Is there a difference between the different marinara sauces at the market? Like, should I splurge on those $5 jars over the $1.75 a jar sauces? What marinara sauce do you buy? ...and let's just get the slow clap out of the way for everyone who makes sauce at home. I am not asking for recipes for homemade sauce or asking you about your homemade sauce. I asked about store bought sauce. But good for you for making your own sauce tho. Rao's is pretty good. But, seriously, make your own sauce.

I haven't bought in a while (not because I'm making my own, but because I'm not turning much to pasta as an entree lately) but when I did I remember thinking Mario Batali's sauce was pretty good and had lower levels of sugar compared to others. i can't remember if it was expensive, but if i bought it (unless it was on sale) then it probably wasn't too bad.

Okay, this year i am getting the in season tomatoes, cutting them up, and freezing them. Not to make sauce, but to have fresh tomatoes to add to dishes through the year. That and basil. No, I don't want to can. Also, thanks everyone who has answered this question so far..and to anyne else who wants to make suggestions. Tomatoes are so easy to freeze -- you don't even have to take the trouble to cut them up. Just put them whole in a freezer bag, and when you want to use them you can run them under a warm tap for a few seconds to rub the skins off, then chop them up without even having to thaw them. I find a serrated bread knife works great on them when they're still frozen solid. You kind of end up with a chunky tomato granita that cooks down really nicely. (They don't thaw into nice fresh tomatoes, though. Like, you wouldn't want to toss them into a salad. But soups? Stews? Braises? Or to jazz up store-brand marinara? Perfect!) Life... HACKED!

At this point, the "make your own sauce" people have ensured that I will never make my own sauce.

So I splurged on some Rao's puttanesca sauce. It was good; whole olives and capers, and strong on flavor. I would pay $3-4 dollars for it, not $6+.

So some weeks back Mrs. Snape bought a bottle of "pizza sauce" to make pizza with the kiddo. Not pasta sauce, not tomato sauce. Pizza sauce. I don't remember why I wasn't around, but that's what happened. Kroger brand.
Now I think I make a pretty mean homemade tomato sauce. It's easy, I can make it in bulk, and I like it more than the store bought stuff. But while kiddo merely tolerates my tomato sauce, putting in little more than a token effort on red sauce night, she will wolf down pasta covered in this Kroger brand pizza sauce. I think it's going to become another one of those ingredients like bottled ranch dressing that I keep on hand, not because I'm proud of it, but because it works.

LazBro Is it sweeter than your stuff? If so, that might be why Baby Snape likes it so much. I still think Rao's is hella overpriced for what it is and that the $1/jar Wegmans brand marinara is the best storebought sauce you can get. FIGHT ME, Y'ALL. (Though I did use a jar of Giant's red wine marinara last night for sausage and peppers and I think it was pretty good. I dunno, I have a cold so all I could taste was the spiciness of the hot Italian sausage anyway.) Also leavesillybunsalone.gif, for heaven's sake.
