Also I just got tickets to a photo op with Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, so I will get to complete my Clinton collection. Pokelinton! Gotta snap 'em all! (I ALMOST shook hands with Schwarzenegger on his tour for governor. It was a big crowd for Modesto, so he shook the hands of the guy to the right and left of me. )

You mean Terry O'Quinn, from LOST? I mostly know him from that (and the short lived 666 Park Avenue and his brief stint on Emergence) but he seems like a cool guy. I don't know if I would have talked to him either though. Wil ... based on following him on Twitter before he left it, seems like a decent enough dude but very very sensitive to criticism. Probably for the best that he left Twitter. I did once follow Jared Leto around the Whitney art museum, but I didn't talk to him and I was trying really hard not to be a stalker weirdo (it was pretty busy, a new exhibit had just opened, I just wanted to confirm it was him) Yes, I do mean Terry O'Quinn, thanks! I didn't Google it the way I should have to get his name right. I was with a friend who actually was the one to notice him (there is a trend of me not noticing my surroundings) and she was like, "If anyone asked me for a photo before I had coffee, I'd probably stab them. He must be a really nice guy."
I wasn't even criticizing Wil! He picked a fight with me over something completely random (a comic-book writer reblogged someone else's post of a bunch of Captain Marvel fanart that wasn't sourced at all, I replied to the OP to ask her to credit those artists because I knew several of the works on sight and who created them, and he decided I was chastising the comic-book writer when I clearly was not) and he was super nasty about it, so I destroyed him. I'm not bragging, I swear. I just wasn't about to let a total stranger with a huge social media following rip into me for no reason other than that he can't read OR be nice about it. Also, he's a major supporter of Chris Hardwick, so I don't think he's a decent person at all.
Just making sure there wasn't another Terry Quinn I didn't know of And yeah, that's just dumb (to pick a fight with you) and you're right about the supporting Chris Hardwick thing...

Damn. Wil is the only member of the TNG main cast (OK, not Colm Meaney either; sorry ayatollahcm) I have yet to meet. I hope he's not a dick. (Most of the cast are awesome: Jonathan Frakes complimented my beard, Patrick Stewart is pocket-sized, and I will not hear a word said against LeVar Burton.)

So awesome. I hope we can return to the days when Nobel Prize winners are covered in the celebrity rags like Niels Bohr and Max Planck were in the '20s. I just finished the new Sam Kean book, this one about the mission to thwart a Nazi atomic bomb. Apparently Bohr was a real blabbermouth who didn't pay attention and was easily recognized by his huge noggin. There's a documentary about Los Alamos and the development of the atomic bomb that has some surprisingly funny stuff in it, the best of which is the recounting of J. Robert Oppenheimer and Niels Bohr scouting the Los Alamos location, which was a boys' ranch and school in the '30s. Apparently, when visiting, they passed themselves off as "Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones" (Bohr was Danish). The doc interviews a former student from the ranch, who says "we all played along but we knew who they were. Their photos were in our science textbooks."

Oh, my cousin works on that show Emergence. Allison Tolman is apparently an odd/slightly difficult person to work with, and Clancy Brown is apparently (sadly) racist.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot Bill Nye! I met him several times as a kid since his show was filmed in Seattle and he did events at schools and the Pacific Science Center what I now realize was all the time since meeting him was a normal occurrence among most kids my age. The better marker for my generation back home is how well you know him.

I met Ted Allen, original Queer Eye member and host of Chopped, at a food festival in Dallas. He hosted a cooking instruction seminar and stumped for Mondavi wine for a little bit. After it ended he just hung out and welcomed anyone to come up and chat. He was very friendly. I asked him about a duck recipe I'd seen him do on Food Network one time.
I also "worked" with Buddy Valastro, i.e. the Cake Boss, in that I briefly interviewed him for work about 4 years ago, but I think Ted Allen is more famous.
My dad once played blackjack with Richard Karn, who played Al on Home Improvement.

My dad was a fairly high ranking lawyer in the Washington state attorney general's office, so I've met a senator (Slade Gorton) and a governor (Christine Gregoire), both of whom were my dad's boss at some point. There's also a picture of me with then-Virginia governor/future Virginia senator Mark Warner at the Harkin Steak Fry during my brief stint with the college Democrats. I've also "met" Barack Obama, in the sense that I stood about ten feet behind him on stage at a rally at my college. I've spoken on the phone with and almost worked for Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted, who's extremely famous in sociological circles but not at all famous anywhere else. And...yeah, that's it. Pretty sad. Oh, my dad once met with Dune author Frank Herbert, who was applying for a permit or seeking a legal opinion or something. Herbert was reportedly cranky and mildly put out that my dad had no idea who he was at the time.

