Real cool of the IOC to decide not to have any sort of medal ceremony should Valieva happen to medal. Real cool to penalize whoever else hypothetically medals with her as harshly as she herself is being punished. Real cool of the IOC to give the US and Japan their moment in the sun and do a "Oopsie-doodle we fucked up..." mea culpa medal ceremony for these ice skating cats in Paris later today. Sorry to Canada for somehow losing their appeals to get moved into bronze after all that scumfuckery. sports.yahoo.com/finally-us-figure-skaters-beijing-182455106.html

Canada should have been bumped up to that Bronze medal position. That stinks for them.
But I'm glad they had a public medal ceremony for everyone. Finally.

The track events I saw last night were pretty exciting. I like how the men's 1500m was hyped up as between the Norwegian guy and the British guy and then bam, American runner comes out of the pack to win it all (and the very cocky Norwegian guy got shut out).
My husband reported there was a 49 year old from South Africa competing in skateboarding this morning, very much How Do You Do Fellow Kids.

I am feeling terrible so I am awake at 3-5am and catching up on Field events like Discus, Pole Vault, Shot Put, etc.
Finally seeing that World Record pole vaulter. In this Pole Vault final, it was delightful to see this Greek pole vaulter, Emmanouil Karalis, scream with joy after reaching the 5.9M height. The commentators said this was close to his personal best. And then his wonderful shock when he realized he won a medal. And then Sam Kendricks celebrates his higher attempt, it was a season high. It is just great to see athletes express this joy when they perform at their best. I was incredibly impressed at Armand Duplantis going for that World Record, even after he knew he had the Gold medal, after he set the Olympic record, and after he himself already had the World Record! Wow! That was incredible!

In yesterday's events, regarding Jamaican long jumper Wayne Pinnock, I heard the British commentator call the University of Arkansas "Ar-Kansas". Like, the state of Kansas, but with the prefix "ar".
The Women's Hammer throw medal presenter did not exactly put the medals on backwards, but they twisted around on both the Bronze and Silver medalists to be backwards, and neither of them fixed it. The Gold medalist had it on the correct way.
Edited to add: The track events yesterday were so fun!
The Men's 1500M was amazing! Wow, what a crazy finish! Wow, Jakob Ingebrigtsen went out so fast, like, "I dare you all to catch me!" And then they did. Oops! Also, I saw the medal presenter hang the Bronze medal backwards on Yared Nuguse. And then Nuguse flipped it around to the correct side. Good for him! The presenters hung the medals correctly on Kerr and Hocker.
The Women's Steeplechase was also great fun. Loved seeing the winner Winfred Yavi just come from behind and run everyone down.
And then the Women's 200M had a fantastic run by Gabby Thomas. Wow! And Julien Alfred wins a second Olympic medal. Tremendous achievement.
Regarding medal direction, saw a clip of the USA swim medalists on the Today show. This was every USA medalist with all of their medals. Approximately 90% of their medals were hung backwards.
Saw Léon Marchand do an appearance at the Champions Park in Paris. He had no shirt on. But he was wearing one of his gold medals. It was facing the correct way, of course.

The state actually has a law on the books about the correct pronunciation: law.justia.com/codes/arkansas/title-1/chapter-4/section-1-4-105/

I also enjoyed in the Men's 1500M that the British commentator was constantly pronouncing Cole Hocker's last name "Hoe-ker", while the female commentator kept trying to correct him. He finally got it correct during the medal ceremony, after the stadium PA announcer pronounced it correctly.

I just watched that 1500M event. Yeah, that was highly entertaining! It was so funny how Ingebrigtsen just thought he could run faster than everyone else, and then realized, "Oh no, I can't". Ah, very fun. And how the announcers were so surprised at that stretch run. Great stuff!
I just saw the TV feed replay of it, rather than the World Feed I watched earlier. At least these TV feed people pronounced everyone's names correctly!

