Welcome to the debut thread of the Anniversary Film Club, the corollary to the Music Thread's Anniversary Record Club. To start, we'll be discussing films released in September of a bygone year. Please limit the anniversary to multiples of five or ten for simplicity’s sake. Also, please limit your selections to two films. September 2007September 2002September 1997September 1992September 1987September 1982September 1977September 1972September 1967September 1962 September 1957 September 1952 September 1947 September 1942September 1937September 1932
Be sure to scroll down to September selections for the years 1932-42, 1967-2007.
Capital-C-classic flicks, overrated blockbusters, underrated flops, and curiosities are all appropriate for discussion. While it is preferred that films get listed based on their release date in their country of origin, festival showings and limited and wide releases complicate this point, so we'll go by when it was released to the public. Any album nominated in a prior Anniversary Film Club is not eligible. Short films are not eligible. Thanks for participating and nominate away.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
L.A. Confidential (1997)

This is a very good idea:
The Ruling Class (1967)
The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)

I dig this a lot. One potential issue - it's a lot easier to find a free stream of an album than it is a movie. Also kinda wondering about the timing as there won't be a lot of time between when a film gets selected and the end of the month at this point. Solid idea though. That being said...
Amazon Women On The Moon (1987) - A compilation of 21 comedy skits formatted as if you're watching late night TV in the late '80s. Features a fairly huge ensemble cast with lots of cameos. Singles (1992) - Crowe's love letter to the Seattle grunge scene.

Interesting conceit ! Here I go... The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) : One of Bunuel's last movies, a low-key-surrealistic satire in which he shows he has lost none of his ferociousness. The Brothers Solomon (2007) : The other Will Forte box office bomb, but imho as funny and as deserving of cult status as Macgruber...

La Roue (1923) Merry-Go-Round (1923) At the risk of sounding like a broken record, only films from years of multiples of five or ten only. So 1922 and 1927 are fine, but not 1923. It's okay, it's the first thread so things'll be a little rough.

So we throw out two movies, and then vote on what movie we want to discuss?
I'll pick:
The Brave One (2007)--an odd attempt at an arty Death Wish starring Jodie Foster as an ordinary woman who, after her boyfriend is killed in a mugging, turns into a vigilante. But she's conflicted about it--sort of. Mr. Saturday Night (1992)--Billy Crystal decided he'd rather win an Oscar than host them, so he co-wrote, directed, and starred in this film about the rise and fall of a stand-up comic who was a lot like Billy Crystal, had he been born 40 years earlier. Even though Crystal was coming off City Slickers, it flopped, and costar David Paymer got the film's one Oscar nomination.

We are not all so talented mathematically as to automatically know such things. I'll try again in another post.

Also kinda wondering about the timing as there won't be a lot of time between when a film gets selected and the end of the month at this point. Solid idea though. This is an excellent point. Even setting streaming aside, not everyone has access to a library that carries basically everything, and even if they do it may be a request situation where you might have to wait a while. In interest of that: The Ruling Class is available on FilmStruck, which I believe is also available through Amazon with an extra subscription The Prisoner of Zenda is available…for rent…on…Google Play Video jesus MrsLangdonAlger Just listened to the soundtrack yesterday!
