Well this was a fun week wasn't it?
Starting with the West Coast, Arizona had two defensive touchdowns to beat their in state rivals Arizona State 42-35. Earlier that day Stanford sacked UCLA's Quarterback Brett Handly four time to allow Arizona to advance to the Championship. Their future opponent in that game, Oregon, easily defeated Oregon State 47-19. Marcus Mariota had four touchdown passes and two rushing TD. Earlier this year I called him the Tony Romo of college football. I really want him to prove me wrong.
TCU took care of business over Texas 48-10. Trevone Boykin had two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. Texas had six turnovers.
There was nothing at stake for the USC/Notre Dame game, except the pleasure of each others' company. USC scored 35 unanswered points in the first half and Cody Kesler had 372 yards and six touchdown passes as USC crushed the Irish 49-14. North Carolina State had 388 rushing yards in their 35-7 defeat of UNC. Baylor held on to win 48-46 over Texas Tech. I want to point out that TTU went for two points on their last two touchdowns and missed both times. Had they kicked the extra points, they would have tied it.
The ACC played the SEC in four different games this week. Georgia Tech us already going to the championship game and Georgia is not, so it was for bragging rights. Harrison Butler hit a 53 yard field goal to send it in to overtime. GT won the game but Wide received DeAndre Smelter is doubtful against Florida State. Gerold Holliman tied the NCAA record for interceptions with 14 as Louisville beat Kentucky. The return of quarterback Deshaun Watson resulted in Clemson's 35-17 defeat over South Carolina. He passed for 269 yards and two touchdowns, breaking a five game losing streak at the hands of the Gamecocks.
And then there was Florida State. Everyone's favorite target of scorn, Jameis Winston through three interceptions in the first quarter, but FSU's defense held Florida to field goals. Terrance Smith's pick six started a 21 point second quarter for the Noles. Now Florida also missed two field goals that combined would have won them the game, but in the end, FSU survived another close game to win 24-19 in Muschamp's last game as Florida's head coach. It was an ugly win, with one of the ugliest first quarters I've ever seen, but true to form, they came back and won. Still undefeated. So in all four games, the ACC beat the SEC.
Moving to the Big Ten, Michigan State returned the opening kickoff to set the stage for a defeat of Penn State 34-10. Indiana defeated Purdue 23-16 to claim the Old Oaken Bucket. Nebraska was down by 17 points but came back to win it 37-34. As a reward for the win, coach Bo Pelini was fired, which brings the head count to three. Brady Hoke, we're looking at you next. Wisconsin overcame a 17-3 deficit and Melvin Gordon had 151 to defeat Minnesota 34-24. They will face Ohio State in the championship
Michigan kept up with Ohio State for three quarters, but fell 42-28. But it was not a great day for the Buckeyes. Quarterback J.T Barrett was injured in the fourth quarter and is out for the rest of the season. And that even wasn't the worst thing. I don't know of any of you were following the story of the missing lineman Kasta Karageorge, but he went missing before Thanksgiving. It was said that we was suffering from concussions and had texted his mother some disturbing things. Sadly, they found his body in a dumpster with an self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday. I'm no expert on concussions, but I don't think that something like this is going to go ignored.
Okay, on to the SEC. Arkansas led Missouri 14-6 at the half, but Missouri scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win 21-14. They will face Alabama in the SEC Championship. LSU beat Texas A&M 23-17. Mississippi State needed to beat Old Miss to go to the SEC championship, and they needed an Alabama loss. Neither happened. Bo Wallace passed for 296 yards to beat the Bulldogs 31-17, eliminating their playoff hopes.
Then there was the Iron Bowl, which Auburn won last year with a returned field goal in one of the most jaw dropping plays in recent memory. Auburn started the game by dropping a lateral, which then lead to an Alabama touchdown. Auburn took control of the game in the first half and it looked like there might be an upset, Alabama was even considering pulling their Quarterback Blake Sims, but he ended up with 312 yards and four touchdowns, to go with his three interceptions, Amari Cooper had 224 yards and three touchdowns. Auburns defense couldn't stop Alabama and for that Defensive Coordinator Ellis Johnson lost his job. Alabama comes back to win 55-44. I can't mind too much that they jumped us to be #1 in the AP polls after that
So my four really haven't changed. It's still Alabama, Florida State, Oregon and TCU, but that might change after this weeks games.
So that's the mostly the end of the regular season. Next week. Since the poorly named Big 12 doesn't have a championship game since they don't have a enough teams, they will play their final games of the season. TCU plays Iowa State, Baylor plays Kansas State, and Oklahoma plays Oklahoma State. Pac-12 Championship: Oregon vs. Arizona; SEC Championship: Alabama vs. Missouri; ACC Championship: Florida State vs. Georgia Tech; and the Big 10 Championship: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin. After that, we'll know who's going where.