Wil Wheaton picked a fight with me on Tumblr once and lost, because he has the reading comprehension of a paving stone and I wasn't about to let him get away with talking to me the way he did. When he was on Twitter, he blocked me there, even though I never interacted with him, or even mentioned him (I went back and searched just to be sure). I guess I’m on some list because of the people I follow?

Just to tick that Scottish stereotype box, Billy Connolly.
Also the poet Edwin Morgan. Now I know you probably have no idea who he is/was (he died a couple of years back) but he's a simply amazing poet and I met him (twice!) when I was 18 and he made a profoundly good impression on me, warm, witty, absolutely charming and very encouraging towards a bumbling and rather star-struck teenager. An awesome poet who was awesome.
The band Biffy Clyro supported my band on the very last gig we ever played.

I was recalling some of the people TWBE has met. Back in college we had a hotel at the edge of campus (basically the only nice place to stay in town) with a restaurant/bar and event space, and smaller-time comedians, singers, etc would perform there. One weekend TWBE went to a comedy show, sat down at the bar afterward, and the comedian who'd just performed sat down next to him - it was Retta. (Donna Meagle from Parks & Recreation - but this was circa 2004 so she wasn't famous yet.) So, they had a drink together and talked! I am kind of envious of this because she seems really cool.
He also interned at The Bob & Tom Show (a syndicated comedy morning radio show out of Indianapolis) his junior year and got to meet a variety of athletes and comedians who came through, but I'm not sure who the biggest names were.

OH, comedians I've at least seen in person and been targeted by during their routine: Gallagher (in Vegas pre-meltdown but mostly post-TV career) and Lavell Crawford (Huell from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul), both very funny performances.

Back in the early 1990s, my parents left us kids with a babysitter and went to a live benefit performance in Baltimore by the cast of Homicide: Life on the Street, somehow winding up in the second row. Richard Belzer made fun of my dad upon learning he was a pharmacist, and the next morning was the first time I learned you can burst a blood vessel in your eye from laughing too hard. We have pictures of my parents with many of the actors. I should dig them up and digitize them just for fun. It'd be dope if they had a photo with Andre Braugher, but I can't recall if we do.

I've actually had decent conversations with LeVar Burton and DMC. Drew Magary called me a GLORY BOY. I warmed Julie Newmar's cold hands at a convention. I think I told my 2017 NY Comic Con story already that involved a cranky friend? I also got spontaneous hugs from LeVar and Linda Hamilton, and had to explain library science to Thomas Dolby. Neil Patrick Harris, Natalie Dormer, Jason Momoa, and Lupita Nyong'o are all breathtakingly attractive.

Pretty sad. Oh, my dad once met with Dune author Frank Herbert, who was applying for a permit or seeking a legal opinion or something. Herbert was reportedly cranky and mildly put out that my dad had no idea who he was at the time. Oh! I met (now-deceased) former Maryland governor William Donald Schaefer when I was in culinary school. The culinary and baking lab building is smack in the middle of Little Italy, and every other Friday my dad would pick me up from class and we'd go to lunch at our favorite restaurant there (Chiapparelli's - the house salad is so good and can feed like four people). One day, we noticed him as we were leaving and he chatted with us for a good ten or fifteen minutes. Marylanders know him as something of a flamboyant figure, but he was just there by himself enjoying his lunch. Apparently, he went to law school with my dad's uncle and was good friends with him. A very nice man, and I'm glad I got to meet him. Then-mayor of Baltimore, the now disgraced Sheila Dixon spoke at my culinary school graduation in 2008. She showed up late, left immediately after her speech, and never once looked up from her notes as she talked. Also, my dad worked as a pharmacist in Owings Mills in the early-to-mid 1990s. His customer base included most of the Baltimore Stallions CFL team - one player whose name I cannot remember at the moment gave us 50-yard-line tickets to see them play at the old Memorial Stadium a few times, including the 1995 division final game against the San Antonio Texans. They went on to win the Grey Cup and are still the only American CFL team to do so. Another notable customer of his was Barry Levinson's mom, who would show him pictures from movie premieres and such. One customer when he worked in a pharmacy in Baltimore city was Blaze Starr, burlesque star and one-time paramour of Louisiana governor Earl Kemp Long. She owned the Two O'Clock Club, a famous strip club on The Block. (I used to walk by it all the time on my way from the aforementioned culinary/baking lab to the academic building, which was also on The Block. I'm still annoyed with every single person on the crew of The Wire for getting in my damn way constantly.) My dad still talks about her with admiration and fondness - Ms. Starr was apparently quite a nice woman.

