Completed Final Fantasy 8 with the kids last night.
Through the power of Card Mod and the ridiculously breakable junction system, the game was pretty much a stroll. Killed every enemy and boss just by spamming attack. At least up until Ultimecia, who wasn't hard exactly, but I kept getting cocky and letting my whole party's health get too low, thinking one more Renzokuken would do the trick .... then she'd wipe me.
So it took four tries, but we finally put her down. Still love that final movie.
I cannot imagine playing any of these games again without the high-speed mode that comes packed in these rerelease versions. It makes such a difference.
Final Fantasy 9 next.

Reached the point of Ghost of Tsushima where I've already picked up the best armor in the game (for my playstyle, at least), I've fully upgraded my weapons, and my stats are such that surviving any given encounter is a breeze. I.e., the point at which I rapidly lose interest in a game unless the story is compelling enough to see me through to the end. Fortunately the story is compelling...but also relentlessly bleak. We'll see.

I forgot how great Pathfinder games are, but I'm loving Wrath of the Righteous.

God, I'm losing a lot in online Tekken 7. It's especially galling that the video for the "Fight online in 10 matches" trophy is a slo-mo capture of me getting my ass kicked. I guess years-old muscle memory and one month of playing isn't enough to hold your own even at the beginner levels.

We'll see. I feel like I'm already at the same point after just finishing Act 1. Only one armor set fully upgraded (samurai) but I have so many seemingly OP moves and weapons at this point I can't imagine dying outside of maybe a duel. I'm liking the story a lot though so far. Was genuinely upset about the thing that happens at the castle. And so many dopamine triggers that I'm sure will get old eventually but I'm loving for now. As an Uncharted fan I love the shrine climbs the most.

I'm really worried I'm not gonna like it. I think it will be really fun to play - and I WILL be playing it day one - but I'm not sure even Souls can get me to stick with an open world game these days. Every time he opens the map I feel anxious. My favorite way to play Souls games is what you might call "all bosses and items." Kill every boss and collect every visible thing. If it's glowing, beckoning to be picked up, I have to get it whether I need it or not. My dex-based halberd fighter will absolutely be collecting every sorcery, miracle, and pyromancy ring he can get his hands on, with no intention of casting anything at all.
In an open world game, that's such a overwhelming thought.
I love so much about what's presented here, though. The weird monster designs, the painting mechanic he shows off near the end, the fuckin' horse.

Wrapped up Ghost of Tsushima, aside from the expansion content. I had a grand old time--beautiful setting, satisfying combat, compelling story. Could have used more enemy variety, and clearing camps grew fairly rote by the end, but that's kind of on me for being such a completionist. I'm a little surprised at the (relatively) tepid critical response, which boiled down to "it's a very well made open world game, but it never tries to be more than an open world game." Fair enough, I guess, but it smacks of critic novelty bias--"his new stuff sounds just like his old stuff! Why doesn't he write music that doesn't sound like his music?!" The Besties, in particular, kind of savaged it, and were a big reason why I waited so long to pick it up.
Speaking of...I might need to take a break from Besties for a while. Between MBMBAM and Besties I'm getting thoroughly sick of Justin McElroy's schtick. I haven't listened to their most recent episode yet on the new Pokemon game, but I already know that Justin is going to sigh and bitch and moan and say as little as possible after proudly announcing that he couldn't get past the first five minutes. It should be noted that I have very little interest in playing the new Pokemon game, but I still enjoy listening to engaged commentary and criticism, neither of which Justin seems interested in providing anymore. Maybe he should just bow out and start a little segment on obscure 90s FMV games or whatever the fuck he still cares about on his boring cereal podcast. Chris Plante can drop by from time to time to talk about NieR: Automata ad nauseam while Justin takes a nap.

It was released in a time where open world games are among the dominant genres for big budget games and it did fit the Ubisoft model

If I remember correctly the Besties also reviewed it before it got updated and some issues were fixed - mostly cosmetic things though. I also don't think they played a lot of it because I also had a good experience with it. I think it boils down to open world fatigue.
I also enjoyed the Ghost of Tsushima's story and some bits of the side quests, like the Yuriko line (the elderly caretaker). It starts as a somewhat boring fetch quest to get some new weapons but the end kind of moved me.
The Iki island expansion add some variety to the enemies and some cool new cosmetics and legendary items but ultimately it's more of the same. I wouldn't recommend jumping right on it after finishing the main game but I could see it being a nice way to get back into after a few months for a quick enjoyable experience.