I'm going out on a limb this weekend and say the rash of upsets that has defined the season will continue. Georgia Tech will beat Florida State and Wisconsin will take out Ohio State. That will leave the committee a very easy 1-2-3-4 of Alabama, Oregon, TCU, and Baylor, with the only debate being if the Bears or Frogs deserve the #3 slot.

Is CBS going to keep putting Lane Kiffin on camera because Nick Saban is too ugly?

Because of my desire to see a college football playoff entirely devoid of SEC entries, for the first time in my life I am actually rooting for Missouri, which is deeply painful as a Kansas Jayhawks fan. I feel irrevocably dirty.

Ugh, I'm so tired of watching narrow FSU escapes. Well, now we'll see which two very deserving teams between TCU, OSU and Baylor will end up shut out tomorrow. . .

Pains me to say it as a Big 12 fan, but I think that fourth in should be OSU. I wouldn't have said that this morning, but they did a phenomenal, convincing job playing through strife and making an impressive case for their inclusion. For Baylor and TCU, unfortunately I think the B12's lack of conference tournament hurts them. TCU was better overall, but losing head-to-head against Baylor muddies the water and I think the confusion may cancel both teams out. But it's a damn tough call, considering both of them took care of business today.

Yeah, the six contenders did the committee no favors today. When it comes to Baylor vs. TCU, I think the three-slot difference from last week suggests that the committee was perfectly aware that Baylor was playing a good team while TCU was playing a bad team this week, and so the outcome of today's games (unless Iowa State pulled the upset of the year) didn't really matter. However, Ohio State definitely throws a wrench into the proceedings. If I was a betting man, I'd say TCU gets the 4th seed--but just barely. I think Baylor is out no matter what.
If both TCU and Baylor are on the outside looking in, expect to see a lot of discussion about the Big 12-2-2+2 getting back to 12 teams. If I had to guess, I'd say the new teams would be either Cincinnati/Memphis or Colorado State/New Mexico, or one from each pairing. None of those schools are ideal, but they're not going to lure any Pac-12, Big 10, or SEC schools over, and the ACC is too far outside of the footprint, even with West Virginia in the conference.

I think I had a bit of a wait and see attitude about Ohio State with their third string quarterback coming, who did a fine job. You have to give credit to the defense to completly shutvtge out and make Melvin irrelevant So, I'm guessing Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, and Florida State in that order. This way they keep it local. Bama and FSU in New Orleans. Oregon and Ohio State in the Rose Bowl (Where those two would have met anyways in the pre-BCS era)

On the one hand, if everyone assumes that this thing is eventually going to 8 teams, maybe you just take your lumps for a couple years knowing that they'd never keep the Big 12 champ out of an 8-team field. On the other hand, I can totally see the Big 12 making something of a panic move and adding two teams to make sure they're not penalized for not having a championship game/clear champion.
And as much as I love the purity of the round-robin schedule, a new north division would probably be a godsend for Iowa State and KU because it would probably mean two things happening: 1) Adding 2 more decent basketball schools 2) Significantly lowering our ridiculous strength-of-schedules and making the road back to respectability a bit easier. Even if they still kept things at 9 conference games, swapping out say OU and Baylor for something like Cincy or Memphis every year would be huge.

