There's about 2" of snow on the ground and it's supposed to stay below freezing until Tuesday (in single digits at night!). I may have the day off on MOnday.

We got a real snow this weekend, too! It was the most perfect Saturday ever -- not having to go anywhere, big fat snowflakes falling all day, setting up the card table next to the picture window in the living room so we could play Dominion and watch the birds at the feeders in the snow. Ahhh... I'm not getting married to seeing the snow around, though, because it's supposed to be unseasonably warm and rainy later this week. But for now, huzzah for winter!

We were skyping with friends in Vermont on Saturday and the guy was like "it was 9 degrees this morning!" and I said "it was 2 here!" He'd been used to winning that particular misery argument but we won this round That said it's warmer this morning than it was all weekend and is due to be 40ish tomorrow.

I just looked at the forecast (it's definitely going to warm up the next few days) and on Wednesday there's a several rows of what looks like waves, like ~~~~~~~. Are they forecasting a tsunami?!

It's so cold here that my contact lenses legit froze to the insides of my eyelids while I was walking from my car to the commuter train platform. My phone said it was 9 degrees at 6:30 AM, but my car said it was 14. Either way, still way too god damn cold for Maryland. The high is supposed to be 28 today. And my office is so chilly that I'm glad I wore layers and have a good supply of tea and a Snuggie. (Yeah, I have a pink Snuggie in my office. Yeah, I wear it. No, I don't care that it looks stupid. When I'm cold, I'm cold.)
At least tomorrow the high will reach 42, and then it'll be in the 50s for the next few days. I'm willing to put up with some rain if it means not freezing my tits off.

Yow! I never thought about contacts freezing! My hair did freeze a bit on Saturday when I was out brushing snow of my car (I had just washed it.)
And I used to work at a ski resort and I worked in the evenings in the oldest building which was not what you would call insulated. I definitely could have used a snugglie then.

You know what I love about January? How quickly the days get noticeably longer. (Okay, I don't notice it in the mornings, but whatever.) I mean, it's still twilight now at 5:15, when it was full dark by 5 just a few weeks ago! I've been really enjoying seeing the last bits of sunset in the sky during my last few drives home from work, and am eagerly anticipating seeing the sunsets proper not too much longer from now.

The temperature has increased dramatically but it is super-mega windy and very overcast outside. Like it should be storming or something, but minus the rain. 45-50 mph gusts.

I thought the roads would be clear today (snow happened over Friday night and Saturday morning) but no. Our school was closed again today but I thought I'd go in for a few hours (I only live 5 mins. away) and realized that while the main roads were clear, the road our school is on, being a side road and very shady, had large sections that were still pure ice. So I went home. The sun has been shining all afternoon and hopefully the road will be clear tomorrow morning.

We got sleety ice overnight. It's the kind of stuff that looks like snow from out the window and then you go outside and realize it's tiny ice pellets. Soo... I'm working from home today. There was no sense in trying to navigate the roads (although the way the storm went, it was probably not as bad up by my work, but it's bad enough down here...)
Oh, and we had thunder!freezingrain last night. Complete with lightning.

Yesterday, I nearly had to jump from my balcony to get out of my house. We had howling winds, providing a bracing -45 C wind chill. The wind blew snow into the narrow passage where the door to my unit and my 3 neighbours open up. The snow got scoured into a rock-solid drift that completely blocked the door from opening.
I managed to kick my screen door out enough to effect egress, but it was close. I wasn't sure it would work either, as I couldn't see how big the drift was, and was worried I would break the door.
Then, to add insult to the already shitty morning, it was so cold that the remote starter for my car didn't work. So the car was frozen cold too. Gave me time to scrape windows and kick a hole in the drifts sufficient that my 80-yr old neighbour could get out if he had to.
Today it's much nicer. It's only -3 C, and supposed to 5 C by Monday.

