God damn, I hate to sound like a broken record here, but this show just cannot land on a tone. You go to commercial break showing us a horrific bomb and people burning alive, then come back to immediate "goofy" music with Mulder and Scully. It really feels like they're trying to do more than six episodes in six episodes - the last two episodes both felt like ideas for two completely different episodes awkwardly grafted together. This one was at least three: 1) Investigate bombing 2) Introducing younger dopplegangers of Mulder and Scully in a goofy episode 3) Mulder's trip and revelations. And they are all three legit good ideas for an episode, but not crammed together like that. At one point my wife said "I can't even concentrate because of the bombing".

There's a part of me that wonders if Carter knew everyone was going to hate the bombing and decided to graft it to the thing he figured everyone would love (the trip) hoping to get a decent episode. But that bombing plot was so badly conceived that it resulted in a bad episode with one good scene, not an okay episode overall.

I'm gonna stand by what I told Zack Handlen on Twitter: this mini-series is Carter's Phantom Menace. He got all the resources in the world to make whatever he wanted, and produced shit that confirmed that all those times we gave him the benefit of the doubt before, we were wrong. His worst instincts were his truest.

I could barely even follow this. Mass pandemic so they rush out to get Mulder and then an alien happens.
Amazon gave Chris Carter and his former collaborator Frank Spotnitz a shot at doing TV shows. They both produced pilots that were popular enough with viewers for some reason to merit a series pickup.
Spotnitz did The Man in the High Castle, Carter did The After; which Amazon quietly dropped after picking it up. Spotnitz's dystopic adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel may have ironed out more of the weirdness than is to my taste, but it's a damn good show overall, and, well, certainly better than what Carter's put out lately. If they could get Spotnitz and/or Gilligan or someone to do some aggressive rewrites on whatever the mythology episodes are in season eleven maybe the exercise would be worthwhile but without it I seriously doubt it.
The abrupt use of Monica Reyes underlines the somewhat haphazard approach to the mythology; on the one hand, overloading us with nonsense exposition and on the other hand never bothering to remind the audience of some things that might actually matter (that Monica used to work in the X-Files like Mulder and Scully has never been mentioned, even in the context of her reappearance) and she was just one more character thrown into a script that had more characters than it had any idea what to do with (Tad O'Malley was, in the end, an exposition device; the doppelgangers were a leftover idea from a previous episode to bat ideas around with more then they had value in themselves.)

At one point, we were watching, and my wife says: "If they say 'vaccines' so help me . . . " And then right after that.
She also made the point that nobody DID anything. It was just talk talk talk. They would say what they would do, then cut to break, then come back, they explained what they did, what happened, and what they were going to do next.