I waited on Mr Rogers and his sister when I worked at a Chinese restaurant during college. He was very, very nice and a good tipper too. I managed not to blurt out something awkward about how much he meant to me as a child, but even so I'm sure I had a dumb smile on my face the whole time.
Sophomore year of college HR from Bad Brains came to the shitty punk rock house that I lived in with my dopey punk rock friends, but only because we had weed. He was a jerk, slipping in and out of a faux-rasta accent and not deigning to make eye contact with anyone, but the star-struck punks were mesmerized. Okay so was I, but that night really took the shine off of my love for the band.

He sounded genuinely amused and was rather charming and slightly self-conscious.

When I was in tech school, I had a job running the lights and sound board at their then brand new performance center. Somehow, as part of my duties there, I ended up escorting Bill Veeck, the former owner of the Chicago White Sox, across campus to the cafeteria so he could get a sandwich. I remember he had a peg leg. I don't mean a prosthetic limb, I mean a wooden peg, worn down smooth, like a pirate might have. During some election year in the early 80's, the computer accessory factory I worked at saw several politicians running for office pass through. Then Governor Big Jim Thompson is the only one I remember. I had been out drinking late the night before, and I overslept, woke up hungover, didn't have time to shower, and wore the same clothes I had worn the day before. These were a red long underwear shirt and bib overalls. They lined the entire plant up and marched us past to get a handshake and a plea to vote for him. I don't think I made a good impression, but his bodyguards didn't wrestle me to the ground, so I consider that a win. During my years as a satellite TV dealer, I attended several national trade shows. There were often celebrities there, sometimes TV or movie personalities, but the groups that were around most often were wrestlers and porn stars. I have many autographed photos from that era. I had a very nice conversation with King Kong Bundy (he liked my Aloha shirt, and said all the dudes in suits creeped him out). I saw Andre the Giant and got an autographed photo. He was taller sitting down than I was standing up. He had a very long line and was signing as fast as he could to try to get all his fans photos, but that didn't give him any time to interact.
I had a nice chat with Gloria Leonard, who was very personable and witty, while the aisle past her booth was clogged with people in line to get a free photo or something from Vanna White. Ms. Leonard impressed me telling me about the business model for her "Hot Shoppers Hour" show on satellite TV. At the Hospitality Suite for some satellite TV stroker channel, at some trade show in Vegas, Sunset Thomas talked to me for maybe a half hour. She was very pleasant and we had a nice conversation, but she was also pretty strange.
The most entertaining conversation I ever had at at one of these shows was with Ron Jeremy. The guy is very sharp and funny as hell. He seems to know absolutely everybody. I was once at a friend's party at some big hotel in Owensboro Ky, and Tanya Tucker was playing a show in the theater in the hotel. Somebody got close enough to her to invite her to the party. We were rampaging out in the hallway when the elevator doors opened, Tanya looked out, saw the chaos, pushed the "down" button, and disappeared. (Probably a smart move. Later that night I watched from a window in the hotel room while several of the party goers sneaked aboard a boat docked on the river below, and attempted to steal it.) I once got to speak for just a minute to R. Lee Ermey, and asked him about some charity work he used to do each year in Chicago. He seemed like a really nice, down to earth guy. I once shook hands with Dick the Bruiser after a wrestling match in Decatur Il, where he defeated Bulldog Brown. That might be my most treasured celebrity encounter.

Couple more geriatric punk rock run-ins. Had an interaction with one of the Sex Pistols when he politely excused himself to get around me to get to the performers' area. Seemed like a nice, polite gentleman. And I came "this" close to getting to give Wreckless Eric directions in Midtown Detroit once. He ended up asking a small group who were walking a few feet ahead of me and no doubt had no idea who he was (he and I did speak briefly later that evening, but it's not the same).
