Waymo had to recall all of its driverless cars in Arizona today because they can't tell the difference between a road and a telephone pole.
One of these cars was called to a pickup, and instead of staying on the road, it drove into a small alley, and then ran straight into a telephone pole.
Waymo says it is going to update their mapping software to put a harder road edge at the edge of the driveable surface. And it put out a software update "that improves the automated driving system's response to poles or pole-like permanent objects."
Because apparently no one thought before to program the software to avoid permanent electrical and telephone poles?

Now we can lay off the airport staff that pushes people in wheelchairs. Thanks, roboticized future world!
