Because clearly the Multiverse just wants me to get out more, I find that Juno Reactor are playing a rare UK gig in August - at a festival in Bradford, which is a mere hour away.

Firefly 2014 has a pretty good lineup going, and Dover isn't more than two hours away. No way I'm going to spend three solid days there; hopefully Beck and OutKast will be on the same day.

I got tickets to Swans! Also, Son Lux. This is shaping up to be a fine year of gigs - hoping next to score Juno Reactor and Demdike Stare, already got Current 93, Clint Mansell & Tinariwen.

Priiiiiiince! I just saw Prince! It was awesome, it was a smallish venue (1,200 people), I was 3 metres from the stage! Can't wait for the next one.

I haven't been to a show since I saw They Might Be Giants back in March. Lack of funds, and the fact that I have to drive to Columbus or Cincinnati to see anyone worthwhile means I don't see many shows these days. Last year, I only saw two shows, St. Vincent (great) and Noel Gallagher (surprisingly good). Random question--when/where did you see St. Vincent? I saw her at Bogart's in Cincinnati in May of 2013, and it was probably one of the better concerts I've been too. In Columbus, at the Newport Music Hall. That's probably my favorite venue in the area. Do you mean May of 2012? That's when I saw her and she played Cincinnati the next day.

Really glad no one was around to hear that. Oh my goodness, I wish I could have done that. Please universe, make that happen for me soon.

I got my tickets to see Afghan Whigs in May! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! I was in the middle of a really hardcore exercise class when they went on sale, so I had to duck aside to order them. I could barely move my arms, let alone type on a phone-sized keyboard, but no adversity was going to keep me from my Whigs tickets!

So, after many months of anticipation, I finally saw Neutral Milk Hotel last night, and it was magical! Elf Power opened, and they were pretty good. I find it interesting though that I am mildly familiar with some of Elf Power's older work and even bought one of their CDs as recently as 2006, they only played one song that I was familiar with. But still, they were entertaining enough.
But damn, Neutral Milk Hotel, man! Mangum walked out onto the stage solo, his face covered with a thick beard and wearing a cap, and immediately launched into "King of Carrot Flowers." As he played and sang, the rest of the band casually walked out onto stage and joined in, and from that moment forward, I was mesmerized. I was curious if they were pretty much only going to play songs from In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, but they did end up playing quite a bit from On Avery Island as well. I think the most stunning thing about watching them perform is the amount of sheer talent and creativity that they put into their music. Many of them are multi-instrumentalists, and watching them jam on all kinds of items was a joy. This was especially the case with watching Julian Koster play the singing saws. That type of thing amazes me, and he is truly great at it. It is a testament to Mangum's songwriting genius that all of their material holds up as well as it does almost 20 years later. It all sounds just as fresh today as it did in the 90's, and its influence on indie rock has been immeasurable. And, as predicted, I was not able to keep from tearing up during "Two Headed Boy Pt. 2", but was not the blubbering mess I thought I would be.
So good. So, so good. My favorite concert in quite a long time. I hope they make new music. It's been a long time coming.

I saw Marcy Mays' new band, Night Family, last night. They were great, but what else would you expect from the leader of Scrawl.

Prince is awesome, but I'm wondering what band this was! It was a band called Greensky Bluegrass. Apparently they're from Kalamazoo, which I don't think is a hotbed for bluegrass music. They weren't bad, but as a non-bluegrass fan I lost interest about halfway through the set.

I like newer more progressive bluegrass, but the really traditional stuff does get old to me real fast. Actually, on that note, the local bluegrass festival announced that the headliners this year are going to be the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show, so I'm pretty excited about that.

I did see Old Crow last summer at a festival having never really heard them before and really enjoyed it. If that's progressive bluegrass, then that's what I'm more of a fan of.

Well that's my definition of progressive bluegrass. I'm sure there's probably bands playing banjos with feather dusters who would turn their nose up at that definition.

Went to see of Montreal, the gig started lively and funky, did a small detour with the quiet songs from the latest album, and returned to the "fun part of the gig" with more disco-funk. Overall amazing gig (enough to make me forget I was missing St. Vincent on the other side of town), but why did it have to be so loud? This time I hadn't forgotten my earplugs, but it was absolutely perfect with them

It seems to me a lot like biking without a helmet or driving without a seat belt.

Hugs and Hisses I try always take them with me just in case, unfortunately two of the times I had forgotten them were The Men (who managed to be louder than the band they were opening for, they also thought it would be fun to have the songs all flow into each other, the result was an undistinguishable mush) and Prince (who at least sounded great balance-wise etc. just way too loud). There are times when I'll wear them and the sound will feel a little muffled, but for of Montreal I just couldn't believe how perfect it was with them, and it's not like it's the kind of music where you'll have some dumbass trying to explain to you that if you're not endangering your eardrums you're listening to it wrong (or if they were there they didn't feel the need to let me know). I also often have a look around to see how many people wear some, and it's often surprisingly very few people, even at My Bloody Valentine where they give them to you when you get in and tell you you'll need them. I guess people are sometimes not very smart (I did once meet someone who told me she didn't wear a helmet when biking as it messes her hair, but it was totally ok as she's never going very fast and is generally careful...).

They're playing Athens on 3/29, I'm hoping to see them then.

I had my first concert dud last week. I went to see Russian Circles at a club that I knew has a bad sound system. I didn't think it would matter that much. It did. I ended up leaving early because all I could hear was driving bass and drums. That's NOT what I listen to Russian Circles for, thank you! The worst part about it all was I sat through both opening bands, one of which was laughably bad (and the singer kept making eye contact with me just as I'd start to lose it), only to leave four songs into the set I'd came to see.

Big Ramones fan, but due to age issues, I missed seeing them before they dissolved. Last night their former drummer, who still uses the stagename "Richie Ramone" despite the fact that he quit over money disputes well over twenty-five years ago, played a gig at a small dive bar in Detroit (the kind of place that puts ashtrays on the bar even though smoking in a bar is banned in the state). Not as bad as Hugs and Hisses' problem, but terrible sound. I blame terrible room acoustics and a bad tech guy (the last awful-sounding show I saw was at another place I've seen him work) rather than placing all the blame on the band, but there were problems there too. Richie himself did most of the lead vocals, sometimes while also drumming, sometimes not and is not a strong singer. He was also clearly very exhausted by the end of the evening despite the fact that his headline set was under an hour. A few new songs (he was selling a new solo album) but mostly a set of Ramones songs, both classics and deeper cuts (many of which were written, recorded, and released before he joined the band). It was a cheap show, but hearing your favorite songs reduced to a wall of noise is a little hard to take when one of the people playing them was responsible for some of them.

St. Vincent was brilliant last Wednesday. Her new choreography, fearless take on her songbook, and overall presence as Grand Intergalactic Empress of All Things left me awestruck. There was a moment mid-riff when she shot a fiery glance in my general direction. I honestly thought I would burst into flames. David Byrne was also at the show being a cool guy.
To continue the discussion on earplugs, I regret forgetting mine for this show, even if the band wasn't overwhelmingly loud. I should just stuff a pair in every jacket I own so I'm never without them.
So, so good. Now I wait for Swans in May.
