next day, or within an hour, or ... And having sex with somebody wouldn't really solve it. Once it kills them, it comes back for her. A long chain of people being told the nature of the curse and that they have to pass it onwould work, and then eventually every single person on earth would be banged to death by something that looks like their mother. There are worse ways to go out, I suppose. I think it's the best movie I've seen this year, though it's not flawless.

Also I'm glad this is technically a 2014 film or I'd have to take issue with the whole "best movie of 2015" statement. It's slow, but not stupid. It's speculated that all it needs to do is shuffle aboard a plane, train or automobile going in that direction. And about the sex: She does have sex with someone! Multiple someones! She swims to a fuckin' boat and has sex with strangers! It doesn't work very well. And Dellarigg, wasn't it implied that the neighbor boy she banged probably banged some girl at school? That's why it took so long to come for him? So basically, two people died before it got back to her? Yeah, just having sex isn't enough.

The fact it shows up seemingly at random, given how it varies in how long it takes to reach its victim, to be the perfect unsettling touch. There is no set logic to exactly how the curse/creature works, beyond the fact it follows people after they've had sex. It's a bold move on the part of the writer to leave some of those aspects deliberately obscure; it makes it feel all the more like a nightmare come to life. One thing I would be curious about is if there are multiple versions of the curse out there. Like if one cursed person had group sex, would everyone in the group get it? It would certainly add to an urban legend vibe.

Then if that person immediately had sex with another one in the group, and so on, 'It' would have to just keep changing direction ever so slightly. Frankly, I don't see this working in a horror film.

An interesting point. You're correct that if its transmission is through the orgasm itself, the person who got the load (or, if they were lesbians, other bodily fluids) would likely be just one individual, so a three or more sexual encounter probably wouldn't make too much of a difference, other than adding a potential uncertainty as to who is cursed. Still, it would be pretty funny if group sex turned out to multiply the curse.

I just solved it.
Necrophilia.
It spends eternity trying to kill someone who's already dead! Sorted.

Finally saw this last night. Really enjoyed it. I really liked how It could be seen by anyone who'd been its target, but even unaffected people could fight it or be attacked by it, though it always went straight back to pursuing its current target after the distraction was removed.
The whole idea of it appearing as relatives, living or dead, was pretty damn scary to me. The first old woman that appeared to Jay was admittedly a bit silly, but she reminded me JUST enough of my most beloved great-grandmother to really give me the creeps.
My friend who loaned me the Blu-Ray also pointed out that the naked man on the roof near the end was Jay's grandfather.

I'm considering watching this with my wife for our annual scary movie night Friday or Saturday. I have some questions though, and forgive me if it's been discussed here but I didn't want to get SPOILERd.
How gory is it? Is it mostly scares or is it graphic, too? Since having kids, my wife really can't handle any kind of child (not teenager) endangerment. So, unfortunately we won't be watching Babadook any time soon. But is there child threatening/violence?

Very little gore, no children in danger, so you should be safe.

"Wait does this have dead children in it?" --My wife, the second this queued up. So, after asking about it right before halloween, we finally did see this last night. I loved about 3/4ths of it. Like Post-Lupin though the ending didn't quite sit well with me. I really didn't like the pool scene: it seemed like a Scooby Doo ep at that point. Plus it kept violating its own rules (being able to touch her and all). And the exact ending didn't follow for me on initial vieiwing, though I like the shading y'all gave it in its defense. Anyways. Great atmosphere, writing, concept, characters, etc., just didn't quite stick to the landing for me. But I'm interested to see what's next for this director.

I finally saw it. I liked it. For me it is more a psychological thriller and art film than a horror movie. That one scene in the house when It takes the form of that super tall dude who creeps up behind Dara gave me a jolt (even though that exact scare was in the trailer), but overall I didn't find this to be a very scary movie. Definitely more in the "unsettling" camp.
I like the ambiguous nature of It. It doesn't really conform to an established rule set. It's incredibly strong and dangerous, but It doesn't attack anyone but It's mark unless It has to. It's invincible, but it bleeds or can be staggered. It's like an apparition, but it can't walk through walls. Trying to discover the "rules" along with the heroes up until the end was a big part of the fun, and even if, as has been said above, getting to the final confrontation was a leap, the confrontation itself was so exciting because of that sense of discovery.
Babadook was scarier, though I found the look of this movie more captivating, and ultimately I prefer It Follows. I compare them only because they're the two "it" horror movies of the past couple years.
In terms of sheer terror, neither movie hits me like either The Exorcist or The Ring did.

I don't watch horror movies. I do watch psychological thrillers.
I don't see where it was inconsistent. The only pre-set "rules" came from one kid who had to learn them on his own, because he didn't know how he caught it. At best he had gotten some other girls killed in the process, but we don't know that.
Thanks to everyone in the thread who pointed out when It took the appearance of relatives. I heard Patient 0 say that, but I didn't pick out the faces.
I liked it.
