Mostly, I prefer no straw. But in the event that I am driving, then I will go for the plastic straw. Drinking and Driving. It can kill a planet.

My standard "cup" for drinking anything at home is one of these tiki tumblers with a built-in, reusable/dishawasherable straw. I love them.

Most drinks I would vote to drink straight from the cup.
For anything with ice, I prefer a plastic straw. I have a cup of ice water going at the house pretty much all the time, and for that I use plastic straws that are kept on after gas station fountain soda purchases. I don't pay attention to how much use I get out of any one straw, but it's weeks and sometimes months of daily use. And when I do replace them it's rarely because they've become defective. After so many weeks using the same straw day in day out, it just starts to feel like I should replace it.

I only use straws when I'm driving, or have gotten a fountain drink to-go and was driving with it at some point. Metal or some sort of reusable hard plastic/poly is better than any disposables.
