While it isn't the Muppets, the cast list for Rian Johnson's next Benoit Blanc movie is getting announced this week and it looks really good so far.
Josh O'Connor Cailee Spaeny Andrew Scott Kerry Washington Glenn Close
Hoping we see at least a couple more names announced this week. Johnson said on Twitter this week that it is about to go into production.

I really enjoyed Simu Liu's take in the Barbie movie, but I wish we'd gotten Manny Jacinto in that role. He just does "himbo" so beautifully.

Once the kid starting sleeping on a regular schedule and we were finally able to claw some time back for ourselves C and I decided to start up a weekly movie night. What started as a casual effort to catch up on some of the movies we missed in the past couple of years has rapidly become something of a household institution. The rules as they currently stand: 1) the movie has to be new to at least one of us (and unofficially the other party has only seen it once or in pieces across multiple cable viewings, etc.); 2) the movie must be selected from The List (a Google doc we keep of films we've always been meaning to see); 3) The List can be freely added to but cannot exceed 100 movies (no danger of that so far; we're currently sitting at 90); and 4) each week, one of us provides a selection of three movies from which the other picks one (trading off week-to-week). Thus far, the three movies have often been vaguely thematically related (last movie night was sequels), but that's not an official requirement. Naturally, we've been keeping record of the selections on yet another Google doc. We, uh, are kind of obsessed with these movie nights. We look forward to these so much. It's just...it's just been so long...babies are a lot...adult time, so rare, so precious.

And now Jeremy Renner is announced in Rian Johnson's next Benoit Blanc film. Ooh, I am so happy to see him back working. That accident he had sounded horrible.

Bad Boys: Ride or Why?!? Obviously, execs or some other decision makers believe there's some appetite for this and the Lethal Weapon sequel, but I don't want to meet the people who are excited about seeing this. Maybe they'll make a Running Scared sequel, while they're at it.
ETA: Holy f*ck, I forgot they had a threequel in 2020, Bad Boys for Life. They should have saved that title so they could Bad Boys 4 Lyfe this one.

Movie Night #10 is in the books:
6/2/2024 8 1/2 (1963) Playtime (1967) The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967)
C's choice was initially Playtime, but alas, it doesn't seem to be available anywhere on streaming (aside from on Youtube with Spanish subtitles) and we didn't want to wait to torrent it.
Coming up:
6/9/2024 Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (2023) The Half of It (2020) Little Women (2019)

A local indie cinema specializing in oddities is showing Motorama (1991), a movie that haunted me as a child when I saw on VHS. I remember it quite well--a dreamlike, Lynchian thing about a runaway kid with a car obsessed with winning one of those corporate contests to find all the letters in MOTORAMA. Though I definitely didn't realize the insane cast at the time. Scripted by After Hours writer Joseph Minion.

They're making a movie of Suzanna Clarke's Piranesi, and it's going to be stop-motion, says The Hollywood Reporter.

They're making a movie of Suzanna Clarke's Piranesi, and it's going to be stop-motion, says The Hollywood Reporter. Random fact: Laika Studios CEO Travis Knight is the son of former Nike head Phil Knight and he once released a hilariously awful rap album as Chilly Tee. You could accuse him of being a nepotism baby but he did make the legitimately excellent Kubo and the Two Strings.

Dee Dee gave us one of Rabin's better World of Flops columns, so there's that.

Being a nepo baby doesn't mean you're talentless, it just means you had an easier road to success than people without the same advantages. It's the reason why you see so many actors from rich families that have nothing to do with entertainment: they don't have to worry about making rent and can keep trying until they make it.

I didn't mean to imply people from well-off families can't be talented.

Turns out my dad wrote a review of the Sutherland-starring Casanova for the Marquette University student paper back in 1976. I did not realize writing little amateur reviews ran in the family.

I think I read somewhere, in some review at the time, that Sutherland had his teeth filed down for that role. I wouldn't care if I was working for Fellini, or how how much money they might be paying me, nobody is gonna be filing my teeth down for no goddam job.

As a huge fan of Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia, how did I never know that Warren Oates recreated it for an early-'80s Japanese commercial?

My dad has Lewy Body Dementia but one of the things really sticking with him are all these characters actors throughout history and theirs roles—I guess I really was born for this.

That's really interesting. My mother used to run Alzheimer's Association's programs for much of her region and I know Lewy was always a difficult one to crack for them. I'd like to hear if you have any insight on what you're doing, either here or the DMs.

I'm coming around to believe that this is actually the best Bob Fosse choreography put on film. This is a tough choice, but there is perfection in the way the movement matches the lyrics, story and characters here that perhaps exceeds anything else he did.

TIL that Framed updates at midnight local to wherever you are, so when I send my sister a link saying 'you can probably get this in one', she's probably seeing what was yesterday's movie for me. She was very confused when (spoilers for anyone who hasn't looked at the site in the past week) I sent her what I thought was Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and she was getting clues for the Blue Lagoon.

I have a love/hate relationship with film discussion nowadays. I feel like so often this is how it goes:
Before a film is released the chatter is about how it’s the most amazing movie ever, a masterpiece. Lots of hype.
When it’s first released you start to hear the people angry that it didn’t live up to the (frankly impossible) hype. The backlash starts immediately upon release and people who don’t like it take the tone that everyone who does is wrong.
Within a couple weeks the general tone is that it’s mid or problematic. Then the next film gets hyped up and the previous one has to be horrible in comparison because everything has to be a competition, everything is mid, and joy isn’t allowed.

I was looking through the movies listed on CinemaBox again last night and was surprised at how many were Criterion Collection releases. I am once again amazed by this service and I swear they aren't paying me. If they had closed captions I would be tempted to drop at least one of our paid services. Why does some C list public domain streamer have closed captions for The Terror of Tiny Town, but these guys don't have captions for Paths of Glory?
