This is the most bullshit of noms ive seen in a while. Not so much about hateful eight though, I realized about a week ago it likely wasn't going to hit big at Oscars because the film is way too "edgy" for the old voters.
Sicario, creed, ridley Scott, all got hosed though. The martian had the third most noms but couldn't get one for directing, the fuck is that bullshit? Like I know argo won BP without affleck getting a nom, but it still seems bullshit the Oscars will snub him despite that. The martian was a great film and Scott's directing was the best thing about it. And I don't even like ridley Scott that much.
Seriously, no benecio del toro? Did they even watch films this year? Jennifer Lawrence again? No Charlize Theron? No Michael b Jordan? I think that answers my question.
So glad I'm going to be in basic training for when this bullshit happens. My guess is big short or spotlight end up stealing the best picture and or director. Because fuck it.
Also, star wars was not a fucking snub. I'm a HUGE star wars fan. Loved force awakens, but it was not a snub. People want to point at it as a way of snubbing sci-fi and popcorn blockbusters, but we got mad max and the martian this year, so ...... It isn't that.

12 noms for The Revenant and 10(!) for Mad Max, as the two got nominated in every single technical category except Score and Song. They both also missed on Screenplay, which, at least in The Revenant's case, is a bit of a surprise. The reason The Revenant is ahead is because it picked up two acting nominations: the expected Best Actor nod for Leo, and Best Supporting Actor for Tom Hardy, who also starred last year in...Mad Max. Expect his price to jump (we'll just ignore Legend, thank you very much).
The quality of 2015's animated blockbusters was pretty dire, which is why Inside Out is the only one that got a nomination.
Speaking of dire quality, all 5 Best Song nominees pretty much suck. Surely, another song could have been picked so 50 Shades of Gray is not an Oscar nominated film.

Hold your horses, "Simple Song" from Youth is magnificently written and, in the context of the movie, a big artistic payoff. EDIT: Of course, "Simple Song" is classical music, and I'm a classical music guy, so maybe bias at work? But it is truly excellent. The original score for the movie, by David Lang, is definitely the best of the year overall, too.

To be fair, I haven't seen Youth yet (and since, locally, it's now down to one show a day in one theater, probably won't until it comes to DVD or PPV), so I acknowledge that listening to the song via YouTube might not have the impact that hearing it in the context of the film would. I also tend to like songs that are incorporated into the film's narrative rather than simply playing over the closing credits, so I'm willing to give the song another chance. I stand by my stance that the other four songs are awful, though (they didn't even nominate the catchy song from Fifty Shades).

That warmed-over rehash of a score from Star Wars TFA got nominated (did anyone even notice that it was an original score?), but not the Fury Road score. Bullshit.

I did, because the original parts of the Star Wars score are shitty. Kylo Ren's big theme, in particular, started to really annoy me by the 58932th repetition. Along with Carol, that's two genuinely bad score nominees (from good movies). Haven't seen Sicario or Hateful yet. Don't remember the Bridge of Spies music at all.

So how do you all think the OscarsSoWhite controversy will affect the Awards, both this year and in the future?
While I do think that having 20 white nominees for the second year in a row is pretty ridiculous, I'm not sure if any of the snubs individually are really that shameful. Michael B. Jordan and Will Smith were in a very competitive category (and, in Smith's case, his film was largely panned and ignored), Idris Elba's movie was barely seen (at least in the theater), and no one from Straight Outta Compton got enough critical love to attract genuine awards buzz. The biggest problem is that, other than Will Smith or Denzel Washington, very few minority actors get to headline big movies, unless the role they're playing specifically needs to be said minority.

I think the biggest it may have is that if someone's got an Oscar-baitey movie that is looking to cast a race-neutral role, they might have an advantage, if their main focus is awards, in picking a minority actor. Two years of this means there's going to probably be a real push in the next few years to correct, and there will be a bunch of voters trying to prove they aren't racist.

