Why are so many states determined to claim the mosquito as the “state bird”? Related: I've heard the saying "don't like the weather here? wait five minutes!" applied to at least six different states of varying regions and climates.

Every time I manage to convey something in another language to a native speaker I'm like "whoa, I just did that", especially if it's more than two or three sentences. Also I wonder if the native speakers mock my skills behind my back like my fellow merkins like to do to foreigners speaking their second(+) languages. (I'm not mad about it if they are, I just wonder.)

I wonder if Anita Sarkeesian has ever used the username "Antifa Sarkeesian" or a variation of it

Crash Test Dumbass Do you feel like you need someone to lead in and kind of switch your brain/warm you up for it? I’m always surprised how quickly I can slip back into Chinese but I can never start it on my own. I can usually switch in without difficulty, but switching back to English is sometimes a little harder. Also I keep getting my Italian and Spanish confused, especially in the copula for the past tense -- I keep using "avere" instead of "estar".

In between taking Spanish 201 and Spanish 202 I had to take 4 semesters of Vocal Diction. This required learning anywhere from 300-600 words in foreign languages. Memorizing them. We had to pass vocabulary exams. German, French, Latin and Italian and a smattering of Russian. The semester before I took Spanish 202 I had taken Italian Diction. Had to memorize 600 words of Italian.
The first day of Spanish 202 we were asked to write a paragraph involving words on the board. The words were written in English. One of them was "flower". I must have sat there for several minutes trying to remember the Spanish word for flower. I'm thinking, "Blume, fleur, flor, fiore, flora... Is it flor or flora? Is it actually flore? AAAAAAHHHHH!!!"
The first paper I wrote in that 202 class came back with no fewer than 20 red slashes telling me the word I'd used was actually Italian. My professor spoke 6 languages. She laughed and told me Spanish wasn't even her primary language. Portuguese was. She said the first speech she tried to give in Spanish ended up being a mix of Spanish and Portuguese.

I took German in high school, and a couple of years of Russian and a semester of Czech in college. Whenever I'm traveling abroad in Europe my first instinct is to speak some sort of Slavo-Teutonic pidgin.

I took five years of Spanish in high school and one of my undergrad majors was Italian, and in my Italian 101 class, I totally kept making Spanish mistakes. Extra hilarious because now I do the opposite. In one of my 300-level Italian literature classes, the teacher would start out in English until he hit an Italian name and then continue in Italian until a sentence or two later when he realized he wasn't speaking in English, which, technically, the class was to be taught in. Fortunately, most of us were fluent enough by then to understand him, but it was still pretty funny.

On the one hand, I recognize that the term "master bedroom" does have some potential slave connotations, and changing it affects me in no way whatsoever. On the other hand ... is this really the most important change to make right now? Even for Realtors? Maybe y'all could focus on systemic bias against BIPOC instead? The term didn't even come into common usage until the 1920s and I'm pretty sure it referred to the "master of the house" meaning the father (parents), as much as anything...

For all your Doonesbury (which often wasn't even printed on the comics page), Pogo, Bloom County iterations, and even Peanuts, this is still the most subversive thing ever printed on a comics page - maybe the most subversive thing ever syndicated because it was nominally aimed at children:

If you have any home fire extinguishers made by the Kidde company, you might google "Kidde fire extinguisher recall" and see if any of yours qualify for free replacement. I did a week or so ago and found that we had 3 that were recalled. I filled out a form online and got 3 brand new replacements. I still have to ship back my old ones (free shipping.)
They were all still full, but one has the safety pin missing, and I called the number on the paperwork to ask how to ship it back safely, and they said to just discharge it and send it back empty, no problem. The ones I had were several years old, so it's worth looking into if you have any.

"But I am frankly appalled by the president’s recent tweet seeking to postpone the November election. Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is a fascist. But this latest tweet is fascistic"
"Shit, I thought the libby lib libs were kidding with the racism and the emoluments and the Ukraine blackmail and the Russians paying to kill our soldiers and the gassing his own citizens, but threatening to postpone the election, that motherfucker gone TOO FAR NOW"

Looking up hairstyles for men with receding hairlines, and so far as I can tell the key to pulling off these styles is (to paraphrase the SNL sketch):
1. Look like Jude Law
2. Look like Sting
3. Don't not look like Jude Law or Sting

I never knew I was such a social butterfly until I spent 20 weeks without seeing anyone I know in person except for my wife and a couple gardeners. I never knew I was such an optimist until as recently as 6 weeks ago I thought life could go back to almost-normal by August, at least in Maryland.

I saw an ad online that started with a banner that read “drink your way to better skin” and tbh I stopped reading there because further details could only ruin that initial promise.

I'm kind of surprised that The Onion is still around and still funny, even as the rest of the Gizmodoverse have been reduced to zombies.

My favorite thing about TOC is that they have what I guess eventually turns into a video in the middle of every single article, and it starts with this picture of Cory Booker looking extremely "what the fuck is going on here": so it looks like Booker is very confused and concerned about whatever is going on in that particular article, which is a fairly appropriate reaction, to be honest.

So I usually use a separate browser for TI versus other internet browsing. Anyway, ads at the bottom of the page right now are for "Stand with President Trump" and "Collector's edition Lynyrd Skynyrd vinyl". That's definitely a niche, but I have no idea what made them put me in it- I blame watching 40 seconds of the Brad Paisley video in the cursed duets thread.

My phone has a limit to the amount of phone numbers that can be blocked, for some reason. I have to take numbers off the list to add more. The robocalls are really taking the approach of "choke their rivers with our dead".