We spent the day getting ready for what is either going to be "the worst ice storm in 10 years", or a bit of cold damp weather, or something in between. I got the generator out of the shop, got it on the trailer and drove it to the house, made sure we had gas, starting fluid, and extension cords, and started it up and made sure it would run. Brought in enough firewood for 3 or 4 days, and made sure we have batteries for flashlights. We then went to town and got a replacement stock tank heater so the horses water tank doesn't freeze up. All this is probably unnecessary, but in the past we have had storms that took the power out for days at a time, and it's easier to do all this when there isn't 1/2 inch of ice covering everything. So we are finally all settled in for whatever weather shows up, anticipating not leaving the place for 2 or 3 days, and after a couple hours Gf says "I'm dying for a Hostess cupcake. I'm going to run to the store." I stare at her in disbelief for a few seconds. I consider pointing out the the house is full of food, and how reckless this could turn out to be if the sleet hits suddenly, and then say "Well, OK, pick me up some Ding Dongs." Man, we must be the whitest, most midwestern people ever.

It's just barely above freezing and raining. It's going to keep raining all day. And most of tomorrow too.
I'm grateful I don't have to go to work but I do need to go get groceries... and the dog needs walking (which is worse)... and I want/need to go to the gym later.
Gross. I guess I'm glad it's not 3 degrees cooler or this would all be ice.

Today it was sunny and got up into the high 60's. I put the top down on the convertible and took a drive this afternoon. I ran into an old friend I hadn't seen in years and we had a nice talk. This was a nice antidote to the weeks of dark, rainy, cold weather we have had lately.

The nice thing about having a week and a half of solid, dense cloud cover is that when the clouds finally broke it was amazing how light it still was when I left work. We're gaining, like, two minutes of daylight on the evening end every day, so it was such a drastic change from a week and a half earlier that it was like a tiny little Daylight Savings time change had happened.

Six years ago today we were under 2 feet of snow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_31_%E2%80%93_February_2,_2011_North_American_blizzard ... took three days before we could unearth the car, I remember the weenie little truck-plows they sent in were not enough to clear our apartment complex parking lot. In 2015 we also got hit with a blizzard around Groundhog Day, although it was on a Sunday and got cleared a lot faster. This year? We barely had any snow in January.

Record highs today! It's 65 and glorious! Abundant sunshine, bright blue skies, the kind of day that makes you go, "Ahhhh, isn't April the BEST?"
We're supposed to get almost ten inches of snow overnight and into tomorrow morning.
Go figure.

Winter is pretty much over here. Already seeing flowers on trees, green buds, etc. Temps ranging from the 80s to the low 60s for the foreseeable future.
The most frustrating thing about Houston winters is, it just doesn't stay cold. We might hit 40s, but two days later it will literally be back in the 80s again.

Really?! Wow. It's 70 now, but is dropping precipitately tomorrow night (below zero). I wouldn't mind another snowstorm before winter is over. We ended up getting about four inches of snow, after about an hour or two overnight of freezing rain as the temperatures plummeted. SNOW DAY! It was bonkers, though, how Wednesday felt like April was upon us, and then Thursday was bitterly, bitterly cold with a heavy snowfall. It's cold still today, but should be back in the 40's and even maybe the 50's next week. One of our neighbors was out while we were moving our cars for the plow guy yesterday; the neighbor's driveway faces south (unlike ours), and she was trying to decide whether to bother shoveling. Our snow will still be there even after weeks of mild weather, because it faces north and is all shaded to boot, but she was like, "Eh. 45 all weekend, and sunny? Probably not worth the trouble now..." This snow will be (other than in front of our garage) a memory very soon.

Tuesday and Wednesday here in Maryland were lovely - 65-70 degrees, sunny, with a light breeze.
Yesterday it snowed about an inch and the temperature dropped to 32 by the time I went to PT at 1:30 PM, and the wind was blowing so hard I actually lost control of my car door when opening it in the parking lot. Fortunately, I was in a corner space and in no danger of dinging anyone else's car door.
Today it's sunny and has barely reached 28 degrees. Even the Metro stations are fucking freezing.
No wonder I have a headache.

I had put on a skirt and when I heard the wind screaming while I was having breakfast, I went back and changed into pants.