The score from Carol is excellent, and so was Til It Happens To You. What is this nonsense?

PGA: The Big Short SAG: Spotlight DGA: Inarritu
I like the uncertainty this year (although fuck you DGA that was George Miller's award).

PGA: The Big Short SAG: Spotlight DGA: Inarritu I like the uncertainty this year (although fuck you DGA that was George Miller's award). And "The Revenant" got the Golden Globe for Drama (and "The Martian" also got the one for Comedy/Musical, although it has no chance winning in the Oscars.) It's all up in the air. I can't wait for the AVC's take on it a few days before the ceremony.

Cinerama is having a week of showings of Oscar movies! Considering the only ones I've seem are Mad Max and The Martian, this is a godsend. Already have tickets to Room and (shudder) The Revenant, the latter of which I don't feel bad about because it's free.

Well, these are always interesting (if often misguided). This guy doesn't much help himself by voting in categories in which he didn't see all the films, and claiming that "nobody" knows the difference between sound mixing and sound editing. Not to say that all of his reasoning for what he chooses to win is bad, because it's not, but I (naively) hope for better ballots later in the week. First "brutally honest" Oscar ballot.

My predictions: Best Picture: “The Revenant” Best Director: Alejandro Inarritu, “The Revenant” Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant” Best Actress: Brie Larson, “Room” Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, “The Big Short” Best Supporting Actress: Rooney Mara, “Carol” Best Original Screenplay: “Spotlight” Best Adapted Screenplay: “Brooklyn” Best Animated Film: “Inside Out” Best Foreign Film: “Son of Saul” Best Documentary: “Amy” Best Documentary (Short Subject): “Last Day of Freedom” Best Live Action Short Film: “Day One” Best Animated Short Film: “Sanjay’s Super Team” Best Original Score: “The Hateful Eight” Best Original Song: “’Till It Happens To You” from “The Hunting Ground” Best Sound Editing: “Mad Max: Fury Road” Best Sound Mixing: “The Revenant” Best Production Design: “The Martian” Best Cinematography: “The Revenant” Best Makeup & Hairstyling: “Mad Max: Fury Road” Best Costume Design: “The Danish Girl” Best Film Editing: “Spotlight” Best Visual Effects: “Mad Max: Fury Road” I know that a fair share of people would disagree with me picking "Carol" and "Brooklyn" for wins, but I have a hard time thinking the Academy will completely gloss over them, although I absolutely admit there's a decent chance I'll be wrong. With everything else (asides from the shorts), I'm reasonably confident in my choices. Who here has seen the shorts and what do they think of them? Are there any good places to find them? I definitely need to watch more shorts in the upcoming year. Ballot #3. Interesting how each of the 3 voters have chosen different Best Actor picks so far.

Sam Smith (Spectre) won for song instead of David Lang (Youth) so regardless of how many more wins Mad Max cranks out, the theatre needs to be burned down.

I really enjoyed the telecast, honestly. Sure, it was too long, and my DVR cut out right as Morgan Freeman announced the Best Picture winner, but my defense is simply this: I liked it. And the Suge Knight joke slayed me.
I thought for sure Lady Gaga had Best Original Song in the bag (and "Mad Max: Fury Road" losing to "Ex Machina" was a huge surprise). I think she deserved it.

So, Leonardo DiCaprio is from Echo Park, and has said more than once now that he's from "East LA." He's factually wrong on a couple of levels, but the LA Weekly has an article out saying that nobody can claim to be from East LA unless they are working-class Mexican-Americans. You hear that, mom? You and all the Jews and Italians you grew up with are now thieving appropriators!
EDIT: In fairness, literally everyone who has commented on the article, and spread it on my Facebook feed thinks that argument is fucking ridiculous posturing clickbait.

I finally listened to all the Best Song nominees and "Manta Ray" (with Antony of Antony & the Johnson's?) would have been another great winner. But it and "'Till It Happens To You" both deserved to triumph over "Writing's on the Wall".