There's a fun couple of clips going around on social media from the USA basketball game yesterday, with the crowd suddenly roaring and cheering, and LeBron James thinks it's for him. But they are actually chanting "Léon! Léon!" because Léon Marchand was spotted in the arena. Ah, I love the Olympics where a French swimmer can be more popular than LeBron James.

SPOILER for Men's 200M:
Well, that was a surprise - Noah Lyles apparently ran yesterday and today with covid, no wonder he didn't win. Hope he feels better soon, I worry a bit about his lungs between the covid and the asthma.

I'm catching up on yesterday's Track and Field. Medal ceremonies from the day before: Only a couple of medals were hung backwards on the athletes here. Grant Holloway's originally went on backwards, but he turned it around. Saw one of the others turn it around, too. Athletes seem to be getting better at this. Watched the Women's 4X100 relay just now. It is pouring rain for this. I wonder how this affects them? I'm watching the World Feed of this, and after the Women's race was done, they slam the USA Men's team for constantly having problems in the exchanges in relays. LOL, the USA Men's relay is now a punching bag. Then the Men's 4X100 relay starts. And, as predicted, the Men's USA team totally fails at this. Like clockwork. How on earth can the USA men's relay team be so bad at this? And this is something that wouldn't be fixed by having Noah Lyles there. And the commentators are brutal to them, slamming them for being so pathetic with this. Women's 400M - Wow, Paulino was great in this! Torched the field coming off the final curve. Wow. Women's 10K - Double gold for Chebet. She had an amazing final lap, and still almost got chased down. Fun race. And then one of the Triple Jump dudes proposed to his girlfriend. It is terrible when the partner of one of the competitors proposes, because it steals the moment from the competitor. I'm not sure if I like one of the athletes proposing, either. Like, talk about putting pressure on someone! Aaaaaaahhh! Men's 400M Hurdles - Can Raj Benjamin finally win a gold medal? As they're getting ready, the camera lingers on the guy from Brazil, Dos Santos. He is nearly bald, has only one layer of fuzz on his head, which appears to be purple. When the camera is on him, he puts his hands to his head and seems to be making sure his hair looks good. This is hilarious. This dude barely has any hair. And Benjamin finally wins it! Woooo! Wow, he was way ahead of Warholm this time. And Dos Santos with his purple hair finishes with Bronze. Medal ceremony for the Men's 200M. Noah Lyles is here, wearing an N95 mask. They put the medal on him backwards, but he turned it around. They put the medal backwards on the Gold medalist, Tebogo, also. He also turned it around. Ha! Great to see the athletes making sure the medals are facing the correct way. Cameras catch the Gold medalist, Tebogo, taking selfies with the crowd, once with one of the coaches from Great Britain. Ha! Medal ceremony for the Women's 400M Hurdles - These three women all look so happy! Yay! Medal gets put backwards on the Silver medalist, Cockrell. But when they present her the poster right after that, as she leans forward, the medal turns around to hang the correct way.
Edited: Bol looked really happy on the medal podium, but she was saying in interviews that she was incredibly disappointed with that race. She has a great game face, then!
Not sure I commented on that event. But wow, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone looked sensational in that! 4X100 Women's Relay medal ceremony - LOL, the commentator praises the US Women for getting it done and again mentions how the USA Men failed. Aw, Sha'carri Richardson is crying. Awwww!

One upside of NBC's nationalistic coverage is that a lot of table tennis gets on TV so they can keep tabs on the competing Chinese medal count.

