This weekend I bought a shirt that is bright red. And it is a red that is just less than fluorescent, and veering towards orange. I wish I could find a picture. I may have to take a selfie.
I am not convinced I can pull off this color. It isn't the worst color I could try. Pastels are an absolute no go for me, as they make me look nauseated. However, bright colors are also somewhat iffy. However, I decided that I needed something bright and cheerful in my wardrobe, and since it doesn't make me look ill, it's fine.
We'll see how this goes.

Yeah, I haven't tried a red top and red pants before. However, a red dress is fine. Red isn't the problem with this top. Red is normally a great color for me. The problem is the near-fluorescent red-orange shade. I have pale skin with olive undertone. This doesn't make me look sickly like pastels do, but it is just slightly too bright for me to really pull off.
Related: Why is it now so hard to find non-pastel clothing in Spring? If I don't want white, and can't wear pastel, why are there so few other options? My only options seem to be spring or olive green. Luckily I love green. But wow.

I'm going to a wedding in May, I've been looking for a new dress, and I asked my fellow plus-size besties if they had any recs/ideas.
And one of them asked if I've tried Shein. Which ... man, I'm not gonna say all of my clothes are top-notch ethically sourced and made, but Shein? Isn't that all basically plastic produced by slaves?

I haven't bought anything yet from this store so not sure about the quality, but the prints look lovely and the business seems to be ethical.

I found a cute dress at Torrid I'm gonna give a shot, but had to order it online so we'll see - sometimes I'm bad at judging how something will look on me vs on the website. I do appreciate the link though!!

The discourse around Shein is crazy—people leveraging left-derived arguments to argue they need designer clothing as if Shein is a national health service.
The thing is, though, that it’s likely Shein’s main customer base is not poor (or really, 19 year I of a who’ve just been introduced to critical theory) but middle-class people who do these huge hauls. Their profits, at least in the west, are probably like a liquor store’s—they make their real money from addicts.
It always surprises me how much stuff people have—the few times I’ve gone to a resale store I bring in something like four things (three of which get rejected), but people have these huge bags of clothing that would only fit in my closet because it’s a massive closet with wall-sized sliding doors. I have a pretty low acceptance rate, which I expect (but hey, cash is cash) because I don’t necessarily have stuff that moves. But those huge closets of Zara and the like—they do go even though it’s still fast fashion (even if it’s in a better class than Shein).
Obviously there’s also a huge men’s vs. women’s thing, as well. Even people who are pretty fashionable tend to move at a slower pace (I’ve been following Shuhei Nishiguchi of Beams for a few years. Now and he still wears a lot of the same stuff).

Even people who are pretty fashionable tend to move at a slower pace (I’ve been following Shuhei Nishiguchi of Beams for a few years. Now and he still wears a lot of the same stuff). Oh yeah, there are many different ways to slice the fast fashion argument, but any way you look at it, Chinese companies like Shein, Zaful, Wish, etc. etc. are all by-products of Western overconsumption. Western brands' outsourcing to China is what initially created a glut of rejected merchandise that these sites began selling direct-to-consumer. Now, the demand for cheap fashion has shut down the Western brands' brick-and-mortar businesses and the clothes are being sold without the markup, for closer to what it cost to produce them (using slave labor). So in some ways the model is more efficient, but worse overall. On the whole 'classist' argument, I'm with JLL in placing the blame on affluent overconsumption rather than poor peoples' need. Low-income communities have always had discount fashion retailers like Rainbow, Strawberry (my go-to when I made 24k a year as a youth counselor), Discovery, etc. Those provide the instant gratification of trying stuff on and bringing it home right away to wear. If you're willing to wait weeks/months for a $25 dress you don't really need that dress.

Agree w/you and with moimoi, people say they can't afford nice/high quality clothing but the poor are definitely not the target for Shein. I am not immune to overconsumption - I own a lot of t-shirts and socks, for instance - but I also do my best to keep what I have in good shape and buy things that are decent quality to begin with.

Louis Vuitton Dollhouse Handbag, a replica of the founder's house where he created his first workshop. I would pay upwards of $100 for this if I found it in a thrift store, but I imagine it's worth ten times that.