Yeah, the Big 12-2-2+2 shouldn't overreact. My guess is that the way Ohio State played on Saturday night, they were going to get a slot, no matter what, even if Baylor and TCU had staged a rematch, or the Baylor/K-State game was actually the conference championship game. It's impossible to know what the committee would have done if the final score had been, say, Ohio State 24, Wisconsin 21.
The conference should also remember that the championship game can hurt as well as help. All four teams in the playoffs had to win on Saturday to secure their spots. And the Big 12 has been hurt before by their championship game. In 2007, Missouri was 11-1 and ranked #1 entering the championship game. 10-2 Oklahoma, which had beaten Mizzou earlier that year, won, and LSU and Ohio State played for the national championship. So to grab BYU or Cincinnati to get to 12 teams, or after a round-robin, stage a rematch between the #1 & #2 teams could just as easily screw over the conference in future years.

Yea, also WV was a big enough stretch, I can't see Cinci/Memphis/BYU really fitting in or offering much to the conference. Though I guess Baylor and BYU could set the record for tamest tailgate of all time.

I agree with all of that. I don't think there's any need for overzealous course correction - a lot of things had to happen in a very specific way for the B12 to get shut out like this. If the conference truly wants a championship game and can do it wisely, fine, but for it scramble to make that happen as a way of remedying this very particular outcome would be shortsighted. I tend to be inherently against adding (or subtracting) teams, probably due to retrograde horror from the years that conference realignment seemed perpetually to be on the brink of tearing the conference apart. But if it had to happen, as a basketball fan I'd love the value that Cinci and Memphis would add to the Big 12 - which probably makes those teams a long shot, since conference realignment decisions are almost always guided by football consideration.

I feel if I don't recap this, then it didn't happen...
Well the Big 12 only has ten teams, so they played their last games of the regular season this weekend. TCU played Iowa State and beat them 55-3. Keep in mind that Iowa State had beaten no one in their conference. Baylor too on the much higher ranked Kansas State, but beat them 38-27. Oklahoma State surprised us all by beating Oklahoma 38-35. Now based on head-to-head games. This means that Baylor, who beat TCU earlier in the year, would be the Conference champions. However, the conference decided to make Baylor and TCU co-champions because caring is sharing
Pac-12 Championship: Oregon vs. Arizona. Well, Oregon took a quarter to get things going, settling for field goals. Once they had the Wildcat's defense figured out (a defense that sacked Mariotta five times in their last meeting), then the Ducks went to town. Mariotta scored five times, two in the air and three on the ground, and completed 25 of 38 passes for 313 yards. Oregon simply outclassed Arizona, and Mariotta looks incredible. I really don't think anyone is going to be able to stand up to Oregon
SEC Championship: Alabama vs. Missouri. Missouri's defense suffered a loss early when Defensive end Shane Ray was ejected from the game for targeting Alabama quarterback Blake Sims. Alabama won 42-13
ACC Championship: Florida State vs. Georgia Tech. Well this game went back and forth through the first half. Each time the Yellowjackets would score, the Noles would come back. Their defense seemed to be able to stop their opponent until Florida State managed to get a stop. After that the Noles were held to field goals. Georgia Tech did get a late touchdown to pull within two point, but was unable to convert an onside kick. Florida state held on 37-35 and for once didn't look that bad. Winston really didn't make any bonehead plays and running back Dalvin Cook was a workhorse for the offense.
Big 10 Championship: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin. All eyes were on third-string quarterback Cardale Jones, and he was just fine. The very definition of next man up. Give the defense some credit too. They held Melvin Gordon and kept the badgers from scoring. 59-0
And so it boiled down to the final four: Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State. Leaving Baylor and TCU also sharing not getting in.
So Alabama will play Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl and Oregon will play Florida State in the Rose Bowl. Obviously as an FSU fan I'm thrilled we got into the playoffs. My expectations don't really extend past that. I think Oregon is going to demolish all comers, and I'm not too upset about that. After all they've been the bridesmaid for so long. I'm excited to see Mariotta vs Winston
Next week: Well... there's the Army/Navy game, but other than that the bowls don't start until December 20th so I think I'll spend next week talking about those matchups