Now watching today's Track and Field replay.
Wow! Women's 100M Hurdle was great! Photo finish! Incredible finish!
Watched the Men's 5K. Jakob Ingebrigtsen may have lost that 1500M, but wow, he obliterated the field here. Was hanging around 5th-7th for most of the laps. Then with a couple laps to go, he moved up. For the last lap he just casually moved ahead on the backside, then coming around the final turn he just blew past everyone and got a BIG lead. He was way ahead down the stretch. Good for Grant Fisher to come up at the end there and grab that Bronze medal.
Women's 1500M - Faith Kipyegon was in this race, and I just assumed she would win. And of course she does. She's such a great runner. Wow. She's so great. Hilariously, she looked so surprised about this! Girl, I've only ever seen you in the Olympics, and this didn't surprise me. It was so fun to see!
Men's 4X400 relay - Whew, USA just manages to pull that off. Raj Benjamin muscled his way to the finish there to just outrun Tebogo. Great race! So, the 400 guys can correctly run a relay. What is wrong with the 100 guys?
For a field event, why did these idiots in the Men's High Jump not just agree to share the Gold medal? Why are they putting themselves through more and more jumping? Saw an interview with them, apparently it was Kerr who wanted to do this. Yeesh man. Why not just take the guaranteed gold? Ridiculous.
Women's 4X400 relay - Absolute domination by the USA women! Wow! Only .1 off the World Record. Wow. Edited to add: That is 3 gold medals for Gabby Thomas! Wow!

Watching the medal ceremony for the Men's 800M. The commentators are talking about the incredible times in this race and how the Silver Medalist ran the 4th fastest time in history and it was only good for Silver.
Yep. Sometimes that happens. Talk to Raj Benjamin about the Tokyo 2021 400M hurdles!
Or, in this Paris Olympics when in the Swimming events Kristof Milak did the 200M Butterfly in 1:51.7 and came in 2nd. He looked so shocked. The only person who'd ever swum that 200 Fly faster than that is HIM.
Anyway, Medal Ceremony for Women's 100M Hurdles - The medal presenter put the medal on the Bronze medalist the correct way. Then she looked at it, looked at both sides, and deliberately flipped it around to face backwards. Sigh. The presenter hung the medal backwards on the Gold medalist. And she kept it that way. Alas. We had been on such a roll. Masai Russell is crying through this national anthem. The Silver medalist had the medal the right way, but when they went to take pictures, she turned hers backwards to match the other two. Ugh.
Men's 5K medal ceremony - We are losing the battle. Medal was correct on the Bronze medalist Fisher, and he turned it around to face backwards. Same for Ingebrigtsen and the Gold medal. Alas. The announcers here said Fisher is the first American to medal in both the 5K and 10K. Wow!
Men's relay medal ceremony - Three cheers for the Botswanan team, who had medals hung backwards on them, but turned them around. One of the USA team members also had it hung backwards, and he took it off and flipped it over to hand the correct way. We're getting back on track here, but one of the USA guys left it hanging backwards. Sigh. Announcers said Benjamin is the only 400M Hurdles gold medalist who has ever anchored the 4X400 relay. That is surprising.
Women's relay ceremony - Dutch team (silver) all but one turned the medals to face the correct way. USA, all but one of them made sure the medals were the correct way.
Moving on, I did watch some of the Breaking competition. This is silly. This is not a sport. This is an art. Remove this from the Olympics. I love watching Breaking. I watch so many of these people on YouTube. I love this. It is not a sport. It is an art.

Rai Benjamin (not Raj) was great. Both 400m relay teams were great which tells me the men are capable of good baton passes. And hey the 16 year old who ran in the heat gets a gold medal! Good for him!
Breaking will not be in LA, I can’t see it returning.

In the interest of fairness and objectivity all Olympic breakers should've been required to dance to one and only one song: the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight."

Just yesterday we were talking about the LA olympics and what would be added, and lacrosse, baseball and cricket were all mentioned .... and what do you know, all three will be in LA.... plus squash and flag football. I can't remember if I knew that or not but I definitely didn't remember it two days ago!

I wonder if I could parlay my high school lacrosse career and Korean fluency into a color commentary gig for one of the broadcasters here in Korea for 2028. I'm going to guess that the pool of people here who understand lacrosse and speak Korean is pretty limited. Maybe some former exchange students to the US or a handful of US military personnel and/or civilian contractors.
