I finally got to see Torres and Hop Along at CMJ in October, both acts were as excellent as I had hoped. I'm slated to see Fucked Up, DIIV, White Lung, Guardian Alien, and LORDO play 285 Kent's last show next weekend, St. Vincent in February, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds in May. I think this is my annual run of shows for the year, unless something cheap catches my eye or an act like Daft Punk or Tom Waits decides they're going to tour again.

On a much smaller scale, I just bought tickets to see Dave Lombardo playing with John Zorn at a tiny club in NYC. I think my earplugs are going to need their own earplugs. I saw them years ago (with Fred Frith and Bill Laswell), you are right. I felt bad for my mother who had gone with me, even though she kept telling me she liked it. Enjoy, it should be amazing!

I generally have to travel at least 2-ish hours to see a good show (either to Athens, Atlanta, or Asheville, usually). However, a local club has already booked a few really good shows in the next few months:
1/20 - Jason Isbell & Holly Williams 2/27 - Blowfly 3/6 - Those Darlins 3/8 - Jonathan Richman

I just got back from seeing the Stanley Clarke Trio. It was really good, although I wish he'd done more than one electric number. I thought his drummer on this tour was really awesome (I didn't catch his name, but he's only 19)

I'm so excited. My mother wisely said she'd be happy to hear all about it after the show.

Saw Abigail Adams a couple of days ago. Pretty good if you are in a Black Metal mood.

I had to miss Hilary Hahn and Hauschka in Minneapolis this past weekend, but I started my 2014 concerts with Tim Hecker (and Oneohtrix Point Never and 2 openers who were decent) at Lincoln Hall.
I had seen them at an art museum in that same Liquid Music series in Minneapolis (which a friend's sister runs, I just discovered). The room was designed to hold their sound, so it was just a perfect acoustic experience with a bunch of highbrow types.
Lincoln Hall? Criminy, you all. I was in the front row and got a full-body beating from the sound in total darkness. The room was tremorous. The crowd was totally prepared for the sonic massage and was so into it. He's in his prime and it was 1 of my 10 favorite concert experiences. I'm Lutheran and have been to a lot of organ performances, but I'm actually out of sorts today from the visceral nature of the show.

I'd like to go see Of Montreal tomorrow night, but they're playing in Macon, which is about 2.5 hours away, most of which will be rural back roads that I'm not familiar with. I can't afford/justify getting a hotel room that close to home, and it's not like Of Montreal doesn't play at least 3 or 4 shows in Athens a year, but still, I haven't been to a good show in a long time and I'd like to check it out. What do you guys think?

That last 285 show was something else. So much jubilant calamity in one tiny shoebox. LORDO has potential to be an awesome band. Guardian Alien was all about texture, but that seemed to work for them, if only in a live setting. This was my second time seeing White Lung and they absolutely killed it. Then DIIV got on stage and actually killed it, "it" being the momentum and vibe. They made me realize how sweaty and disgusting I was at that point, so things got dire quickly. Fucked Up brought it back though. Upon finishing their set Damian apologized for such an awkward conclusion (it was just one last Fucked Up song, if you catch my drift). So the band decided to end with a cover of "Blitzkrieg Bop." Needless to say, that went over well with the crowd.
St. Vincent's up in about a month, which I'm increasingly psyched for. I just wish she wasn't playing Terminal 5. I don't hate that venue like most people do, but it's a pain in the ass to get to and potentially betrays the vibes I associate with St. Vincent. That being said, I have no doubt that she's badass enough to fill the space with her perfect guitar tones.

I saw Jason Isbell last night. I knew from his work with Drive-By Truckers that he was a great guitarist but the guitarist in his band was outstanding as well, as was his entire band. The only real negative was when he played "Elephant", a really quiet really sad song, and drunk assholes kept shouting the entire time. But oh well, what can ya do. He played every song I would've wanted to hear, and they closed with a spot-on cover of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking".
His opener was Holly Williams, who I didn't find out until last night is Hank Williams Jr.'s daughter. She was fine, very much straight-ahead country kind of sound, not my thing but not bad for that sort of thing.

Taking Back Sunday and The Used - March 27
Awww yeah.
Also, I saw the Dum Dum Girls on the 28th and Mac DeMarco on the 29th. Both were very, very good.

I'm going to see them next month! I don't know much of their music, but it seemed like it would be a great show.

I haven't found all the footage for either of the nights, but here is a bit from the second night of the first U.S. shows Current 93 performed. Yes I was there. Some friends and I drove from mid-Ohio to NYC and back all in 36 hours to see it. I love you Rose.

I haven't been to a show since I saw They Might Be Giants back in March. Lack of funds, and the fact that I have to drive to Columbus or Cincinnati to see anyone worthwhile means I don't see many shows these days. Last year, I only saw two shows, St. Vincent (great) and Noel Gallagher (surprisingly good). Random question--when/where did you see St. Vincent? I saw her at Bogart's in Cincinnati in May of 2013, and it was probably one of the better concerts I've been too.

Saw The Hold Steady last night for the 4th time. It was kind of hard to get jazzed for some of the songs I've heard all 4 times, but it was all worth it for the 2 rarities they busted out, "Citrus" and "How A Resurrection Really Feels." The new songs sound pretty cool too.
Things got interesting on the way home - got caught in a nasty snowstorm, took the wrong ramp, and just gave up and parked the car in a parking garage downtown, about halfway home, then switched to the bus. So I gotta drive home from work today, weather pending again.

Booked a couple of exciting gigs for later in the year: Current 93 (in a church!) in May and Clint Mansell in a rare UK appearance in October.