Even though football drives the bus, whose left that's really much of a football add? It's not realistic to think anybody is going to leave the SEC/B1G/Pac-12/ACC for various monetary and rights agreement reasons. Does BYU really move the needle that much for a FB conference? Who do you pair them with?
So IF (and yea, that's a big if) you thought you needed to add 2 schools just to get back to 12, you might as well add some decent hoops schools.
Really, it becomes more obvious every year that the Big 12 screwed the pooch by not adding Louisville a couple years back.

What other bowl games outside the CFP is everyone looking forward to most? I think Mississippi/TCU, Kansas State/UCLA and Georgia/Louisville all sound pretty intriguing in different ways. . .

Okay I was going to spread this out over two weeks, but I thought that Tolerability Index may not be up on Christmas Eve, So I'm doing all of them here. For this week, I'm going to grab each bowl game (or most of them anyways), kind of give a mini season-in-review, and then give my prediction on the winner. Hopefully this won't be too lengthy.
<b>Dec 20</b> Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl Utah (8-4) came out strong this year, beating Michigan, UCLA, Oregon State, and USC. Punter Tom Hacket won the Ray Guy award. Colorado State (10-2) had a great enough year that they lost coach Jim McElwain to Florida Pick: Utah
<b> Dec 22</b> Miami Beach Bowl BYU (8-4) may have had a better year had quarterback Tayson Hill not broken his leg four games into the season Memphis (9-3) is coming off a six-game winning streak and took their first title (AAC) since 1971 Pick: Memphis
<b> Dec 26</b> Quick Lane Bowl Rutgers (7-5) had a fairly successful first year in the Big Ten. Keep an eye on Wide Receiver Leonte Carroo North Carolina (6-6) beat Georgia Tech, Pitt, and Duke, but lost to just about everyone else Pick: Rutgers

<b>Dec 29</b> Russel Athletic Bowl Oklahoma (8-4) Quarterback Trever Knight has been cleared to play after suffering a neck injury against Baylor Clemson (9-3) will be without Freshman Quarterback Deshaun Watson due to ACL surgery Pick: Oklahoma

Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl Missouri (10-3) Will have Shane Ray back in the game after being ejected for targeting against Alabama. Minnesota (8-4) lost to TCU, Illinois, Ohio State and Wisconsin Pick: Missouri
Rose Bowl Florida State (13-0) not much more to say about Florida State that I haven't said already. Winston had 3559 yards and Freshman Running back Dalvin Cook exploded in the second half of the season with 905 yards Oregon (12-1) lost to Arizona, but beat them later in the championship game. Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariotta passed for 3783 yards Pick: Oregon
All State Sugar Bowl Ohio State (12-1) suffered their only loss against Virginia Tech early on and went through three quarterbacks: Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, and Cardale Jones Alabama (12-1) lost to Ole Miss. Heisman Candidate Amari Cooper received 1656 yards Pick: Ohio State

Tax Slayer Bowl Iowa(7-5) Suffered losses to Maryland, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Nebraska Tennessee (6-6) coach Butch Jones recently got a contract extension, but the Volunteers are a long way from regaining their glory Pick: Iowa
<b>Jan 3</b> Birmingham Bowl East Carolina (8-4) surprised us all early in the year, coming out of nowhere to spoil a couple of teams' seasons. Quarterback Shane Carden passed for 4309 yards Florida (6-5) Will Muschamps is out and Jim McElwaine is in/ Lets see if Quarterback Treon Harris can impress him Pick: Florida
<b>Jan 12</b> National Championship Game FSU/Oregon vs Ohio State/Alabama Pick: Oregon to win it all

Every single Big 10 team is an underdog in their bowl game. 8 bowl eligible teams, all dogs. How did Ohio State get into the final four again?

