Now I'm going through the comments on the AVC obit, and [record swipey sound] ayatollahcm : "E. Buzz had been around long enough that enough folks (esp. on the East Coast) knew him and his wife IRL. In fact, to my understanding, our friend Sat was one of the first to know, was one of the first to visit and comfort Opera_Punk, and, at a meet-up in the New York/Connecticut area this last weekend, used it as an opportunity to toast his memory." ? Hmmm... have to text Sat about that...

Someone (not me) should write all this up. Even though nothing criminal occurred, it's probably one of the more illuminating catfishing events of recent times; could be a good article for some publication or other.

Apologies if someone else has already said this earlier in the 10 pages of posts but: Serial Season 3! (Or Starlee Kine's now-defunct Mystery Show.)

So interesting thing (well to me anyway) the last post from Opera_Punk was three months ago. I wonder if that's around the time he/she discovered that people were starting to unravel the whole charade. Not a peep since then (on Disqus anyway)

While the twitter account is deleted, she was in conversations as late as February 9th, i.e. the day before this broke (including one with me.)

Definitely a grey area, but I'm not 100% sure there's nothing criminal in situations like these. Taking advantage of people emotionally and dragging someone along with lies is pretty wrong, and in the case of someone who thought they were "close" to these people it could have caused a lot of stress and problems. I guess it would depend on the scale. Also using someone's image without their consent has to fall somewhere into illegality at some point, I'd guess.

Come to think of it, "Dom" was supposed to come to one of the handful of AVC meetups I held in NY over the years, but he couldn't make it at the last minute. Wasn't odd at the time, but most people who are that into a meetup usually show.

Yeah, is anything going to be done about how that woman's photographs were swiped and used without her permission?

Yeah, is anything going to be done about how that woman's photographs were swiped and used without her permission? Yup, if there's anything illegal in this, rather that just being deeply unpleasant, I'd say this is where it rests, because using someone else's image like this could be construed as a form of identity theft, especially if the intent behind it was to get stuff (someone mentioned sending DVDs as a sympathy present, so stuff was definitely gotten, even if it wasn't on a large scale). Whether that's a case anyone would find worth pursuing, or indeed whether there's a lawyer that would take it, is a separate matter. I can imagine the person whose picture was used (especially of her deceased father) might be in a position to do something about that (emotional distress caused by intentional, deliberate theft and misuse of images), but I don't think the rest of us would. Still since we have to prove our identities now, here's that selfie that Tellyfier and I took together when he visited Amsterdam.

Now Prole Hole you know I like to get a tad silly too but this is a serious thread and I think there's no room for such jackanapery. So here's the real photo of our meetup:

So, I mainly joined so I could share some of the worst examples of E Buzz / "Dom's" emotional vampirism I've seen from Facebook. (I'm working on the basis that E Buzz is the real person, whose real name may or may not be "Dom" (I'm pretty sure E Buzz Miller isn't his real name, though I'm not ruling anything our at this point) and that "Harriet" and "Ellie" ("Harriet's" predecessor) are the fakes). About six years ago, a few people from the AVC's Star Trek TNG comments set up a Facebook group. You know, to talk about Trek news and swap pictures of spaceships and share in-jokes about what Riker gets up to in the Holodeck. Yeah, yeah, I know, we're the coolest of the cool, right. "Dom" was an early member of the group, and not long after joining, despite her not being an active AVC commenter, he introduced his "girlfriend" "Ellie O'Brien" to the group. "Ellie", of course, was friendly and popular and lovely, and quickly became friends over FB with lots of people in the group. "Dom" broke up with "Ellie" (cue drama), but remained good friends with her, around the time that the character of "their" mutual friend "Harriet" / Opera Punk appeared on FB and AVC comments. Then, in November 2012, "Ellie" "died in a car crash". Here (with permission of the other party) are some of the FB private conversations "Harriet" had with one of the group members who was good friends (good internet friends anyway) with "Ellie". They're in order, but I've had to take a few out where real people have been identified by real names (and I can confirm the real-life existence of the person they're held with). "Harriet" is in grey.

Yeah, I am fucking pissed. Granted, still only on behalf of others who were hurt by this shit, but still. He's killed people off TWICE now at least for fake sympathy?
If there are legal charges available, I say pursue them at this point.

There was a predecessor to "Harriet"? Sweet baby cheeses. I think Liz n Dicksgiving's diagnosis of "Munchausen by Internet" is fairly apt, if not necessarily clinically accurate.

You know, I'd been sort of bemused by this whole thing while it was going on, because all I saw was whatever I stumbled across on AVC. The occasional thread hijacked by their back-and-forths, or the frequent "look at me/pay attention to me" dumb fake relationship drama bullshit -- it was more a nuisance than anything on a site as big as that. I mean, it was easy to roll your eyes at and tune out. But seeing this conversation, recognizing that there were people who did get emotionally invested and did engage far more deeply on social media... it's incredibly disturbing. Just the kind of reminder I needed how people were genuinely hurt by this emotional manipulation. Thanks, Lurky McLurk, for posting this stuff.
