Hi. I’m Drunkneildiamond. Go to hell.
That pretty much sums up my mood today (stressed out and not feeling terribly well physically), but then I watched “The Invitation” again and it cheered me right up! We get to see the “interesting idiots” that Daria mentioned last week, as this episode delved into the social life of the school. We see Kevin and Britney again, but we also see the fashion club! Joey, Jamie, and Jeffy! Upchuck! Mac and Jodie! And Trent!
“The Invitation” explores Daria’s relationships with her classmates (and Trent, but I’ll get to that in a bit). Daria assists Britney with an art assignment and Britney “repays” Daria by inviting her to a party. Britney isn’t the brightest crayon in the box…but she’s not unkind and while she’s definitely not doing Daria a favor in extending the invitation, her heart is (more or less) in the right place. Daria and Britney genuinely connect for a fleeting moment when Daria also hates it when the pudding has skin and Daria responds, “I know what you mean and that scares me.” As much as Daria wants to hold herself above the rest of her peers, that isn’t always the case. Common ground is there, and Daria could find it…if she chose to do so.
With some parental strong-arming Daria goes to the party and enlists Jane as company, and Trent enters the picture. As much as she is loath to admit it, Daria is a teenage girl and her crush on Trent happens fast, getting shy around him, and not engaging in her usual banter with Jane. At least in part, the party is a catalyst to show the further differences in Jane and Daria. Where Daria is shy, Jane isn’t. Jane was much more interested in the two guys at the party, while Daria was mildly disapproving of the whole business, telling them, in a voice thick with sarcasm, that they were “waiting here for you. We were born in this room, we grew up in this room, and thought we would die here…alone. But now you’ve arrived and our lives can truly begin.” As lame as the pick up line was, Daria is very much on the defensive, wanting to keep them at length, not wanting to consider that there might be more underneath the surface.
The party is crashed and the scene of Jane and Daria reminds me a bit of “Beavis and Butt-Head.” As serious as Daria can be, it’s wonderfully amusing to see her be obnoxious. And then Upchuck comes along to be the most obnoxious person of them all, saying “Straight ahead, the future!”
Notes
• I have a ridiculous soft spot for dear Upchuck. The way he says “don’t lean on the buttons!” makes me giggle way too much.
