Look, I admit that the vast and overwhelming majority of modern country music is just terrible pop fluff dressed up with the bare minimum amount of twang and banjo to make it qualify as "Country MusicTM", but in between the huge mounds of awful crap, every now and then an artist manages to slip a great song or two into the mix. As an eighth generation Texan, country music is in my blood, so it kind of hurts to see the storied genre of Hank, Willie, Waylon, and so many other greats reduced to pop claptrap by the likes of Taylor Swift and her ilk. That's why when a good song comes out, I feel it needs to be recognized. So here are a few great country songs that have been released in the last few years.
NOTE: The Kacey Musgraves song linked below is pretty poppy, but it has a fairly progressive message which is so rare in country music these days that I felt I should include it. I like the song despite itself.
Randy Rogers Band - In My Arms Instead
Miranda Lambert - White Liar
Eli Young Band - Even if it Breaks Your Heart
Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow
Turnpike Troubadours - Wrecked

Great idea!
I don't know if they count, but I saw
and
at a fest a couple of years ago, and it made me realise that there was actually good country music (or close enough to country for me).

Some more:
Band of Heathens - LA County Blues: Who wouldn't like a country song about Hunter S. Thompson?
Pistol Annies - Hell on Heels

I wish there was a link, but the band doesn't even exist anymore. Still, the song "Trick Heart" by Stories Below was great. A sampling of the lyrics:
My grandfather, he was silver and he had a bad thumb But could hold it in the air and tell if the rain'd come And he'd tell you and it would always rain on time An injury as a boy received that never healed right
Well me, I've got my own injury It's that last thing that she gave to me Well, maybe it's broken, maybe it's strained Maybe it's triggered by the comin' of the rain Maybe it healed wrong, maybe it turned hard But I'll feel it when she'll go, when the wind blows I feel it comin' on in my trick heart

It's a pretty great album. My favorite song at least in terms of musicianship is honestly probably "Dick in Dixie" but considering how freely he uses "f*ggot" and "c*nt", I was pretty positive it wouldn't be appreciated, which would be totally understandable.

I realize this perspective will likely be scoffed at by veteran country fans, but I really, unironically enjoy Cherlene, the country album tie-in to the TV series Archer.
Favourite track:

Shovels and Rope are so awesome and kicked so much ass live.
This would be the big single, but they have a lot of stuff uptempo as well:

Jamey Johnson's entire catalog is pretty reliably excellent.

Today I heard a modern country song that rhymed with "Chevy" with "levee." In my opinion, it should be a criminal offense for anyone other than Don McLean to do this.

Eli Young Band - Even if it Breaks Your Heart
Why, yes, that is a great song. Here's the original, by Will Hoge, which is even better. Eli Young isn't in any way responsible for this gem, and in my opinion, the original is miles ahead of their cover.

Some kinda offbeat country:
They say ambition is an enemy of greatness And greatness is an enemy of fame When I pick up my guitar And I try to write a song I think of what my mentor used to say: "Who fuckin' gives a rat's ass, Steve? Just write a love song Cause they'll keep your belly full And your wallet lined Don't bother these nice people With your sad sack songs If you ask me I think they're just a waste of time."

I'm far from a seasoned country vet but here's some recent twangy shit I'm super into.
This has become my de facto summer album for 2014. It threw me for a loop when I found out these ladies are from Sweden.
These guys might be a little more folky than you're looking for, but hey, what can you expect from Portland.
Aubrey Plaza's in this video. That should be enough, but the music's great too. Former drummer of Fleet Foxes, but don't hold that against him.

First off, the fact that someone else appreciates The Eli Young Band and Van Zandt is music (ha ha ha) to my ears.
Secondly, here's some recent country songs I'm a big fan of:
I seriously love Dierks Bentley, nobody can do a melancholy tune like that man. And Brad Paisley, well, that music legend is one of my favorite artists ever!

The Old Country reminded me of a true artist I first learned about from my dad: the thread has a major lack of Junior Brown.

I'm a fan of The Sadies, myself. "Tremendous Efforts" and "Darker Circles" are both great.

After many years of intending to, I listened to Chris Smither recently, specifically "Drive You Home Again." More blues than country, though it should appeal to anyone who enjoys the latter. Really lovely album.
