I've never seen a single episode of Lidia's show, but my mom got me one of her cookbooks because she watches it all the time. I have worn that thing out. I love Lidia! Watching her show is like watching your Italian grandma in the kitchen. She really knows her shit when it comes to regional Italian cooking, but unlike some other TV chefs *cough*Ina*cough* she's never smug or condescending about it. Lidia's great but holy shit what did she do to Joe that he's such a dick. "And now here's my son, Joe, to join me for the toas--" [JOE BASTIANICH enters from offscreen, ignores her, immediately begins eating]

American Masters on PBS just did an episode on Jacques Pepin, they're probably rerunning it for a while. yeah, it's kinda hard to have a thread like this and not mention Jacques Pepin. I was gonna be mildly annoyed if nobody else had. dude was Charles de Gaulle's personal chef. the recipes I've tried are simple and utterly sublime. as Shulkie said, anything PBS has is great. I love PBS, and it's the only other channel I would watch if we could pick it up on the HDTV antenna. (we did the whole Netflix only, drop cable thing a few years back.) edit: Lidia's great but holy shit what did she do to Joe that he's such a dick. "And now here's my son, Joe, to join me for the toas--" [JOE BASTIANICH enters from offscreen, ignores her, immediately begins eating] maybe that's an unconscious tribute to how good the food is? no time for chit chat, gotta dig in ASAP!

I never made a single recipe, but I always enjoyed reruns of Two Fat Ladies. Dry British humor gets me every time. Plus the fact that they were on location for many of the episodes.

Lidia always struck me as a complete hardass who mellowed a bit when she got to grandmother age. I had a grandmother like that - caused my parents no end of shit, but was wonderfully grandmotherly to us kids.

I actually thought their food looked kind of terrible a lot of the time, due more to things like lighting and production values and whatnot, but they were definitely fun to watch. They seemed like genuinely funny, nice people who loved to go around cooking for special events. Especially youth groups. Lidia always struck me as a complete hardass who mellowed a bit when she got to grandmother age. I had a grandmother like that - caused my parents no end of shit, but was wonderfully grandmotherly to us kids. That's Mrs. Snape's mom. Whenever she comments on what a nice and sweet grandmother she is to Baby Snape, it's always to say, "That is not the woman I grew up with!"

I think Marcus Samuelsson has a pretty interesting story and range of influences.

I think Marcus Samuelsson has a pretty interesting story and range of influences. I've read his memoir and seen him on Chopped as a judge, but I've never experienced his cooking, neither through his cookbooks nor his restaurants. What would you say are his strengths as a cook?

I did NOT like him as a judge. It might be how the show edits things, but it always seems to be unless a dish was truly awful, it'd be a judge praising something, a judge saying how much they disliked something, and then another praising and maybe enforcing the thing that didn't work. Marcus was always the negative judge. It just made me think that he hates everything.

I think he has an interesting story and I bet his food is amazing, but whether on Chopped or more likely Top Chef Masters, he always seemed to me like someone I wouldn't like in person. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Creative vegetarian dishes, I would say, and generally combining Ethiopian and Swedish influences in a unique way. Never been to his restaurants but may hit his spot in Harlem when I'm in NY this month.

But the talk itself was very captivating.

If you like a little live music, there's a jazz club in the basement and the menu is available down there, well worth it if that's your kinda thing.

He came across quite a bit differently in that then I've seen him come across in other appearances. Really down to earth and passionate, but not a dick about it.

Amazon Prime has Julia and Jacques: Cooking at Home and if you have access I highly recommend it. I've been watching a few eps every night after dinner and I'm laughing harder than I do at some of the comedies I watch. The souffle ep has a very frisky Child constantly needling Pepin and it's hilarious. "Oh, what cheese is this? Such an unusual color." "Eet's an Eenglish sheddair." "The English have such strange cheeses." "Duh you like eet?" " . . . No." I don't know why, but Child's bluntness had me laughing for a long time. I am a nerd.

Looks like Alton is bringing back Good Eats. Mrs. Snape texted me about this last Friday - while I was standing in line with Ron Howard Voice awaiting some amazing barbecue, in fact - and even though it was before the full Dragon Con announcement and I knew basically nothing, I still couldn't hide my boyish glee. This is pretty much the best TV-related news I can imagine short of Firefly restarting.

Will it be on Food Network again, or his own? I remember him saying he was doing an online/streaming show that was basically Good Eats, but that they couldn't call it that because Food Network owned that name.

Same production crew and everything. "Band back together" sort of thing. But he also said that for each episode they'll shoot additional content and edit it in for the web, so the web version will actually be the best, fullest version of the show to watch. Which is good since I no longer get the Food Network. Starting in 2018. Edit: It will be called Return of the Eats ... which, okay.

Netflix has Ugly Delicious, a new food show hosted by David Chang and Peter Meehan. Deep dive explorations of a dish, like Pizza, or Tacos. One of the episodes is about Cajun Crawfish and is shot here in Houston. Can't wait to watch it.
It's odd that Chang and Meehan are working together on this; didn't they have a falling out that was the reason Lucky Peach ceased publication?

I watched the first episode this weekend and thought it was, I dunno, okay? I'm confused by the concept, since there was absolutely nothing ugly about the food in the episode (pizza). And also I generally dislike David Chang as a presenter. I've no doubt his food is good - I know is ginger scallion sauce is good - but Chang as always struck me as a huge dick. Maybe a great chef, but someone who would be completely insufferable to be around, and this episode of television didn't convince me of anything different. I might actually hate him.

No, I'm with you. Chang is a dick. "It enrages me that people in this country love Italian food so much. Why is it so popular?" /orders Domino's The next episode on Tacos, he goes on a street taco crawl in LA with Gustavo Arellano and he looks so pissed off to be there. Basically I just concentrate on Meehan.

I don't know if I find him to be a dick, but I find him to have no personality. He seems bland, and like he doesn't want to be in front of the camera. When he's supposed to have enthusiasm toward something (like whatever show it was on Netflix with him cooking with other chefs), it seems like he's indifferent. While I've never gotten a chance to dine at any of his restaurants, I don't doubt he's an amazing chef. But I don't tend to like him as a host.

"The people who gave you that authentic experience probably don't think of themselves as authentic." That's the way I've always thought of it as well.
