I've never seen Torchwood but that is terrifying. I have, and it was. I'm amazed I finished a first season; I found myself utterly unable to finish a second. I suppose this isn't going to come as much in the way of a shock, but Big Finish's two "seasons" of Torchwood are better, more consistent and superior in just about every way to the televised version (Children Of Earth excepted, of course).

I have, and it was. I'm amazed I finished a first season; I found myself utterly unable to finish a second. Children of Men Earth (the third season miniseries) is worth watching. Capaldi is in it playing a government official, and it's one of the best performances I've seen out of him. I mostly know Children of Earth because people acted like ABC's The Whispers was a ripoff of it - when it was clearly and acknowledged that it was based on the classic Ray Bradbury story "Zero Hour." But that's the internet; the most recent and high profile iteration of a given story idea can seen as the original. You know while I've heard of Peter Capaldi for years I'm not sure I've seen him in anything beyond like half of an episode of that politics show he did. Checking IMDB, I probably saw his Peep Show episode. So he's somewhere in the middle of the recent Doctors in terms of my familiarity; Christopher Eccleston is the only one whose complete run I saw, and also have seen him in the odd TV show or movie (most notably his excellent role on HBO's Leftovers); with a fair bit of the David Tennant stuff and also his Jessica Jones appearance, and I'm fairly sure I've seen Matt Smith in nothing, even if he's easy to confuse with Eddie Redmayne.

I think I've actually seen more of Torchwood than Dr Who. Maybe? I know I saw the second season. And then I watched Children of Earth because it got good reviews. I really liked it. I watched Miracle Day which was bad and annoyed me. The premise seemed ripped off from a then-recent novel by Jose Saramago. Except his book was more fun.

I stopped Torchwood somewhere in the first season. I can outline the plot of every episode, though:
1. Alien Threat appears; 2. Alien Threat has sex with member of Torchwood team; 3. Cap. Jack has sex with Alien Threat and/or Torchwood team member; 4. Cap. Jack takes reasonable action to deal with Alien Threat; 5. Cap. Jack is told by Torchwood team member(s) that he's "a worse monster than Alien Threat."

I didn't even know Capaldi is leaving. As much as I would love Ayoade to be The Doctor, I want him free to direct movies. I love his movies. Hayley Atwell is a great choice, also I'd love Helena Bonham Carter, but that's wishful thinking.

A bunch of sources are reporting Kris Marshall. That is an almost impressively boring choice, and they deserve whatever flak they're going to get for it. He may not - he may be fine - but Chibnall or the BBC or whoever made the call does.

It's been years since I kept up with Doctor Who (I stopped halfway through Smith) but STILL got unreasonably annoyed when I saw this, and went "THAT GUY?!" out loud.

The story doesn't appear to have gotten picked up by any credible sources yet, so I'm holding out hope it isn't true.

Now, apparently Nerdist (via io9) is reporting that the latest rumor is Chewing Gum's Michaela Coel: I haven't seen her in anything, but she's automatically a more interesting choice than Kris Marshall.

No thoughts on the casting announcement?

No thoughts on the casting announcement? I think Whittaker's probably a good choice. I've only seen her in Broadchurch, but she was good in that, even if it's a very different part, and it implies she has a good working relationship with Chibnall. I like her much, much more than Kris Marshall, and part of my happiness with the announcement, besides that we finally have a non-white-male Doctor, is that it isn't Marshall. I'm optimistic, if slightly concerned about Chibnall, based on his Who and Torchwood episodes.

I think it might well be the best of all choices. Fun though it would have been, it would never have been someone like Tilda, and the other women that were big-name or big-chance(Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Olivia Coleman, Halley Attwell) never pan out (all of those took themselves out of the running but it didn't stop stories pouring out that it would definitely be them). If the bookies put someone at 3-1 odds on, it's not going to be them, so I was never all that concerned about the Kris Marshall rumours. What we have is someone who's well known enough to get "oh right, her!" reactions but not so well known that she carries a lot of baggage from other roles. She's also - and this is the single, one, and only thing that matters about the casting - a bloody good actor. So I'm a happy little robot today.