I can't imagine anyone would have an opinion on that...

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl Utah scored on their first three possessions, and quarterback Travis Wilson rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns and passing for another. Utah overwhelmed Colorado State in total yards 548 to 278 in their 45 to 10 victory. My Pick: Utah. Winner: Utah
Miami Beach Bowl Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch threw four touchdowns and rushed for three more in their defeat of BYU, 55 to 48, although he was picked off three times. The game went back and forth for most of the game, and despite a fourth quarter rally by BYU, Memphis tied the game in the last minute to send it to overtime. In the second overtime DaShaughn Terry intercepted BYU quarterback Christian Stewartin to end the game, resulting in a bench-clearing brawl. My pick: Memphis. Winner: Memphis
Quick Lane Bowl Rutgers had a good showing in their first Big Ten season, and dominated the first half of the game, shutting out UNC 23-0 at halftime. Running back Josh Hicks had 202 yards and a touchdown. Rutgers had three on the ground and two in the air. UNC had more passing yards but also turned over the ball twice, and despite a fourth quarter rally, could not catch up. Rutgers 40 to 21. My Pick: Rutgers. Winner: Rutgers.

I made the DC Meetup during the UGA game specifically because I'm pissed that Auburn goes to the Outback Bowl instead of us.

Hyundai Sun Bowl Arizona State lead most of the game unil Duke made a fourth quarter comeback. Demario Richaed scored three touchdowns. Duke went up by one in the fourth quarter until Kalen Ballage returned a kickoff 96 yards to set up the winning score in their 36-31 victory. My Pick: Arizona State. Winner: Arizona State.
National University Holiday Bowl The game went back and forth between USC and Nebraska, until USC built a 18 point lead. Nebraska fought back, completing a two point conversation, pulling in to within three points. On Nebraska's next possession, they decided to attempt a fourth down conversion, rather than kick a potential field goal. USC won 45-42. My Pick: USC. Winner: USC
Military Bowl Cincinnati started off strong but became overwhelmed by Virginia Tech's defense. Deon Clarke sacked quarterback Gunner Kiel, who left the game. Without their star player, Cincinnati succumbed to VT 33-17. My Pick: Cincinnati. Winner: Virginia Tech.
Duck Commander Independence Bowl Miami struck first with two field goals, but South Carolina's passing game took over, and Miami could never quite catch up. Quarterback Dylan Thomas passed for 284 yards with two touchdowns. Miami hasn't won a bowl game since 2006, and they didn't win this one either. 24-21, South Carolina. Miami RB Duke Johnson later announced he is entering the NFL Draft. Maybe he can win in the post season there. My Pick: South Carolina. Winner: South Carolina.
New Era Pinstripe Bowl The Nittany Lions, playing in their first bowl game since sanctions were lifted, scored first on a 72 yard touchdown pass fron Christian Hackenburg to Chris Godwin. Boston College then answered on a John Hilliman 49 yard run, to tie the game. In the second half, BC brought the lead to 21-7 with Tyler Murphy earning two touchdowns, one in the air and one on the ground. Hackenburg through two more touchdowns to tie the game, and each team kicked a field goal, sending it to overtime. BC scored a touchdown, but Kicker Mike Knoll shanked the extra point. Penn State took advantage, scoring a quick touchdown followed by Sam Ficken nailing the extra point to win. My Pick: Boston College. Winner: Penn State (and I don't mind being wrong on that one)