What if the reason Silksong is taking so long is negative feedback from final build play testers who, while acknowledging the excellent gameplay as a thoughtful and innovative evolution of the core Hollow Knight feel, just couldn't get over the sharp change in direction for the lore, such as primary antagonist "Dr. Bonepenis" and the renaming of the trailer's favorite baddie, Lace, to "Lace, the Cum Queen?" This devastating feedback sent the production into a tailspin.

TIL that the name of the world of the Dragon Age games, Thedas, literally stands for "THE Dragon Age Setting".

Finally beat God of War (2018). 32.8 hours played.
It's a masterpiece. No qualifiers. It's one of the best games I've ever played.

I finally started playing it last weekend - actually got it with bundled with the PS4 a few years back but haven't quite been in the mood until now. And I am loving it - I like how every couple hours of gameplay Atreus is sad and Kratos reaches out to him before pulling his hand back and being all emo. It could only be more "Toxic Masculinity, The Game" if all the enemies had gone out with Kratos' ex at some point. Also have to say that the animation of the leviathan axe return is deeply satisfying. Real sense of weight

Nobody Saves the World is a really fun top-down Zelda-ish action game from the makers of Guacamelee.
You play a dude who gets a magic wand that allows him to shapeshift into a bunch of different forms, each with its own attacks, abilities, and stats. It starts out simply enough: a few basic forms, overworld, dungeons, etc., but then oh boy the mechanics start to stack up.
Its best idea is its leveling system, or rather systems. You have your typical stat level with XP gained from completing quests and story objectives. And then you have your form levels. Rather than tying form progression to any one action that can be grinded out, like killing enemies, you progress your forms by completing mini-quests unique to that form. Kill a certain number of enemies with the main attack, hit 5 enemies at once with the special attack, use your passive heal ability to restore over 2000hp, and so on. As you complete these objectives, your form levels up, gains new abilities, opens new slots to further customize the form, and initiates more quests to keep play fresh. You're directly rewarded for using the whole of your character, and indeed you have to in order to succeed.
Eventually you unlock the real meat of the form system, which is the ability to borrow abilities among your forms. Each form has a set main attack and passive ability that cannot be changed, but beyond that it's fair game. Eventually every form can equip up to 3 passive and 3 active abilities from other forms. So you're standard melee knight character could unleash the ranger's barrage of arrows, run as fast as the horse, and infect creatures with the zombie bite. Later game form progression even requires this, as most of the higher tier form quests specifically require combinations of abilities to trigger. Of course I did settle into favorites as I went along, core elements of a build I'd apply to any form as needed, but I did enjoy constantly switching out the forms so I could always be leveling something as I played through.
And of course, it's from the Guacamelee people, so it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's got a good cartoony art style, plenty of humor, and lots of creativity in the forms. You've got your standard Knight, Ranger, Monk, but you've also got a turtle, a horse, a zombie, a robot, a stage magician, a mermaid, a ghost, a dragon, and literally just an egg that rolls around.
Perhaps one of the most surprising things about the game, especially once you see it, is that it is NOT a rogue-like. It's easy to see how it could have been one, this same system could definitely be used to build one, but it's not. This is a Zelda-ish open map action-adventure game. It has a story, and it has a definite end.
High recommendation.

some extremely early HFW observations.
- coming to this from tsushima is a bad idea. the controls feel way stiffer and it's just less fun to move around. maybe play some RDR 2 first.
- aloy won't shut up. the VO alerted me that i was in an area with enemies way before the visuals did. not good.
- you can stealth kill the early enemies from METERS away while you're still in cover. kind of an immersion killer.

I'm 90% certain that's Daisy Ridley, who has apparently been in a relationship with her Murder on the Orient Express co-star Tom Bateman since 2017. So, no.

I haven't had the chance to be the Nintendo fanboy around in here in a while, so: Elden Ring looks hard and scary and the game I'm most looking forward to in the sort term is Triangle Strategy.
