Finally saw it last night. I feel bad now for silently assuming @matt1 was wrong about everything. I didn't hate it, I wouldn't put it below Sith. But I thought it was going to be everything I wanted TFA to be, and it was very much not. Every character was under-developed. The first act was simultaneously a drag and rushed (because they were moving right along without developing the characters). I assumed that would kind of be the whole deal, since we already know the beginning and end of the story it wouldn't be all about action. Ben Mendelsohn was far and away the most interesting character. I thought CGI Peter Cushing looked pretty OK. I didn't hate Alan Tudyk's droid, Wifemate kind of did. As with TFA, most of the fanservice just pissed me off. I saw it tonight too and had much of the same reactions. I'd slot it above the prequel trilogy and below everything else. The action was incredible, and I especially loved Diego Luna, but every single other character besides the droid, even Jyn, was underdeveloped. CGI Tarkin was fine in his first scene but got more hokey the more his screentime wore on (don't even get me started on the CGI cameo at the end, ugh). Vader should not have appeared until the end, and his Sauron-esque fortress was a fucking joke. I cringed so hard at that entire conversation, even before the ghastly pun. And I like puns. Where I differ with you guys is in the villainy. Am I remembering wrong, or was Vader barely in A New Hope? It seems that these new SW films have a villain exposure problem. Ben Mendelsohn, fine actor as he is, was overused and underwritten. Most of his scenes could have easily been cut, so we could spend more time with the characters we're actually supposed to care about (of which there were also too many). I do commend the film for its diversity of casting, but jesus christ are there no rebel women? Discounting Jyn, I remember two: Mon Mothma and a nameless pilot. I have to believe it wouldn't have been hard to at least find some female extras to play rebel soldiers, especially in the otherwise thrilling climax. I know SW has a woman problem, but this would have been a great opportunity to attempt to help right the ship. Baby steps, I suppose. This is all hot take as we just got out of the movie half an hour ago. But I feel like I spent half my experience thrilled and the other half rolling my eyes. I certainly don't regret it, but I'm conflicted. When Hannibal sent the flash drive in the pilot's sock, could he not just send the plans? Or at least a rough overview? It didn't take that long to transmit so I assume the file size wasn't that large. But that would rob us of the chance to see literally everybody die, so I guess it's a moot point.

If it wasnt a Star Wars movie I wouldnt have such vitriol towards it. I would just chalk it up as a kinda below average action flick I wouldnt watch again. But because it is star wars(my most favorite franchise of anything ever) and because I think people are only liking as much because it has a star wars name slapped on it, Im going full truther mode here.

Darth Vader had a good bit of screentime in a new hope, but he was more of a presence. He wasnt fully fleshed as a character which worked for him because of what he is. It was empire where he really wasn't in it till the end. And then return is where his character was fleshed out.

Something was wrong with the Rogue 1 Vader; the neckpiece looked like it was made of rubber or something. SW isn't my favorite anything ever, but I think I'm especially hard on these movies just out of habit.
Ben Mendelsohn probably shouldn't have shot every engineer who knows how to work on this thing. Also I'm glad someone finally mentioned the Death Star going into hyperspace. How does it move? It has no exhaust ports like every other ship in space.

I assume it has multiple ion engines, the same ones that it uses to position itself.

I can tell you you're just objectively wrong there. I loved it, and it was because it was a like a WEG RPG game brought to life. You didn't like it, which is fine, but you're not just "right."

People like things that you don't. It doesn't make you right and them wrong, or vice-versa. Unless people like Chuck Lorre sitcoms. Those people are wrong.

OThose people are wrong. but it is a true thing people have an affinity for certain things and are willing to forgive something they already like over something they don't. I definitely would care for phantom menace or attack of the clones if they were not already star wars.

Something was wrong with the Rogue 1 Vader; the neckpiece looked like it was made of rubber or something. I did notice that R1 Vader was missing the chain around his neck for the cape, but apparently that doesn't make an appearance til Empire or Jedi, so maybe they were matching the ANH look more. The voice was really off, though. It sounded less like Vader was trying to be menacing, and more like he was just kind of tired and having a casual conversation.

James Earl Jones is 85, and may be hitting that "Mel Blanc in the 80s" period where they feel like they can't replace him but he doesn't sound like he used to.

They were definitely going for more of an ANH look because they had those reddish lenses on the mask too.

I believe the lenses were corrected to black in the Special Edition.

I think if they use Tarkin again, they should go with Julian Richings: Not identical or anything, but he plays that sort of very dry character well, and knows how to sell ludicrous genre stuff, as much of it as he's done.

Lots of stuff from the visual guides on this page, but the short answer is 'ion engines, and lots of them'I figured they'd just use gravity well generators to create an area of high gravity far from the ship, that they would fall into, and then repeat the process to generate more speed.
