A reminder that Clive James said Arnold Schwarzenegger looked like a condom full of walnuts.

Another of his was this about Barry Manilow. 'Everyone you know hates him. Everyone you don't know loves him.'

He's a really fantastic writer and it's a shame that his public profile nosedived after the 80's. A really great wit and by all accounts a lovely man.

Wow. I'm not as much of a Trekkie as others here, but still sad news. D.C. Fontana, 80 EDIT: Every time I add a link when phoneboxing, it turns the whole thing into hypertext. Such a pain. Fontana was pretty heavily responsible for all the Vulcan lore and most of Spock's background. We probably would have had a 'logical' Spock without her, but not a very deep one.

It's also the day John Lennon was murdered in 1980.

I remember my mother crying about that, though I'm not sure I understood the significance until later.

Sesame Street was a huge part of my early childhood as is probably the case of everyone born between the mid-1960s and the early 1990s (I know it's still on TV today but feel like from the mid-90s on it was a bit less ubiquitous for than it was prior to that) so this bums me out a lot. I actually watched Christmas Eve on Sesame Street with my daughter this past weekend and was reminded of just how good Spinney was as an actor. The fact that he was able to convey so much emotion while dressed in a weird yellow bird puppet costume is really kind of amazing.

In 1980 I was working in a TV shop, repairing VCR's. One day, in early December, we had the radio on, as usual. The guy at the next workbench says to me "They've played like 6 Beatles songs in a row, did somebody shoot John Lennon?" and we had a chuckle. It was maybe a week later when he actually was shot. I know that coincidence shook up my coworker, and I still get creeped out when I think about it.

Johanna Lindsey, author of dozens of extremely horny romance novels, has died. One of my colleagues here at the library attempted to find out how many books Lindsey wrote over her 42-year career. Google, as always, was indispensable in its helpfulness:

RIP Neil Innes, of Bonzos, Python, and Rutles fame.
I listened to the Rutles for the first time in ages a few weeks ago. Really good stuff, right down to the accuracy of the stereo separation.

Dammit. Loved pretty much everything he did. One of my favorites of his " Protest Song," which opens by saying "I've suffered for my music, now it's your turn."

Yeah that's a rough one, and so soon after we covered Archeology as well. Just a talent, such a supremely nice guy, and just an all round wonderful human being. Sad day indeed.

Damn, both Syd Mead and Vaughn Oliver. I've loved both of their artworks for much of life.

Got our first celeb death of the decade, folks: Jack "I'm Just a Bill" Sheldon, age 88. (Okay, he died on the 27th of last year, but whatever.) Kind of sad that he's going to go down in history as "that guy from the edutainment song about electoral procedure," but at least he had a sense of humor about it.

Holy fuck! Buck Henry An underrated part of SNL's early seasons, Get Smart, and Quark, which I definitely enjoyed more than it deserved.

I would have loved to have seen Buck Henry and Charles Grodin in a series of road movies, ala Hope and Crosby. Or buddy cop movies. Or taking turns reading the phone book.

Iran May Have a Fleet of Communist Killer DolphinsI'm thinking Buck Henry has pulled a prank from beyond the grave, highlighting one of the, um, less-regarded entries in his writing career.

He also wrote the lyrics. What other band drummer can say that?

Between celebrideaths and family stuff, this has been a horrible, horrible start to the year. At least we haven't nuked anything yet this year.

RIP Terry Jones from Monty Python. Finest nude organist this country ever produced. Well, that Wales ever produced. Well, shit. I knew his health had been failing for a while, but he was such a foundational part of my childhood and my sense of humor and it's still sad to see him go.
