Since more Star Wars is around the corner, now feels like the time to talk about all the (non-canonical) Extended Universe stuff. This Christmas, I'm thinking about giving my younger brothers one of the Star Wars graphic novels. I have the Thrawn Trilogy in my Amazon cart, but I can't yet bring myself to buy it. Is there a collection that would be more suited to people that have never read the comics before? Also, what's your favorite EU story? [EDIT] I'm stupid, and I didn't see the Comics sub-board - I mean, technically these are books ... but only if you are technically the kind of guy that thinks that comics can be books.

The Thrawn Trilogy is pretty decent gateway to the EU in general. I read the books rather than the graphic novels, but since they're basically Episode VII you really can't go wrong. It's Luke and Leia and Han and stuff so if you've only seen the movies you can read it and not have to constantly look up random dudes backstories on the internet.
I've honestly read a lot more of the novels than the comics, but of the comics I have read I liked In The Shadow of Yavin (Princess Leia as the leader of some black-ops Rebel team) and Shadows of the Empire (based on the hit Nintendo 64 game!). Both of those like The Thrawn Trilogy are pretty accessible as they're set during the original trilogy.

I've not read any Star Wars comics honestly, but I know second-hand Dark Horse's Star Wars: Legacy series was pretty popular (and Marvel is soon to introduce their own Star Wars comics, which - as these will be canon - may be of more interest to your brothers.) And of course comics can be books - that's why the comics board is a subforum of the books board! Moved.

Thrawn Trilogy and Shadows of the Empire are essential! Dark Empire is also great, and features the original cast as well. Excellent stylized art. For those willing to go deeper, the X-Wing: Rogue Squadron series centers around Wedge Antilles and his ragtag band of pilots, and is consistently good. I'm also a big fan of Dark Forces, which is a novel as well as radioplay centering around a faux-Luke Skywalker stand-in Kyle Katarn who discovers his Force-sensitivity while training in the Imperial Academy.

Deeper cuts include Tales of the Jedi: Golden Age of the Sith and the Sith War, which take place thousands of years in the EU's past. Lots of good stuff in there too.
