"--Iβd been talking to Lee Pace, actually, about playing the role of the Red Dragon, because Lee and I go way back, and he was very interested in doing so, so I was always thinking Lee was going to do it, and I was poking pins in the βHalt and Catch Fireβ voodoo doll hoping that he would be available, but that show came back β which Iβm very happy ultimately that it did for everyone involved in it β but I was also shaking my fist at the same time because I wanted to work with Lee again on the show--" DAMMIT WE WERE SO CLOSE. WE WERE SO FUCKING CLOSE.

Just finished the season premiere. Amazed that something this dependent on visual storytelling and subtext is somehow on network TV, all over again; this is Hannibal at its most meditative and uncompromising and sensuous and even nonlinear. And wholly without Will Graham. This is a Hannibal where the serial killer is star in a way he's not been; a bold yet effective start for the season.

songstarliner On that note I am surprised that I was able to watch the episode apparently head of the US. The series actually premieres here this Wednesday; but - as they often do - they put the first episode up OnDemand at midnight; which was a couple of hours ago. As soon as I saw it up there I had to watch it; once I finished it had disappeared - probably they realized it was a mistake to have it up before the U.S. did. Ah well.

'Observe or participate?'
I'm ineffably happy this show has return. What a fantastic series opener.

I'm on record as not feeling terribly enthusiastic about season 2, but holy shit, that was an excellent premiere. If the rest of season 3 is this good, I'm back in.

Also it turns out the numbers for the premiere... sucked.
"The third-season debut of βHannibalβ (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET)"
Read: REALLY SUCKED.
Hopefully it'll improve now that it won't have to compete with basketball games.

Hopefully the summer schedule will be a comfortable fit than the Friday night grave yard in the winter months.

Gorgeous. Utterly gorgeous. A point I've not seen mentioned about the final shot of the episode... It is clearly meant to be the Three of Swords from the Tarot, but with a human torso substituting for the traditional pierced heart. The meaning is usually pain, suffering, loss and separation. If this is Hannibal's farewell note to Bedelia, it's apt.

I have seen some terrible last names, but that is right up there in the top three. I hope it's her married name, else high school was probably a nightmare.

Had a bit of a geek-out at the locations they used. Sure, the Duomo, gotta have the Duomo. The gourmet shop Bedelia visited was off the Piazza della Repubblica (the square with the carousel). I've stayed at a not-great hotel there which had a breakfast room in the arch over the entryway (really the entire selling point of the place). And the last time I was in Florence, I swear the apartment we rented for the week was like a block away from the one they used, overlooking Santa Maria Novella.

I WAS JUST AT THE CAPPELLA PALATINA LAST MONTH (they called it the Norman Chapel a couple times, but Pazzi called it by the correct name later in the episode). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cappella_Palatinathere is no skull on the floor (iirc). I would have been standing on it while taking photos. you'd think I'd notice a thing like that. That is a long-ass drive that Hannibal did transporting the body. At least 12 hours.

I was wondering if the skull was really there. So thanks for that. And oh my god. (spoilers, yo.) Like, the whole time I was thinking "Abigail couldn't really have survived, could she? Really?" But I was going with it and then ... nope. But Bryan Fuller (who likes to troll fans a bit on twitter) said the priest saw her too. HMMMM.

My God, Bryan Fuller's twitter would be amazing if he didn't use all-caps like a nincompoop. I have no idea what it means with the priest, but I'm going to go back and rewatch that part right now to see what he's talking about.

Always been more about Will than Hannibal, so this one hit me hard. Especially with him & Abigail debating the many-worlds model and her resigned position that Hannibal gets what he wants in all possible worlds. Awful thing to hear, terrible for Will even in that particular context.
Also; the bit with Will riffing off the classic Red Dragon line about the church roof collapse was fried gold.

"...Netflixβs early release of Orange Is the New Black certainly didnβt help NBCβs Hannibal at 10 p.m. Thursday (neither did Game 4 of the NBA finals). It sank to a series low 0.5 rating and 1.74 million viewers."
FUCK. SHIT.
I hope the ratings pick up. Fuller's teasing a really "radical" season 4 of the show.

The only thing so far I had to turn away from was the guy tearing himself out of the eyeball mosaic. And the *sound* of that ..... shudders, oh god the ripping. This show is very very good at creating the feeling of simultaneous dread and attraction. It's beautiful.

I couldn't watch the flashback to the kitchen where Abigail got her throat slit. Once was enough.

This show is very very good at creating the feeling of simultaneous dread and attraction. It's beautiful. Yeah, the tearing sounds of the mosaic guy were excruciating to hear. But I agree with Carade, the most disturbing image for me was Mason Verger cutting his own face. It repulsed me so much I actually felt physically sick. I've grown more and more accustomed with the goriness as the seasons went by, though. So while in the first season I couldn't even drink anything, now I ate during the Gideon flashback, thinking ''wouldn't the painkillers spoil the meat?''. Someone pointed to me Gideon was hooked to an IV. The latest episode sparked some great comments over on the AVC. Apparently NBC blurred some Botticelli nudes. That's just too deliciously funny.
