It is all nice to talk about the films we love, but the feeling of burning hatred is just as special. So why not list your worst films of 2016.
The bad but no surprise: Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad. Not much to say that hasn't been said already. There are some interesting parts in these 2 plus hour piles of muck, but too far inbetween. DC didn't learn anything from Man of Steel and somehow became worse.
The king of mediocre: Civil War, it has good action, a plot that isnt too stupid, and acting that doesnt get embarassing. But outside of one sequence it is just ehhhh. It is about as perfect example of mediocre I can find in film. It passes time for 2 hours but fucking barely. There isnt anything truly terrible about it, but nothing that is worth the time or money put into it either.
The Disappointment: Rogue One. So many directions they could have took this film. It could have been a nitty gritty war film, a fun heist film, or just a traditional star wars film. But it is a half baked mix of all three. With a slog of a first half, underserved characters, and a monumental waste of acting talent, it is my least favorite movie of the year. It kinda pulls out of a rut by the last act, but by then it is too little too late. The damage was already done. It isn't one of the worst films of all time, still has decent visuals and some good action, but that just kinda rubs in the fact of how much better we could have got. Also one of the few films that I was fighting off falling asleep in the theater.
The worst film of the year: Assassins Creed. Just a dull dreary mess. I will have lots more to say elsewhere about this.

I haven't seen enough Dinesh D'Souza, Christsploitation, or shit-out Hollywood abominations like Max Steel to put together a remotely comprehensive worst-of list. (And unless this is the best movie year of the 2010s, I never will). However, I did see two movies I disliked:
1. Swiss Army Man. It's official: "original" is the new "feminist," a means that is being treated as an end. I found this film to be twee, smug, pointless, and boring.
2. The BFG. Never mind that seeing this was the worst moviegoing experience of my life, surrounded by chatting kids and chatting parents who had the temerity to call me out for shushing, this was one Roald Dahl story that was particularly unsuited to adaptation: a talky, whimsical digression with a skeletal narrative. Not to say that plot-light films can't work, but Steven Spielberg is no Louis Malle.

Hail, Caesar! was even more boring than Civil War. Star Trek Beyond was stupid, with some decent character moments that did not outweigh the inane plot and incoherent action. Zoolander 2 was offensively dreadful from start to finish.

I gave Suicide Squad a chance because some people said it was okay. I turned it off halfway through...so massively boring and disjointed.
The parts I DID see made no sense, narratively or otherwise. "Let's talk about all of these people that I have imprisoned who could work for us IF something bad happened. Oh wait, something bad DID happen because one of the people I had imprisoned got free and started turning an entire city into an army of blobface zombies...so let's send all the others after her now." "Good idea, Waller." WTF?!
Captain Boomerang continues to be one of the stupidest villains they keep using for no apparent reason. And WTF was up with Slipknot? "Oh by the way, here's a guy we didn't bother to introduce because A) his "ability" IS FUCKING STUPID (Able to climb anything? REALLY?), and B) we're going to kill him off immediately anyway."
EDIT - Apparently the Slipknot thing was an homage to the comics, where he was put through a similar situation but only lost an arm.

Assassin's Creed was an incredibly stupid and boring movie, and a waste of both Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender.
The Girl on a Train was bad and dull. I didn't even expect otherwise, to be honest.
Fantastic Beasts and Were to Find Them. Mediocre to say the most, with insipid characters and no story.

I saw a lot of disappointing movies last year in the cinema, so I'm just going to summarize in one sentence what I hated about them (with the exception of one) Captain Fantastic for celebrating unhealthy power dynamics between parents and children. Hail Caesar and Rogue One for not living up to their trailers. Ghostbusters for failing to write a script before shooting and handing a win to whiny MRA's. The Neon Demon and Nocturnal Animals for being so fucking dull and obvious. The secret life of pets for stealing the plot of Toy Story and then shitting all over it.
And finally Sing Street, a movie that I actually despise for its mediocrity. The main actor is miscast and his character unlikable as a result. The antics of his bandmates are fun and interesting at first before they are shunted aside to focus on his wooing of a female character whose main role in this film is to suffer and be coolly mysterious. The music is shit
### SEMI VAGUE SPOILERS### The brother's character is completely destroyed by helping them run away in probably the most dangerous way possible. But regardless of that I was actively rooting for the two of them to drown at the end.
