Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Dir. Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis Premiered April 13, 2007
In deciding what movies to review for this project, there was no plan. Some I chose simply because I saw them at the time, or came to them later. Some I just remember seeing ads for, or being critically acclaimed, or alternately reviled. Sometimes, though, curiosity got the better of me.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a late-night cartoon for stoned college students, which I guess includes me since I watched my roommate’s DVDs of it in sophomore year. It revolves around a family (?) of sentient fast food products who live in south Jersey and allegedly solve crimes but don’t really do anything: reasonable Frylock, cruel, selfish Master Shake, and brainless Meatwad. Each episode was ten minutes long, which is about right.
In this film, the trio are confronted with an armada of monstrous, self-replicating exercise machines and a conniving slice of watermelon accompanied by Rush drummer Neil Peart.
The TV show’s brand of comic stupidity is only really meant to last ten minutes. This is like a 96-minute episode. It’s so stupid that it becomes funny, then comes all the way back around to being stupid again. This will not be the worst film I review, but it might be the dumbest.
Actually, that’s probably not true.
Additional Notes Sign this was made in 2007: It’s an Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie.
Next Time: Disturbia

This type of humor absolutely only works in 11-minute increments (see also the Tim and Eric movie), but this movie was also hobbled by having its very first scene (the "let's go out to the lobby..." parody) be by far the funniest part of the movie. Someone inexplicably actually brought their baby to the movie when I saw it in theaters, so the lines about bringing your baby to the movie were extra funny for the rest of us.

I was hot and heavy into Aqua Teen for awhile, but somehow I never saw this. I'm wondering if it has been long enough to land nostalgia points with me yet.
Adult Swim will always be interesting to me, because I watched it so hard for such a relatively narrow span of time, maybe 2-3 years, and then stopped cold, never to watch it again. Even seeing commercials or images from Sealab 2021, Brak Show, Space Ghost and of course ATHF takes me back to so many specific memories of 12th grade through my 2nd year of college. The friends, the movies, the games, the hanging out. I've never gone back to watch any of the shows, so I don't know if it would make those memories all the more powerful or not.

I like ATHF for the first few years, but it seems like it should be this weird thing that produced 11 episodes and then disappeared. As an eternal zombie show, I just got bored with it eventually, and almost never revisit it - whereas I still have a lot of love for Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman. By the time the ATHF movie came out, I just didn't care about it anymore.

Had been cannabis-free for a few weeks when I saw this at cinema on 04/20/07 no less. Laff'd, guffawed, and generally wished I was just a little high to enhance the raucous joy and weirdness this film contains. Carl got RIPPED with Insanoflex, then Dr. Weird really showed everybody what the reasons were. Somehow I own this on DVD but never re-watch it.

Even though I'm a few years older than you, I'm in the same boat you are. I loved Adult Swim from 2001 or so until 2004...then, I just stopped watching and caring. I was actually shocked to hear ATHF got cancelled a couple of years ago--because I had no idea it was still even on. I thought about seeing the movie when it came out, but didn't, and have never felt like I missed anything. That said, even to this day, I can sing most of the ATHF theme song (Meatwad makes the money, see/Meatwad gets the honeys, see).

I stuck with Adult Swim much longer, all the way from 2001-2009. I found plenty of good comedy in it, all while being completely sober. There were so many great shows, some of which I continued to follow later. (There was also plenty of crap.) It wasn't until we got a new cable plan last year that I finally dropped Cartoon Network altogether, relegating my Adventure Time and Venture Brothers viewing to online streams and DVDs.
Indeed, the most memorable thing about this movie, which I only saw once, was the opening parody with Mastodon. LINOLEUM KNIIIIFE! Second place goes to the real-life promotional Mooninite signs used for guerrilla marketing that caused bomb scares. The movie wasn't the worst, but it was a sign of the end.
Like the Simpsons, I can fairly pinpoint exactly when I decided ATHF wasn't worth my time: season 4's "Dickesode". The movie came out in the summer after that season, and yeah, it didn't bring me back into the fold.

Remember, Boston is the same place that, six years later, literally shut the entire city down to search for two college kids (yes, they committed a horrible crime, but still...shutting down the sixth largest metro area in the country?).

This parallels my experience nearly exactly. I was really into the Adult Swim stuff in the early days, which lined up with my early college time, friends I never see anymore, not having much of a life and so being able to devote serious time to computer games, etc. but after a while, as newer shows cycled on, I just stopped caring at all. ATHF was always a second-string show for me in my Adult Swim love. Nothing else they've ever done approached the highs of Sealab (before Goz passed away), Space Ghost, and The Brak Show (which was my favorite). I still like to hit my Brak Show DVDs on occasion, and love the show still. We re-watched Sealab on Hulu recently and enjoyed most of that, too. ATHF was never my fav, so I'm not sure how well it would hold up for me.

Did Neil Peart voice himself in the film?
